Cool, don't think I'd seen that performance before. I have the version of "Kick Out the Jams" from that same show though. I have a buddy who early on was a co-producer on True Testimonial. He gave me a videotape with a bunch of the TV performances they acquired footage of, but it didn't have that show on it.

Here was the tracklist:

"Kick Out the Jams" (Beat Club 1972 -- with "Steev Moorhouse" on bass!)
"Black to Comm" (Detroit Tubeworks 1967)
"Thunder Express"
"Empty Heart" (Rockenstock 1971)
"Kick Out the Jams" (excerpt) (from Grande Ballroom, no date listed, part of some kind of general rock docu)
"The American Ruse"
"Looking At You" (The Lively Spot 1970 -- also on the bill: Anne Murray!!)
"Kick Out the Jams" (same show as the linked "Rambling Rose"; no date or venue listed on the tape)

He also tacked on a hilarious excerpt of the Stooges doing "TV Eye" and "1970" at the Cincinnati Midsummer Rock festival with these two sportscasters doing like "play-by-play" of the performance: ".. that's ... PEAnut butter!"

and he *told* me that he also had some footage of Frijid Pink playing on Detroit Tubeworks, but I never did get that from him. I should see if he still has that...

"it didn't have that show on it" --> gah, meant to say didn't have that *song* on it

I saw that performance of "Black to Comm" once - very wiggy.

Grr, why did they pick a song where Rob Tyner is lurking around backstage letting Wayne Kramer mug like an idiot? I thought Kramer had turned into a dork in his old age but I didn't realize he was always that way. And why did they tease me by naming the file blacktocomm.mov?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:25 (eighteen years ago) link

The James Brown step he does is rad, tho.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been practicing that step all weekend, almost got it down

Kramer is definitely cheesy in this, but any substantial MC5 clip of decent quality is worthwhile, no?? They brought the rock.

i was wondering where tyner was

You can see him briefly at the 3:00 mark in the back, just to the left of the Marshall stack. Can't miss the hair.

for a band on their last legs, not bad (wayne looks buzzed) and when they finally come together on kotj it's pretty righteous, man
