i'm using gnome now, but kde has some music programz that might be fun to mess with.

man, why are so many of the good open source music dealies in C++/C? so annoying.

i mean, i get that often people want to stay close to the board for that sort of stuff, it just don't like the baggage required to be there so much.

Linux is awful.

jdubz (ex machina), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

it's much better than it used to be.

Is alsa used by default in every distro now?

jdubz (ex machina), Monday, 31 October 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

it's definitely seriously popular. there's a couple similar things out there now. that's the most annoying thing about linux is that there are so many options, that it's all a little foggy about what's the best route.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

what's pissing me off today about linux is that all the software i've been downloading requires tons of libraries... and then some of those libraries have been unavailable.

AND THEN... some shit is only in source code form... and i just really don't have the patience anymore. i really don't. i'm a fucking coder and i don't have the patience. if i'm downloading shit to record music, i don't want to have to fuckin deal with makefiles right now. i've got enough makefile shit on my other machine with work.

my outer/inner nerd is sulking at his obvious limitations,

the package system is easy

jdubz (ex machina), Monday, 31 October 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

esd is awful. alsa + jack is the way forward. alsa is default in any 2.6 based distro (i.e. every one that i know of).

DR. FRANK EINSTEIN PHD (cprek), Monday, 31 October 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

"the package system is easy"

nice. back in the dark ages, debian was only for those who were happy in textland... i had friends who ran it for ideological reasons and i respected that, but i've always been more of a suse/mandrake/redhat sort of guy. windows/mac land has done that to me. i want to spend my time strictly doing exactly what i want to be doing, not compiling someone else's libraries. laziness, i know.

still tho, even with my "troubles" today, everything has been remarkably good. back in the day, holy shit, i would be in hell still... my monitor would still be flickering, i wouldn't even have my soundcard recognized, etc etc...
