My attempt at translating Nao Identificado

An Unidentified Object

I'm gonna write a song for her
that after Carnival
will be released as a single
in Brazil.

I'm going to write something
so so so romantic,
so sentimental and
anti-computer.

I'm gonna make this love song
a flying saucer,
a song saying everything to her
that by my passion alone
will launch it past the stars
and shine so bright
it will even be visible
from downtown at night...

As an unidentified object

I think I liberally applied 12 coats of poetic justice/liberty.

I can't believe there's no online translations of CV (that I could find).

That's sweet, Gygax!

Have you ever read Charles Perrone's book Masters of Contemporary Brazilian Song? Chapters on Veloso, Gil, and others. He's a lit guy - teaches at some college in Florida. He does a lot of translations in there.

Thanks Tim! No, I normally don't read music books but I have no problem making an exception for MPB/Brasileino.

hstencil and jack cole recommended one to me a while ago too...

I just bought Quelquer Cosa or whatever it's called. Why do people always rag on his BTLS covers? They rule as far as I'm concerned.

I'm excited about El Record's reissue of Rogerio Duprat's A Banda Tropicalista Do Duprat that's supposed to be out this week.

books:

Christopher Dunn's Brutality Garden and Caetano Veloso's Tropical Truth.

Cornelius J. Brosnan (Grodd), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

also key is Oswaldo de Andrade's Cannibal Manifesto.

I have this in my greasy mitts right now! JC, I swear to god, we will do another swap soon my friend. I need to take care of Jaxxon and Milton and about a bazillion others. Give me another week to get my life together.

oh shit, rob, that Duprat album is top of my list of stuff to get at dusty this weekend.

also, i thought there were gonna be TONS of shit i'd want there and i went through the site and only came up with a few ideas. Have you heard any Babe Ruth besides "The Mexican"? i'm thinking about getting the greatest hits. also thinking about picking up the Novi Singers (polish now sound jazz singers - like funky free design?) and the ESP album by Jerry Moore "Life is A Constant Journey Home".

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 18 August 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, and Jake Holmes "Above Ground Sound"

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 18 August 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I saw that Babe Ruth greatest hits thing when I was there this weekend! I confess I don't know any Babe Ruth outside of "The Mexican". Maybe it's good! a greatest would certainly be an acceptable place to start. I was thinking about it myself. Until I got lured into buying that East of Eden CD! Yikes, that thing is ... scary in its weird mediocrity. Which of course makes it bizarrely attractive. but yeah, they are basically a bad prog band. but they compell me to keep listening in order to figure out WHY they are actually bad. It's a strange situation... I blame skotrok.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 18 August 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

man i hate dusty, reading the reviews of those East of Eden records, they sounds FANTASTICAL
