tehRZA gibbons (tehresa), Sunday, 21 August 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 21 August 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

fe7 (FE7), Sunday, 21 August 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

jon, is the white thing with "use an old idea" an oblique strategies widget?!
yes

what do the cursor, monitor and jog shuttle menubar icons stand for?
Cursor is a gui for turning on/off FingaMidi
Monitor is displays quickprefs.
Jog is a pref launcher for my shuttle.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

my ibook died on friday. the monitor just went blank. i have to decide whether it's worth fixing a two-year-old ibook (i will if it'll cost less than $200) or if i should get a new powerbook (which i had been planning on anyway). AND my fucking external drive (which was hooked up to an entirely different machine) died on friday too. i have a backup of that, but it hadn't been updated in months. all of which is to say i am no longer a mac friend. :(

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

sounds like what happened to me this week, except i started out with a powerbook and moved to an ibook (couldn't afford to go big this time). i like the keyboard on my ibook better anyway. HELLO STUDENT LOANS. thank god i have some coming, or else i'd be up shit creek.

i still like macs. i don't like the local guy that i originally took my powerbook to who didn't do shit and ripped me off for $75 to boot.

in other news, i went to the assjack show saturday. the singer tried to stage dive and hit my face with his face. it was pretty sweet.

you like the ibook keyboard more? i love the pbook keyboard -- it's one of the biggest reasons why i want on! i'm just trying to decide between the 12" and 15".

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Having a 12" has made me unable to type on any other laptop keyboard.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

i love the 12" keybs too.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Mine is 15"

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

PC laptop keyboards are terrible, mostly.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Although, the complaints about the quality of [i|p]book displays are otm.

Jon really, WHY do you listen to the BBC World Service?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

So I can learn that Lady Soverign ("known as 'Sov' to her friends") is a "little hoodlum" who you "wouldn't let into your house".

Actually, I hardly ever use any of the BBC channels... I guess I should delete it. Which BBC radio has the best news?

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

BBCG

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Jams, dying screens are a recurring problem on a few batches of ibooks that came out a couple of years ago. my mate got his repaired for free by apple because it's an aknowledged problem (even tho it was out of waranty and he had no appe care). you just have to pester them a bit.

I don't know!

TS: OS9 third party extension conflicts vs OSX permission repairs

amon (eman), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

I've never had OSX permission problems hang my system at boot....

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

xpost - the answer is osx of xcoursex

it was either that or clearing out every single cache that fixed it. supposedly youre supposed to repair permission before doing upgrades. also i have no idea what i'm talking about half the time with this shit

p.s. - slsk/ssx here i come ;- ))

amon (eman), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

i ran font finagler and cache out x = startup went from 6 min back down to 1 min

amon (eman), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the tip! :D

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

hey jed i know about the logic board replacement thing. my last ibook had to do that FIVE TIMES. my replacement wasn't sposed to have those problems, but i took it to tekserve and that is indeed the problem. i might try to whine my way into making apple fix it. regardless, for some fucking reason i ordered another ibook last night rather than a pbook. it was just hard to justify dropping $3k on something that i really don't need when a $1k computer would suit me fine.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I missed out on all the problematic Macs..... I'm not getting a new mac until after xmas.

Anyone have good advice on a cheapo USB keyboard I can get at OfficeMax or WalMart?
