SIGHTINGS (load records, http://loadrecords.com/bands/sightings.html)MONOTRACT (ecstatic peace! records, http://www.monotract.com/)METALUX (load records/5rc records, http://www.metalux.org/)
at the WATER TAXI BEACH in Long Island City, QueensFriday, August 12 at 8 PM sharp!
SIGHTINGS are probably the heaviest electrified trio in new york right now, seriously love these dudes and their most recent record - "ARRIVED IN GOLD" on load records - is a classic. they sound like THOMAS BRINKMANN fronting SUICIDE or something additionally ridiculous.
MONOTRACT are a fantastic trio originally from miami, florida featuring CARLOS GIFFONI (aka the man behind NO FUN FEST), and have released stuff on public eyesore and thurston moore's ecstatic peace! (due this fall). they sorta started in a very HARRY PUSSY-heavy guitar attack vibe, but then started playing laptops and other nonsense, and now it's just a big mix of everything. fun times.
METALUX are the duo of j. graf and mv carbon, two amazing ladies formerly known from their work in the SCISSOR GIRLS and BRIDE OF NO-NO (two amazing defunct chicago no wave bands). they've released stuff on load and 5rc and all over the place, and play one helluva mighty throb.
as for the venue, you may have read about the WATER TAXI BEACH in last weekend's New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/31/nyregion/thecity/31beac.html?
"Visitors lie in the sun, sip $2 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, and wolf down hot dogs and burgers prepared by Harry Hawk, the man behind Schnack restaurant on Union Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn."(also is the dude behind gowanus yacht club, too)
timed perfectly for apres-work shenanigans!

#00, the Gig was booked for 8pm - 11pm (ish) and didn't start until about 9pm. We were very excited to have some bands playing and added a new dedicated electrical circuit (20 AMP GFI) specifically for this event.
#0, our $2 24 oz PBRs are our happy hour special and generally run out by 7-8pm, some times earlier and some times later. If you’re coming to the beach just for the PBR it's best to come early. Each day we sell 10 cases while supplies last.
#1, only the organizers collected door money. It was totally voluntary and “the beach” didn’t see any of it. That is to say no one had to pay to enter.
#2, the organizers approached us and said they had some rock bands that would play for free if they (the organizers ) could take donations at the door.
#3 we explained at great length that our customer base included a very wide selection of people and ages and that the music needed to be appropriate for that wide group. They assured us it would; our new policy is to hear demos before we let anyone play.
#4 When the first band played, which I personally enjoyed, many of our regulars left and we let the organizers know that they had to switch bands immediately or we would pull the plug.
#5 They didn’t and we did.
#6 It did rain through-out the night and that also delayed the band(s) including a delay during the 1st set. (see below)
#7 After some, often heated discussion (following the plug pulling) we agreed the bands could go back on at 10:50 and we restored power; due to some Ground Faults (GFI) and / or wet equipment the organizers we not able to keep the power flowing.
#8 We spent 30-40 minutes and allocated 2-3 staff members to correct the problem but with the wet ground or other problems the power was only intermittent.
#9 It is my personal belief that had the organizers of the event/gig been more up front and very clear about the type and nature of music being played, it would NOT have been booked for 8pm on Friday night (basically our FAMILY hour(s), and that we would have booked it for 11 or 12pm and that it would have proceed without interference (at least from us, if not Mother Nature).

