Should we all be donating $0.82 to fund cancer research?

Does donating small amounts of money to charitable causes even help? I gave $2.00 to a cancer support group tonight. It seems like large donations from rich folks, corporations, non profit trusts and the government must comprise the vast majority of funding for causes like this.

Lance Armstrong's cancer foundation has sold tens of millions of bracelets for a buck a pop.

(Tsunami Bracelet iPod ad ripoffs, etc.)

But in terms of let's say, cancer research where does the money come from. (Also, are pharm companies able to expand on charitable research to get drug patents?)

Hell yeah. The idea is that Big Pharma is the only place you can go to "market" the drug successfully. So any big-time finding, whether it's backed by private $$, universities, or most notoriously, the NIH, the ball's going to get grabbed by the big kids and taken to another court.

KINDA LIKE TEH RECORD INDUSTRY, EH?

My University aggressively pursues patent litigation against drug companies and makes sick bank doing so. It is nice to think that at least some of the drug money is lining the coffers of a non-profit dedicated to doing multi-disciplinary research, even if I know the Deans and Provosts are lining their pockets almost as well as CEOs.

Also, who are you?

haha

I usually just lurk here

No shit, I didn't know schools did this. I've read a bit about the NIH scams, which is really sad considering we all pay for that research via our tax money, yet we get ass raped by the companies protecting their "investment." Big Pharma spend $20 BILLION on marketing alone last year. I can't get my head around that one.

Large research universities are run like large corporations! Our university spins off tons of startups that the university has a partial stake in. The researchers involved get a stake as well. Everyone wins!

Also, spin-offs are great for co-ops, internships, etc since the people running them are often your professors.

And then the universities funnel the profits back in and pay for everyone's full scholarships and beer money, right? OH WAIT

I think most of the money goes to endowments which goes towards staff salaries and infrastructure improvements. Scholarship cash is usually donated and specially flagged as being used for only that.

scholarship goes to football and basketball, which, if successful, in turn brings in more money from rich boosters.
