hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

hmm

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

so you're saying that you will NOT be *CURATING* the book project?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

britishes?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

i was just thinking this.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

well it's a funny joke thread tim, but fuck it, i will never get published, ever. nobody wants to (or does) read anything i write, or give a shit in general. my so-called rock crit friends won't even, most of the time, return my emails when i pitch them something. maybe they're too busy giving work to all their regular assholes who can't write and who have crap taste (OMG M.I.A. IS SO AWESOME I WANNA GET IN HER PANTS BLAH BLAH). and my "regular" non-rock friends aren't any help in getting jobs, either. i'm tired of having to worry from minute to minute how i'm gonna pay rent, or eat, or whatever. i'm tired of booking shows so HARDLY ANY of my friends show up, taking effort to do something fucking INTERESTING and DIY in this shitty fucking corporate-backrub town where nobody gives a shit about ANYTHING unless there's a publicist involved (no offense against publicists per se but wtf happened to figuring things out ON YOUR FUCKING OWN without having a blog or a magazine or some asshole TELL YOU?). i mean jon williams is gonna go to my show tonight, he's been to 2 which is TWO FUCKING MORE THAN MOST OF MY SO-CALLED FRIENDS IN THIS TOWN and he doesn't even live here yet! fuck i'm just so fucking sick of busting my ass for NOTHING. NO MONEY, NOTHING. fuck even the fucking interns at this record label will be able to get good jobs in six months or whatever, i can't even get hired at a record store.

britishes is fine, mark. she's probably the only bright spot right now.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

we love you though and we know that you are ahead of the curve and that's certainly not always the easiest place to be.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

i'm so far ahead of you i'm behind you, i think.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

well y'know it sounds like it's going to be a great show tonight at least

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

didn't you already start a thread called fuck it?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

everyone on ilm's going to see smog or jennifer cardini or wiley (WHY?!!?!?! nobody buys his fucking record, why would they wanna see him live?) instead.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

that wiley record suuuucks

gear (gear), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm just sick of ilm sameness and the promotion of the shadow canon

gear (gear), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm just as sick of it too, but nobody's letting me into the fraternity either.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

i like the wiley record.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

you might be the only two people who bought the damn thing and didn't return it.

not in the mood for funny, dean.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

funny doesn't pay my rent

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

ive realized a long time ago that you cant really depend on your friends to help you professionally unless you're a coppola or a scientologist.

huell howser (chaki), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

funny doesn't pay my rent either but it gets you further than sadness

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

depending on friends doesn't work but i sure as shit can't depend on strangers.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

hating certain aspects of ilm doesn't mean i hate ilm. i love ilm and reading threads about M.I.A. causing terrorist attacks

gear (gear), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

depending on strangers pays the rent!

huell howser (chaki), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Or in the cases of those of us not quite as successful as Teh Chak, at least pays for the weedsacks!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

gear (gear), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't. i haven't had a single job interview due to a resume i sent out to a complete stranger since sometime in 2003, i think.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

THANKS GEAR.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

ive realized a long time ago that you cant really depend on your friends to help you professionally unless you're a coppola or a scientologist.

Or a Mason.

pr00de: as it clung to her thigh I started to cry (pr00de), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

there are more variables there obv

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

oh gear, stop sulking already!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

why don't you tell me what they are, dean, since you know me so well?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

: )

gear (gear), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

other variables:

- the presentation of your resume
- how relevant your resume is to the job you're applying for
- the timing of the delivery of the resume
- whether or not the position is one that will actually be filled by those who have submitted a resume (i.e. - the job listing is just a formality)
- your attitude

there are others but i am full of hamburger.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

jennifer cardini!! :D

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

hahaha.. fe zaffe, back away slowly...

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't she in FRAEKS AND GAEKS?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I SPINNA DA REKORDS!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

1. the presentation of your resume

i have asked people for their input re: the presentation and everyone says it's fine.

2. how relevant your resume is to the job you're applying for

i don't apply to jobs i don't think i can get or reasonably do.

3. the timing of the delivery of the resume

generally if it's an email, timing probably doesn't matter. i don't fax resumes at midnight. not really sure what you mean by timing anyway, since responding to a job listing usually requires me to send in a resume in a timely fashion ie. i'm not applying to month-old job listings, for example.

4, whether or not the position is one that will actually be filled by those who have submitted a resume (i.e. - the job listing is just a formality)

that may be true but there's no way for me, the job-seeker, to know.

5. your attitude

i don't tend to write cover letters exuding anything other than enthusiasm and interest in the job, so i wonder how this is even applicable. by the time my attitude may be "questionable" about a job listing it's by that point been so long since i applied to it i won't hear anything anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

you don't like jumping through hoops

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

i doubt even monkeys do.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

you have to do it to get jobs

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

not exactly, caitlin. not even sure how you'd know since you're still in college. no offense or nothing, but you don't exactly know what it's like.

i'll give you an example of my luck. friend i run into at a bbq this past sunday emails me a job listing he got from a friend this week. this job is pretty related to two of the past three corporate jobs i've done (and similar to the third) over the past five years. but friend of mine doesn't list the email address or the company of the friend who sent it to him, so i have no idea how to even apply for it. i've emailed my friend all week and he has YET to send this information (tho he did respond already, oblivious to my request for the information).