you told us not to start until 9.
the pbr, as well as many of your other drink and food items, were sold out before 8:45. you seemingly have no idea how to run a bar, as your "waitresses" were observed ripping people off. it's one thing to provide lousy service (which you yourself are quite adept at, harry: i stood waiting to buy some beer for 10 minutes, and when you finally were around to take an order - because your "waitresses" were too busy, you took the order of the guy standing BEHIND ME), it's another TO NOT GIVE PATRONS THEIR CHANGE BACK. especially when one waitress tells another to "put it in the tip jar." i told you about this situation and you just shrugged.
that is true. thankfully, all the bands were paid even though only one of them got to play.
i have no idea what todd p said to you about the show. i brought the show to him, and he suggested the watertaxibeach, so it's a little disingenous to use "organizers" in the plural when you only talked with one person.
if you did actually say this to todd p (which i doubt since you do not seem to be very honest otherwise), he never conveyed to anyone else. if your policy was to hear demos first, then i have no idea why you never contacted him to hear demos before the show.
many of your regulars, and their children (including a young boy who identified himself as your son) stayed. the bar was still very full with regulars and the 150+ people that came out for the show.
because it's apparently not enough for you to have 150+ people enjoying a show as long as a few people leave.
if we let the bands play, outside, while it rains, then we would all be liable for any injury that might occur if, say, THE WATER ELECTROCUTED SOMEONE. would you really want to be held responsible if someone died? think about that for a minute.
no, the "organizers" had nothing to do with not being able to keep the power flowing. YOU WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING AND MAINTAINING POWER. you did not know how to do that. your third-world set-up (complete with dude sneaking through a fence to look at extension cords) is not what any reasonable person would expect.
"or other problems" like that nobody present who actually RUNS (of course that being a relative term) your bar had any idea how to get things going again (which, of course, wouldn't have been an issue had you not pulled the plug in the first place).
again, i have no idea what todd p told you, and i have no reason to believe that he would've been anything other than upfront with you since i have NEVER had a problem working with him, and he is nothing but honest in my experience. i was told, by todd, that the music had to be over by 12 because that's when the bar closed. had you said ANYTHING about moving the show later to avoid any conflict with your "family crowd" (which is crazy since a fair number of children gathered around to hear metalux, the most abstract of the three bands, play), i don't think we would've had a problem doing that. but we can't do what was never presented as an option, and it's unfair for you to say these things, what, a week after the fact?
anyway, this is enough for now, but harry, face it, YOU blew it, not us. your place is quite honestly the worst-run bar i've ever been to in new york (and that's saying A LOT). fire your "staff," get some people who actually know how to cook and wait on customers. and figure out what ACTUALLY is on your property. and please, for the love of god, never book a show again.

I didn't mention Todd since I didn't want to single him out and since his Intern was also present at the 1st meeting.
Perhaps you'd like to call me to discuss since you very much seem like a reasonable person, but since you bring up Todd...
My understanding is although Todd promised us that he would be attending he left for Mexico (which he told us he was) but that he didn't return from Mexico as promised.
Todd was the one who wanted to start by 8 and end by 11 and we NEVER told him that we had to close by 12 (we promise we will stay OPEN til 12... and we offered for the show to go later)...
We were upset that you didn't start at 8pm as promised at the time still assuming it was a rock show, ... we never said to start at 9.
We only authorized a $4 donation not a $6 so we feel every who paid $6 should get $2 back. In fact at the 1st meeting we told Todd NO donations at the door, only the 'passing of a hat' but with further communications with the Intern we authorized the $4 donation policy.
As for the Electrical, we made it clear that the Bands would need to bring LONG 300 ft of Extension cords. We made that clear to Todd and his Intern and when their wasn't enough cords brought we provided one of our own. So while you can call it "third world set up" and thats very creative and descriptive, it's what we had agreed to provide; it was wasn't suitable Todd or his staff, experts in this sort of thing, should have declined the venue.
Again our New policy is to get demos; thats' the policy put into place after someone(s) mis-represented the music they would be playing.
You noted that 150 people stayed, We counted 150-200 people WHO LEFT.
Your audidence should been told about our PBR policy and if the event was promoted around the available of cheap PBR that was clearly beyond our control.
> #3 we explained at great length that our customer base included a > very wide selection of people and ages and that the music needed > to be appropriate for that wide group. They assured us it would; > our new policy is to hear demos before we let anyone play.

We really did tell him and now looking back he was rather evasive about the type of music only calling it idie rock and NEVER using the term Noise or any thing else that would have been descriptive about the music. [Having only heard the first band, not knowing what else might be in store...]
My personal tastes running to the late 80's and early 90's of Industrial, Ambient, Atonal, Ambient Trance. Including anything from that time on Extreme Records, Silent Records (or anything in the Silent Records catalog); while that isn't what was played at the beach, I think (although your welcome to disagree) I have enough background to understand what was going to be played had Todd and his Intern used any terms descriptive of the music.

