How do I get it to work? I've never made music before.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like bittorrent. You have to share it with me or else it won't work!

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

heh

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

okay then.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I honestly don't know, since I don't have the program. Sorry.

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

CUTTY KNOWS

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

He does! He told me that he had it.

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

adam:

i'd have to suggest buying the software so you can read the manual, hax0r.

no, but really. reason is made up of sequencers and synths that are kind of crappy and i don't even touch those. the most powerful part is the drum machine. choose the setting so reason starts off empty, instead of loading that retarded stock song every time. then you can build your rack with the equipment you want to use. fuck around with the drum machine first. the pull down menus let you choose a drum (snare, hihat, kick, etc, etc). build a whole kit and then you trigger them by choosing where in the measure you want the hits.

this is all very hard to explain in an ILM post, why don't you come here and sit on my lap, i'll show you how it works.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i think jax0n showed me this and i was like: "why don't you just do this all in analog, it's much easier".

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

GYGAX SELL ME YOUR MOOGERFOOGER OK THANKS BYE

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to buy a keyboard/sampler, too.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

you cannot sample with reason. see: kontakt or mach five

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a microkorg (got mine for $220 on ebay). it's okay, it's way too dance oriented in terms of tonebank.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but it's also a midi controller, so you can use any software synth for some analog emulation goodness

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

what is this "software" you speak of?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

VST plug-ins, audio units, etc. they cannot be used stand-alone, they have to be used in conjunction with a program such as digital performer, pro-tools, cubase, logic, etc. two of my favorites:

the oddity:
http://www.gmediamusic.com/gforce/oddity/oddity.html

or the impOSCAR:

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

you cannot sample with reason. see: kontakt or mach five
-- cutty (holle...), August 9th, 2004.

? yeah you can, you just can't record your own audio with it.

admittedly those other programs are better for in depth sampling though.

you can actually make some good stuff with the synths and samplers in reason though, you just gotta mess around a bit.

the drum machine's what really pwns though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer, reason is seriously crippled in the sampling and synthesizer arena.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Healthy debate, that's what ILX was made for.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

DUDE I DONTY EVNE KNOWW WHWAY TRHR FUCK RREASSON ISSSSSS

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, it totally has two different samplers, although I don't really like them. I also don't really understand the appeal of reason's drum sequencer - they way it's set out just makes it hard to see your whole pattern. I'm of the FruityLoops school of pattern editing.

The synths in Reason can kick ass if you feel like fiddling with them a bit.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i like sequencing my drums manually in DP, using the drum editor. that way you have complete control. reason is limited in many ways. and when i said it doesn't have a sampler, i mean, you can't record in sounds and tweak them in the ways you could do with soft-samplers. it's pretty bush league.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

he wasn't debating me as much as agreeing with me and discounting my opinions at the same time.
-- cutty (holle...), August 11th, 2004.

well I meant that the samplers in reason may not be as good as the more dedicated sampling software programs like kontakt but they work if your using them in a limited way for your own thing.

the synths in reason i like just fine, but i also use reaktor for carzier sounding shit.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

crazier i mean, though maybe carzier means something in some arcane tongue.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, it works for me with what i do and that's all i'm saying.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The samplers in Reason work well for cutting up stuff in ReCycle and doing drum edits on the spot.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 12 August 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna get Logic Pro first & then maybe I'll get Reason just for teh drums.

Other programs I'm interested in (if anyone's got these tell me what you think of 'em):
Ableton Live
Pro Tools LE(w/mbox)
Reaktor
Max/MSP
...tell me about any other good ones. I'd like to become fluent with as many music apps as possible.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK LOGIC! DIGITAL PERFORMER!

Weird. I was thinking the other day about getting that MicroKorg.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Saturday, 20 November 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't afford it anymore.

adam... (nordicskilla), Saturday, 20 November 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There must be cheaper ways to make EUROPEAN DANCE MUSIC.

adam... (nordicskilla), Saturday, 20 November 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

EDM!

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 20 November 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

NO! I AM SO SAD. I JUST TRIED TO OPEN REASON AND IT'S ASKING ME TO INSERT A CD THAT I DON'T HAVE ANYMORE!!

adam, did you ever get copies of it?

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 22 November 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

kinda...yeah

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 November 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am looking very hard at Logic Express 7. Would it be worthwhile? I want to record vocals without using a mic. The Garageband thread on ILM made me annoyed with myself again for not recording jack shit in years.

TOMBOT 64 (TOMBOT 64), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

without using an EXTERNAL mic e.g. having to get an adapter box and all that shit when there's already one in my laptop

TOMBOT 64 (TOMBOT 64), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

noise gate and compression are my best friends

TOMBOT 64 (TOMBOT 64), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you going to make EX-MILITARY ANGRYMAN DANCE MUSIC?

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Write a song for Ally and then play it at teh wedding! I went to a wedding recently where the guy did that...very classy.

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i played the bass at my sister's bat mitzvah. i was 10!

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"classy..."

TOMBOT 64 (TOMBOT 64), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)
