Most waterspouts are formed in fair weather by mechanisms similar to that which forms dust devils. More rare are "tornadic" waterspouts which are ordinary tornadoes which have either formed over water or were formed over land and then moved to the water.

Waterspouts are the likely explanation for raining frogs, fish, and sometimes waterbirds. If a waterspout passes an area having large numbers of fish near the surface of the ocean, the fish (or frogs, birds, etc.) are swept up the waterspout. Eventually, the fish fall back to earth, possibly on land or sailors. The sight of fish falling out of a clear sky or after a ferocious storm in a pre-scientific era undoubtedly gave rise to all kinds of myths.

I was also afraid of the beginning of the Wizard of Oz until a very late age.

I have been around 1 tornado in the east. I have been in a bunch of hurricanes; that shit don't scare me.

yeah... i've seen one near tampa on a shitty weather day. pretty scary. i've seen crazy ass dust devils too in zee desert. freaky to be drivin like 85 mph down the highway and have one of those things come toward you. like some tee ball version reality version of twister.
