i hate them

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 22 October 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

except for 20 jazz funk greats, that one is pretty rad!

20jfg is good. The key to the hatred has to be M Perpetua.

PRL "mp3blog":

http://www.pataphysics-lab.com/ydl/

which is me self-releasing a load of nonsense under false pretenses...

....

nothing against him, it's sort of shocking that fl**bl** has become the whatever that it is. it actually confirmed my suspicions that success on the web equations have a large random constant called WTF...

i (still) dont really understand about fluxblog. i don't really like that kind of music very much, so ive never really looked. is it that hes kind of made...i dunno, a celebrity thing out of it? like, made himself into a sort of pseudo-industry type figure?

hmm, i just went and looked at it, franz ferdinand? fiery furnaces? nothing against either of these bands, but do people really need mp3 blogs to hear them? ah! is this sort of the beef with them? i can understand that

i presume people like gabba.cc, or have liked it, at some point? i must admit, since nick died, i havent really felt like checking at anymore

i like the idea of mp3 blogs though, but i think to hear 'lost' music, whatever that is...

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

i don't need some fat fuck telling me what he likes to listen to. and i spit on the people who look to matthew perpetua to decide what to listen to next.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

it reminds me a bit of amazon recommendations. when whatever you buy, it says, "if you liked serbian music of the 1400s, then you will probably like this new record, by the killers!"

are there any hapa haole or western swing mp3blogs? there must be, theres one of everything now, at least

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I smolder with generic rage when I think of MP3Blogs.

feminazi (feminazi), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

all rage is generic

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

i agree about avian flublog, but i think mp3 blogs can be great for finding out more about obscure music and out of print stuff. of course, i'm planning to launch my own metal/extreme/noise mp3 blog. moreover, i hardly "read"/use mp3 blogs as it stands.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

if you guys aren't eating and sleeping Bumrocks you're totally lost.

http://www.bumrocks.com/

No info, just songs, keep it simple, and keep the mystery.

I do not know why one would thing Fluxblog represents a single genre of music, I've found it to cover a wide variety of stuff. Some I don't like, some I do.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

it represents joycore

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

i suppose it's a plus that at least doesn't have the bad blurbs. that's something.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

i need an mp3 blog with a kevin saunderson set from 03-05

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I don't like blogs, but I do like mp3's.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 22 October 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

i sorta prefer random ysi links over mp3 blogs. a lot of people say that they hate music blogs when they're just data dumps with no explanation or stated opinion, but for me that's part of the fun. just put it out there and let me decide what the hell to make of it.

katrina vanden roffle (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

I've met Matthew a few times now and he's always been pretty friendly to me and pretty straightforward about his intentions as well: he's been happy to use flux as a tool to turn a buck, to get him free music and into concerts and I don't see why that's worthy of so much hate. Certainly that's no more than your average college DJ does; Matt just happened to come up with a way that hadn't been fully exploited at the time, took a chance and scored.
He really DOES seem to like whatever he posts, fwiw.
Considering I got a job (in?)directly by virtue of the time and work I put in on my blog, I can hardly call that kettle black.
Cutty, can you direct me to the threads where you guys started beef, cuz there's a lotta anger there, sir.
I dunno any haole or cowboy swang exclusive spots, but you might find some here.

Even a great mp3 blog is kind of annoying. It's like somebody coming to your house and dropping off a bunch of records you didn't ask for and some of them are good but you have to sit there and listen to him talk about the records before you can hear them and you're only allowed to listen to one or two songs from each album but when you find one you're really interested you open up the sleeve and the disc is missing.

jw (ex machina), Sunday, 23 October 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

I actually found one that had stuff I'd be interested in (Claudine Longet singing the theme to Rosemary's Baby omg) but none of the mp3s I wanted were available anymore.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Sunday, 23 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

i added the bumrocks podcast to itunes, now it's not even an mp3blog! circumventing the system!

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 23 October 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

it's the shameless self-promotion, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 23 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i have an mp3blog, it's my fucking soulseek file share.

more like going to their house, isn't it?

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

bumrocks as podcast is brilliant, I just go to itunes to see what's up. The only annoying thing is that iTunes treats it like a long podcast, always starting the song where it was left off. I think it adds the songs to the regular library as well, though.

One of the next 2 weeks of bumrocks will be curated by me.

What I love about bumrocks is while it is eclectic, there's a very specific aesthethic or flow to things. It works like a good dj works, play some crazy disco record at the wrong speed, followed by some prog pop song, followed by some moody garage rock record but have it all work. When 20 Jazz Funk Greats did a nice write-up of my mix CD, he referred to some selections as "bumrocks-eque". Whereas you can get a sense of Fluxblog or 20 Jazz Funk Greats tastes/interests, they don't define a genre.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

not that it's a limited easy to define "genre".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Dan, when you guest blog bumnuggets you got to upload Biz Markie - Nobody Beats The Biz -- RAREST DJ JAWN EVAR

eBay Item number: 7358717916 (mookie wilson), Sunday, 23 October 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

btw I cherish mine, bought the last copy EVAR back in '87 at Beat Street. Had to fight off a Dwayne Wayne lookalike who tried to snatch it out of my hands. Then I went to the Albee Square Mall for fro yo.

just like labels... just like fanzines... these things at their best can be great little sifters (or curators even) spreading the gospel about some unknown or totally forgotten oop stuff. shit, there's thousands upon thousands of cds coming out every year. i'm grateful to certain entities for bringing together music that is of consistent quality or style. at the level i'm talking about, that's mostly a thankless job.

i think that's why i've done the fanzine thing for some years... almost as a thank you to bands that don't always get a nod or make a living, but deserve to.

yeah, at worst it's like being subjected to somebody's crappy taste, but at least you can just never click there again. it's not like it's your spouse or something... FUCK, you wanna talk about having to live with somebody's shitty taste, get married. i got billy joel/ani defranco ear scars to show for it...

just my take tho... i respect the mp3blog hatred.

msp (mspa), Monday, 24 October 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

you can get really long cables you know! My turntable is hooked up to my computer for recording via 2 25 foot stereo cables with an adaptor in the middle, 50 feet of cable.

Nobody Beats the Biz is on volume 1 of the Old School Hip Hop bootleg series, with Mona Lisa, La-di, da-di, The Show, South Bronx and The Roof is on Fire. I don't leave the house without it.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 24 October 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)
