For reals! These guys were fucking great! It was nice when they incorporated some field recordings of cicadas, because it was in an outdoor amphitheater and it was hard to hear them over the *real* cicadas.

tell us more!

The whole show was pleasantly subdued. Very quite, and in the middle of campus so it attracted lots of curious students. Watersports had lots of fitzing pulses, swells of synth and the quiet tones of that cylindrical xylophone type thing. Their set ended with a bog simulcra, replete with aforementioned cicadas and contact mic'd croaking call and response. Synth mesmerism.

Sax player in Sapat recorded the whole show I believe. Actually I think Irene recorded the show as well, but I'm not sure if it was just band's set. I will see about this for you.

sax player aka steve good? i didn't get his email address when they were in town recently, i should get in touch with that badass.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that's him. Irene only recorded my band's set, so no luck there.

Tinman: Set to Self-Destruct (cprek), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

who is irene? and what is your band? still wanna hear it anyways!

Irene Moon is my gf and I just started playing with the Wrmer Milks. Iovae's set and Sapat's jam were also great, so you would be well served to get in touch with that badass.

I loved Watersports' set! I thought though that they had sampled the cicada clicks/rattles live with a microphone or something. I think the Iovae guy was also kinda playing call-n-response with the cicadas (I loved his set, too). What the fuck with our late-blooming cicada population, anyway? Our bugs be slackers.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

they had a guiro/scraper thingy with a contact mic that they sampled beforehand and played just a wee bit at our set. but i'm pretty sure every set was a little different.

Fun Fact gleaned from folks hanging out after the show: Russ' main point of influence for his sound are the cult records of Golden Voyage.
