FREE mint juleps for poor people, Park Slope, Wed Jan 25

An informed source sez my usual South Slope hangout will be the site of a Japanese TV taping on mint juleps (!) tomorrow eve (wednesday) starting at 6.

The show will pay for all the mint juleps drunk by anyone in the bar until they've exhausted their drink budget, or until they're done taping, whichever comes first.

I guess primarily of interest to Ian (if he likes MJs) or hstencil (if he's no longer sick, and wants me to try to dig out my archival copies of K0NFLIKT for the occasion).

i am not positive where lucky 13 is. i think it is like two blocks from me, though. but i could be thinking of somewhere else.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I saw J3N friday night. She's blonde now.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, those are all the details I got up top. LUCKY 13 IS NOT WHERE THE JULEPS ARE! 'ROUND THE CORNER at COMMONWEALTH! (ie, the bar that's for ppl too old for the Royale.)

The Commonwealth dude is from Kentucky, and his juleps are kickass.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

FUJI TV (like the japanese channel 4 or something) is filming a live broadcast here TODAY, basically in two hours, from exactly 4:00pm-5:00pm SHARP, in which, as long as you are here, you can indulge in something for free & they will pay for it. its more about having a crowded room for them to film around, so tell a friend or two. there is a chance you will be interviewed by them, but you can decline. this will free-ness thing will work for any beveragein the cafe and BEER or WINE too. then, after 5pm, you can stick around for our daily 2 for 1 downstairs, which includes the thing where if you spend over $10 in the record store it turns out to be 3 for 1. hurry up, you bums!

Speaking of Slopage.

I spent like $150 at Music Matters the other day.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

geez, do they have ANYTHING in there you couldn't get for less in the EV? I live thisclose and have never bought a thing.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

i don't really like music matters that much! i got a CCR record there once for $4, though.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

nice to see some Slopers, thought you were all from the 'Wicke.

brokeback titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 03:27 (twenty years ago)

also, since when did Music Matters have good stuff? his records are lightly used and he reseals them in filmy plastic so he can overcharge you.

i do dig that little Brawta storefont there.

brokeback titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 03:32 (twenty years ago)

i haven't been in there really. there aren't ANY good stores down here! the places on fifth kinda suck. i have found a few weird/good things at the place @ 5th & ninth, but they're always weird anomalies.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 03:52 (twenty years ago)

i have never found anything good at crazy guy's hut. He once wanted $25 from me for a VG+ Dr Buzzards orig savan band which I got the next week sealed for $5. Everything in the back is stored really badly.

brokeback titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Music Matters isn't much on rarities (it's a small store!) has a great selection of canon fodder. It's great when you need a Chamillionare CD or a Directors Label DVD on a lark.

Their death metal selection is awesome. Everything's priced low and duders take the time to learn your name! It makes me feel like part of a neighborhood or something.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 05:04 (twenty years ago)

what is Music Matters? 5th and 9th place is so weird, old dude who has to keep up, I remember him having a very lucid conversation about the Wu with some locals. I also bought a Durutti Column record there for 2 dollars, which was a steal. He let me in the basement during a 5th ave street fair but it was too dusty. He has 100s of Freestyle 12"s for 6 dollars each, when none should cost more then 2.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 05:11 (twenty years ago)

i'll come to this!

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm not sure when the Japanese TV money will dry up tho (and more than 3 juleps, you're askin for it). My ETA looks like 7:30.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

That link takes you to a place called Commonwealth, but everyone else is saying Lucky 13... which is the name of the place with mint juleps?

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

commonwealth, according to morbs. and that makes sense, since commonwealth is the kentucky bar. don't worry which it is, laura, both are easy to find.
do you have an ETA? 6:30? 7?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

COMMONWEALTH

I heard something about the Japanese planning to pass this off as a Kentucky Derby party. So ... wear yr antebellum threads?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

laura, are you going to talk to the japanese IN JAPANESE, tonight?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

the kentucky derby was started after the war, morbs.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

ihttp://www.ralphsteadman.com/images/00art/gonzo/01derby.jpg

you probably just need a hat

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping to be there by 6:30 Ian. I want to meet you, when are you coming? I will try to speak to the Japanese in Japanese! Sometimes it just confuses them a lot because they don't expect it

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

i think i'm coming around 7. it's very easy to get there from where i am... i might even walk if it isn't too cold.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah stenc, but the retro-crats who dress for it nowadays don't care.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

and you've ever been to the kentucky derby???!?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

TV, dude! (I have been to Derby parties at my friend's bar.)

So yer not traveling for juleps -- feel OK?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Wait one cotton picking minute -- my midtown drinkzors just fell through but now I'm free to noize it up. Commonwealth, you say? Hmmmmmm.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:20 (twenty years ago)

too late, we disinvited you.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Nobody told me, Ian. :((((

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

we didn't think it would be necessary :(

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

If I turn up, do you promise to shun me?

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I promise nothing

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

i promise.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Perfect.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

I promise to stop cockblocking

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:51 (twenty years ago)

dumprings were tasty

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:41 (twenty years ago)

sorry I was in such a crappy mood... lots of ups and downs lately.... nervous...

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:52 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for showin up, kids! You and your circumcision convo! You were not in a crappy mood on the Morbius Scale, Jon.

And I don't sleep with young str8 men, unless some "Freaky Friday" thing turns me into a 25-y.o. female.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Jon's crappy moods are not always visible to the naked eye because they manifest mostly as passive aggression towards people he thinks will take shit from him.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Also, mint juleps are possibly the worst drinks I've ever had.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

phil OTM.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Laura, MJs taste better when you're drinking them on Derby Day (with pie) and everyone is shitfaced by 5pm.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

It's good that you know that, Laura. Also, have a glass of wine with me, next time, and leave the bourbon to Ian. He loves that shit.

Jon, I didn't notice your bad mood, either, but I have younger brothers, so don't try it. Fingers crossed for the web gig.

Nice to see you, Morb!

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

i like mint juleps. sorry i got there too late to partake. i didn't notice any bad moods; i just figure that everyone gets a little cranky and quiet when it's cold out.