that is of course better than the friend who, when i emailed him about a job where he works, didn't even bother to respond in any way. why i even bothered talking to him and treating him nicely when i ran into him on the subway, i have no idea.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

fine

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

"my luck" seems like bad luck only if you view these jobs as ones you're likely to get or if you view these friends are being obligated to find you work.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

again, dean, i wouldn't apply to them if i didn't think i was well suited for them. and i would do anything for my friends, that they won't do the same is disheartening, obviously.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

being well suited for a job != you are likely to get this job

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

caitlin if you had concrete examples of what these "hoops" might be then i might take your comment as something other than just another cliche that i often hear on this subject. i don't mean to be dismissive, i'm sure you do have something to contribute, but every time i hear the same-ol' same-ol' it makes me completely turn off. and yes, i do think age has something to do with it as well. you have not been in the workforce, and i don't mean that as an insult, just a fact.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

being well suited for a job != you are likely to get this job

clearly that's true, but that doesn't explain how i'm actually supposed to get a job. which would obviously be more valuable to me anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

5. your attitude

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

jorel you can join me at of montreal show in two weeks
-- Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr_...), August 12th, 2005. (admin) (userip)

HE WAS SERIOUS DUDE! FUCKING GO! FORGET "TWEEPOP." THEY'VE TRANSCENDED FUCKING "TWEEPOP." UNBELIEVABLY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

i have been in the workforce. i'm not 12 years old.
ok that thread you started about that recruiter calling you to tell you what to say and what not to say in the interviews. you got mad when he said not to mention music at all. he was helping you out because he knew what the employer was looking for. even if the guy was a total jerk and you hated him you could easily just take his advice if you really wanted a job.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

i am serious. i will probably be there. and they will perform skits but they will not be funny. there will be no funny.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

dean again my attitude as conveyed in communicating my interest/enthusiasm in a position is the only attitude that is conveyed to the potential employer. so i'm at a loss as to how my attitude, otherwise, would affect me not getting a job.

caitlin, it is true that i'm not interested in lying to get a job. i'm not sure why an employer would seek out a employee who lies.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

you're right, jorel. good luck. i'll be on other threads if you need me.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

thanks for all your help, dean.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

well lying in this case would be the jumping through hoops i was talking about. it's not like you're lying about never having raped anyone or something

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

DEAN THEY DIDN'T DO SKITS ON THE LAST LEG OF THIS TOUR. A COUPLE OF RAD OUTFIT CHANGES FOR KEVIN, HOWEVER.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

i think lying about a dying parent, while not on the order of lying about rape, sure, is still a pretty big lie and not one which is easy to get out of.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

i was talking about the music thing

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

that's how he suggested i lie about going on tour, caitlin.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Hstencil, out of curiosity, have you considered moving to another city? It seems like NYC is only bringing you frustration these days.

I'm sorry to see that you're having such a hard time.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

haha ok!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

whaaxpost

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

moving before i'm ready or want to (and where to?) leave new york would really suck, probably even more than being here already does.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

That's definitely true. I was mostly responding to your frustrations with the culture of the city and your difficulties with promoting your shows - I would imagine there's got to be a better place for you some where, though I have no suggestions off the top of my head. Chicago? I don't know. Anyway, I hope your luck changes soon.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

actually the last show i did was well attended. i just get really nervous about this stuff. i don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, per se, since it was nice that "time out" did list it, but it's not paying my rent, either. even with a really good turnout tonight i'll be lucky to get a couple days groceries out of it.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

general comment re. this thread:

frustration at trying to find one's way within the political/economic structure of our civilization = often totally fricking valid

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

jobness is a pain in the ass. it can be really easy to get in funk over it. i think that's universal because so many of us really want the small brass ring set of jobs... naturally a lot of us are grinding out on the outskirts of the goods.

i've really went through a hell of a lot of depression and angst about the whole thing. i've busted my ass, and for what?

the flipside is that you're a really talented dude. i think anybody that's known you for a while knows that. why they're passing is a mystery... surely the kind of mysterious force that's common in the marketplace. it's their loss though. it really is.
m.

msp (mspa), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

fuck man i wld totally go to yr shows if they were in london - sightings, dbl leopards, skaters, i mean new yorkers are fucken SPOILT

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

sorry that was fuck all help i know but trust me = indifference to gd music and enthusiasms - not specific to ny, london, paris, munich etc

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

it's the truth. a dude could do awfully here in nashville too. i'd love to open a club but i know it would tank... or i'd never make a dime. i'd have to do computerz just to keep the rent paid. etc etc.

NOBODY goes to shows here cause everybody's in a band or whatever. it's awful. music city my ass.

still makes me wish i could start some kind of co-op space.
m.

msp (mspa), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

i have these two friends, a wealthy married couple, that always ask me "why don't you open a good bar where you have bands and stuff?" if only it was that easy. i have no money and lousy credit.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

m.

msp (mspa), Friday, 12 August 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

i like writing for the prl. not convinced anybody reads it because it seems like i get absolutely no feedback these days.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 12 August 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

well dude i work freelance as well and i'm going through a similar problem, in that not only are the jobs fewer and fewer as i move up slightly, but the positions are being eliminated quite possibly due to union action is backfiring. and i email people i've worked with and ask about work, people i'm friendly with, but unfortunately many people i'm in contact with are also freelancers and therefore are looking out for #1. i always feel lucky when i do get a call. i'm considering getting out of my career sooner rather than later (as planned) and taking a steady office job, even if it does pay half of what i make on the freelance gigs.

gear (gear), Friday, 12 August 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

i know the idea is scary, but have you considered trying to find a partner to do such a thing? (with them basically providing money and better credit)

i know it's easier to suggest that than do it. i would do it in my case if i could feel safe and okay about starting a business with friends... something which would probably doom our friendship.
