this band is everywhere on tv and in the mags. wtf? sound like old prog i think.

howell huser (chaki), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Eeew, I just went to their website. WTF kind of prog are you listening to that sounds like that?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Their name sounds like an upscale home furnishing catalog.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

they're terrible.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

well they are the new thing and all the kids are talking about them so yancey is bound to come in here and defend them.

howell huser (chaki), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Do they have a Chapman Stick player?

http://www.nickbeggs.co.uk/graphics/stick_advert.jpg

And an electric violin?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

xpost - robble

i think Sundar likes them. i've never listened to them, but i thought they'd be just screamo crap

Mad SETI (jaxon), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

They're like a poppy hair metal band that read a Mars Volta article saying that prog is back so they incorporated a few vaguely proggy riffs into their sub-Faith No More cheez.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Isn't there some kind of Spanish folk/idm group with this same name?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah i've heard this name in a non-prog context i'm sure. although "poppy hair metal band that read a Mars Volta article saying that prog is back so they incorporated a few vaguely proggy riffs into their sub-Faith No More cheez" sounds good anyway.

The Blunnet Boy Wonder (noodle vague), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

they are unlistenable. they are definitely a generational thing. I'm only 22 but i think i missed the cutoff point. like, all the 18-20 year olds like them but older than that its impossible to get them.

i'm exagerrating, obviously but...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

oh i get them. i just cant understand the sudden popularity/hype thing.

howell huser (chaki), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

worst band ever! i have a friend whose girlfriend dragged him to see them and he describes it as the single worst two hours of his life.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Isn't there some kind of Spanish folk/idm group with this same name?

yeah that's what i thought!! oh wait is that telly & savalas or something?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

They played for two hours?!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

ha ha, Telly & Savalas. I think that was it.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

they were actually ahead of the curve. people made fun of the dude for sounding like geddy lee, but now prog is hip, so they don't make fun of him like they used to. i mean, they've been around awhile. longer than the mars volta anyway.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

There's a couple other threads about them but they're way too negative and intimidating. Anyway, what do you think of "The Suffering"? It's really grown on me. Like the bright 'classique' guitar sound. I don't think I dislike any of the recent crop of mainstream pomp/prog/goth/emo-type bands.

-- Sundar (sundar_subramanian200...), October 8th, 2005 11:40 PM. (sundar)

amon (eman), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

they've been a band for six or seven years. it's just that only now has progcore swept the nation.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

you can read all about it in my new book: It's Official! Progcore Has Swept The Nation!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm all for it, by the way. If only cuz i am ready to blow up every new metalcore band i hear. i'll take lame noodling over lame whining+lame death metal riffs anyday.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

but if you want the good kind ya gotta get that Gospel album on Level Plane. Or the album by You Will Die which is great instrumental power trio hardcore with extra noodles. no vocalist equals big time bonus most of the time.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

xp - but isn't the whining still there, hence: pomp/prog/goth/emo-type

amon (eman), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

most of the new bands need more gentle giant in their equation and less equal vision hardcore meets sunny day real estate though. in other words, just buy the new opeth album.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

gentle giant "three friends" is good, He, he

amon (eman), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

yeah, on the equalvision stuff like coheed and others there is big time whining. i haven't heard C&C in a long time though. their new album is like volume 4 in their projected 6 album fantasy series. i actually prefer power metal when all is said and done. i like my over the top to be way over the top. new demons & wizards album is choice. but i do like the idea of prog-metal/prog-punk and it can be done well. Like on the Gospel album.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

http://www.rockdiscography.com/list/coversai/gentlegiant/gentlegiant_octopus.jpg

amon (eman), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i think it's cool that there are bands willing to stray from the path a little in those genres. bands that obviously are inspired by the tech elements of DEP and Converge and the like, but who want to take things in a spacier, looser direction. But fuck this shit, all noise doodz need that Minsk album. heavy as fuck doom + hawkwind sound efx + the occasional saxophone = smoke a fatty yum!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

power metal ?

http://www.kickedintheface.com/reviews/cover/Pantera%20-%20Power%20Metal.jpg

amon (eman), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

you've never heard of power metal? bombastic euro sword & sorcery sing on top of a mountain with a full choir deafening crescendo arpeggio-laden power metal? you are missing out. go getchyerself a blind guardian album and take some drugs.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Their label sent me their promo THREE TIMES, how fucking disorganized! The name sounds like one of those shea butter lotions $40/tube

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 14 October 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

it's an insult to prog to call this shit prog.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

i think they must be counting the number of promos towards its chart placement

strng hlkngtn: what does it mean? (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

they sent a promo to the m@t@d0rK shipping dept. (aka me and bl@k3)!!!! so weird.

we also got the new ricky martin, y'all.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

i saw ricky on the today show, uh, today

lookin fly as ever

strng hlkngtn: what does it mean? (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

ricky's ballhair waxing must take an hour and cost $399

Who are we to stop him?