I promised nothing - and this matters because? what difference does it make if I'm at the show when there are very capable folk present to run it. There was a good chance I would have been back but it didn't work out that way - sorry to extend my vacation, dude. The capable hands of Joel Hunt (booker and runner of many events) Carlos Giffoni (organiser of the No Fun Fest) and Alex Escamilla (my intern and an organiser and runner and sound person of many shows at Weslyan University) meant that the problems this show had were not for lack of talented organisers (on our side anyway.)
this is simply a lie. you said that you close at midnight. you also expressed concern about late night noise and the threat of the event being shut down if it went too late. I had to send a special notice - at your request - asking the bands to stop playing without argument if we got any noise complaints from the neighbors. Going late was never an option.
you can't simultaneously want the show to be both early and late, even in retrospect. I called Joel and Alex at 8:30 - FROM MEXICO - and asked then to get the show on the road.
how do you authorize a donation amount? no one had to pay anything - it was a donation, by definition optional. We told you it would be in the $4 dollar range, maybe higher, maybe lower. It's a suggested amount. And anyway, I - not my intern Alex - called you from Mexico, four days before the event, and said that passing a hat wasn't going to cut it. You said you had no problem with asking as people enterred, as long as it was was done gently.
in this instance Harry is right - except that he is fibbing on the details. I told him we would bring three 100 ft extention cords, which we did, and he said that would suffice. In his defense, I should add the power problems had to do with the rain, not the setup.
this is where you gloss over the details. I misrepresented nothing. The kind of music I involve myself with is widely known. Before I ever sat down with you, Harry, I recommended to both you and to Alec at the NY Water Taxi company (the actual owners of "your" bar) that you should visit my website and read my press, look at my schedule. I told you that this would be loud music and that, while it was not heavy metal (and it isn't) that it is avante. From the reception that I recieved from you and your business partner ("Does it more like Metallica or Pearl Jam?") I felt that more specific descriptions would be futile. I focused on what sorts of people we'd bring in. I mentioned Williamsburg, the LIC artist community, the Lower East Side. All synonyms for ARTY SHIT.
You gave me the option of starting before 8pm and I told you - flat out - that I thought your early crowd wouldn't enjoy the music. You volunteered that after 8pm the children tend to leave and a more sophisticated adult crowd settles in. Again, I made it very clear that our crowd would be a Williamsburg / East Village artist crowd and you seemed excited at the prospect. What part of that is disingenuous on my part? - aside from the immaterial fact that there's no accounting for your crowd's bad taste.
and I'd like to note that it was RAINING. How many folks do you usually have at an OUTSIDE bar when they're being rained on?
the PBR blurb that I advertised came directly off of your website. Here, I'll paste the exact quote from www.watertaxibeach.com :
$2 24oz PBR
there's no mention of limited availability or happy hour. And it's still up - false advertising!
> #3 we explained at great length that our customer base included a > very wide selection of people and ages and that the music needed> to be appropriate for that wide group. They assured us it would;> our new policy is to hear demos before we let anyone play.

you were hardly concerned with the genre - all you spoke to me about was demographics and that you don't like heavy metal. You did not tell me that what we did needed to appeal to everyone in your usual crowd - you've just made that up. There's nothing that appeals to everyone.
indie rock is in the eye of the beholder, and there's no accounting for taste, my friend. I said independent rock and said avante. What did you expect, Pavement? It's 2005. Again - I told you repeatedly to check out my website and read about what I do. The bands on this bill were listed on the date on my website before we ever approached you. You didn't do even the most basic research.
Firstly - if that's your background then you should've totally understood where this music was coming from. But regardless, I had no reason to expect that you had any knowledge of obscure music genres and you didn't inquire. And for the record, these are bands that have played far more prominent (as well as even more staid) venues than the Beach, and they have never had the plug pulled on them.
I have put on hundreds of shows and I have never had the plug pulled on one of my shows. That's totally honky tonk asshole shit. You fucked up, and you should just admit it. I fully believe that you have a more underground artistic background - but business has made you a close minded dude and your eye was squarely (though ineffectively) focused on your bottom line. Sorry we didn't appeal to the fat Log Island guidos who seem to be your target market. Pulling the plug is a fucked up move, period.
