xpost - haaaa ive driven by that shit many times

Mormons sometimes say their temples allow them to step "out of the world" for a few hours. Mostly, of course, that means they consider the buildings a refuge from a chaotic, godless society. But the temples do look a little as though they came from "out of the world"—if not from another planet, then at least from some distant or imagined landscape. Non-Mormons tend to feel the same way. After the temple outside Washington was finished in the mid-'70s, somebody climbed onto a Beltway overpass with a can of spray paint and scrawled a message reading, "Surrender Dorothy!"

that's some scary shit from the highway when you're passin' through. especially with the sunset happening behind it. "dudes, i hope we make it back to nashville man. fuckin dark towers ay hoy!"

isn't that like ... a mormon tabernacle or something?

oakland has one in the hills and it's practically this beacon of landmarkeddd light you can see from many places in the east bay. "over here. take a tract."

who was it the other day that said scientology was a front to make mormons and their special underwear seem normal? you can bet tom cruise was in the conversation.

"I hear people talk about our temple as though we were Disneyland or something like that," said temple administrator John Laing, who laughed when he heard about the latest case of mistaken identity.