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

I bet he even has a "leech resources administrator" to put leeches on his dick, because any obvious veins would project a "too macho image".

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 14 October 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

And if Jade Tree had mad dollars you know they'd do the same for the same reasons.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 14 October 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey, we should start a fake emo/twee label that has on its demo/submissions page a statement warning all hopefuls that if signed they will have to have all body hair and any inappropriately large muscles removed!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 14 October 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

Then on the sneak we rename all the bands Harry Dickmuscle I, Harry Dickmuscle II, etc, and get them played only on nu-metal radio shows!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 14 October 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Scott likes ABBA-metal. He sent me a tape of the stuff. It was half ABBA-metal and half fogeys who "still got it!" And Katatonia.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 14 October 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Scene One

jason goes to the coheed site

wife: "honey, you might have to stop this soon. it's really bad. please stop"

Mad SETI (jaxon), Friday, 14 October 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

eww, listening on the site now. sounds like a christian band doing a mash-up of metallica's 'ride the lightning' at first, then gets 10x more shitty as keyboards enter. also, is that the album title? atrocious

amon (eman), Friday, 14 October 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

This shit was on my PSP sampler disk. UGFH

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Friday, 14 October 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

2005 ROFLING METAL THREAD, YOU ARE MY EVEREST (ddb), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I read about these in some shit uk indie mag that shut down after something like six issues. They described them as PROG and said they sounded like hardcore Rush, so obviously I was all fucking thrilled about hearing them (this was a year or 2 ago, btw, if anyone gives a fuck) When I heard them I was just like, bleh. It wasn't shit and it wasn't great. It didn't sound like Rush at all.

I'd say I won't get fooled again, but I probably will.

I'd like to hear some new band citing BLODWYN PIG as their hot name influence, Blodwyn Pig were fucking great!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Power Metal is big in mainald europe, apparently. I don't know if it means shit anywhere else though.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

BLODWYN PIG oh yah baby!

howell huser (chaki), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Do their fans call them "Coheed"? Or "Cambria"? I mean, I'm sure there's a busy message board on their fan site where I can find out but I can't face it.

Do they sound anything like Magma?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I enjoy "The Suffering" when it's on MTVU. I didn't really care for it at first but it grew on me and I really like it now. Lots of hooks. Better this than that horrible We Are Scientists song. No, it sounds nothing like Magma.

What is power metal? Dio? Early Queensryche??

THERE'S A BAND CALLED RAINBOW IN THE DARK?!?!

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Saturday, 15 October 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

They totally missed Warlord off that list.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Saturday, 15 October 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Rainbow in the Dark" like the Dio song, I presume?

I saw Dio live, years ago. God, it fucking sucked.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 15 October 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

It was the first gig I ever walked out of, now that I think about it. I went to the venue bar, and eavesdropped on the roadies blathering at each other. Th support band was queensryche, they were terrible as well.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 15 October 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I WAS AT THAT GIG!
I WAS 16!
DIO SUCKED EVEN AT THAT AGE!
QUEENSRYCHE RULED THOUGH!

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Saturday, 15 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

My metal head friends have recommended Iced Earth to me.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I think I was 18 or 19. The only reason I went = my sister and here (hot) friend had bought tickets, but her (hot) friend's b/f was insanely jealous and thought that she'd cop off w/dio whoever the guitarist was back then, so she gave the ticket to me.

I must have seen Queensryche on an off night, or perhaps the usual heavy metal support act mysteriously sounding shit due to "pa problems" which are always thankfully resolved before the main act takes the stage. They were pretty bad, but not as bad as other HM support acts I saw in the early '80's - Tank, Anvil, Baron Rojo. I think the only decent HM support act I saw was Ratt, supporting Ozzy.

It was at the time when all metal bands used to have solo spots for the various band members - guitar solo, drum solo etc.
Really fucking boring, interminable, in fact.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

theres this dood that used to jog to a record store i once worked at and hed sing the same weird shit all the time he was listning to in his headphones. i asked him what the shit it was and he said it was operation mindcrime and said it was the number 1 jogging album.
