[ THE PALACE TAVERN ]206 Nassau Ave @ Russell St | Greenpoint, BrooklynG train to Nassau or B48 Bus to Russell | 21+ | $6| 8pm | 718.383.9848 "Somewhere between electronic noise, drone and psychedelic rock, you will find the Brooklyn duo, Mouthus, coiled and ready to strike. On [their Ecstatic Peace! LP] "Loam," Brian Sullivan's impenetrable guitar stirs your emotions and Nate Nelson bangs a primeval beat that pounds through your chest to your very being. Sinister vocal sounds on 'Must Anubis' threaten to spin you back to your caveman past. The movement of sound from chaos to structure is Venus emerging, not from the ocean, but from primordial ooze, then melting back into the goo." "Tono Bungay's, the name appropriated from a title of an H.G. Wells novel, first LP was released by Twisted Village in 1993 setting off a reverberation that continues to effect many of the newer rock bands leaning towards more improvisation. Tono Bungay is composed of Bob Bannister on guitar and Robert Dennis on guitar and electronics and kept in constant forward motion by drummer Tony Cenicola. Their LP "Wunderkammer" opens with their first ever 'song' (with vocals even!), and then careens through 7 purely improvised pieces of brooding psychedelic ecstasy. There's no passage unfilled here; Bannister's guitar navigates the often hazardous free rock river with a confidence of a captain that's got something to say." Kohoutek is a Washington, D.C. band self-described "improvised psychedelia with noise tendencies and abstraction. Sonic explorations in any combination of drums, percussion, guitar, bass, laptop, homemade electronics, field recordings, chord organ, and household appliances." Psychward Love is a new band on the scene featuring Simon from Coney Island guitar monsters Jesus With Me. Come out early to check out the new band's ferocious sounds. Special guest djs Tony Rettman and Joel St. German will, like, play some records, man. It promises to be an awesome time: Also, next Saturday at the Palace:
:: Major Stars(Twisted Village psychlords from Cambridge, Mass.):::: Dr. Ragtime:::::: Miminokoto(http://www6.plala.or.jp/Purifiva/emimi.htm - from Japan, featuring members of Broom Dusters, Aihiyo, LSD March, High Rise, White Heaven and Acid Mothers Temple).

why don't you noise fux get off your nerdy kvetching little asses and book these shows yourselves, then Joel H wouldn't have to come to me with them all the time and I wouldn;t have to read about your bitching.

Miminokoto (http://www6.plala.or.jp/Purifiva/emimi.htm)Dr. Ragtime Major Stars (http://www.twistedvillage.com/label.asp)
Miminokoto is one of Japan's premier psych outfits, featuring members of the legendary High Rise, Acid Mothers Temple, White Heaven and Broom Dusters (among others). This rare US appearance is not to be missed! "Rising from the ashes of Tokyo Velvets obsessives and Keiji Haino collaborators Broomdusters, Miminokoto are a more immediately auraless proposition. Their dynamic blues constructions are held together by taut, clean guitar lines coiling and snapping around a rhythm section that's liable to alter course in mid-air. The hopping patterns beaten out by Ex-White Heaven bassist and drummer Koji Shimura anchor Kawaguchi's machine gun guitar, which stutters in a polyglot tongue drawing equally from Rory Gallagher, Jerry Garcia and Lou Reed. But Kawaguchi's remarkable vocal most defines Minokoto's sound, his distressed moan giving every track the urgency of deathbed blues." -- The Wire (Jan, 2004)
Tequila Sunrise recording artist Dr. Ragtime has been described as "American music at its ragged, self-possessed best and tastes of sand and scorched blue sky every bit as much as Beefheart circa 'Trout Mask Replica,' Fahey’s 'America,' Ornette Coleman’s 'This Is Our Music,' Tony Conrad’s 'Four Violins,' Canon’s Jug Stompers’ 'Minglewood Blues' and Matthew Valentine’s 'Moon Jook.' Just beautiful: can’t recommend this one enough," sez Volcanic Tongue.
Major Stars are the latest incarnation in the long-running quest by Wayne and Kate of the legendary Twisted Village in search of higher, weirder, crazier sounds. Considering the bands they've been in previously - Crystallized Movements, Magic Hour (with Damon and Naomi), B.O.R.B., Wormdoom and Vermonster - it's no surprise that Major Stars blasts out some of the finest psychedelic blues rock boogie these ears have heard. Their new, soon-to-be-released album as a five-piece is staggering.

"Do you take your psychedelic rock seriously? Do you think, "Kids' stuff," when you hear a band such as Viet Nam? Then your cerebral cortex craves the twin-guitar (actually it's three guitars now -h.) blowtorch that is Major Stars, the latest incarnation of Twisted Village's Kate Biggar and Wayne Rogers. Watch where you stand - humans go airborne at their gigs and they've expanded to a sextet, with Sandra Barrett (formerly of LA Drugs) on vocals. Really. Just. So. Strong. Japan's Miminokoto is also possessed of powers that transcend earthliness; the trio's rock is arcanely compelling - and yet, not off-putting at all. We might just lack the words in English to explain it."
