Why Candling Can't Work

Since wax is sticky, the negative pressure needed to pull wax from the canal would have to be so powerful that it would rupture the eardrum in the process. However, candling produces no vacuum. Researchers who measured the pressure during candling of ear models found that no negative pressure was created. The same investigators candled eight ears and found that no ear wax was removed and candle wax was actually deposited in some of them! [3]

The notion that the ear canal is connected to structures beyond the eardrum is false. A review of a good anatomy book should dispel this notion. The external ear canal, with an intact eardrum, is not connected to the brain, the sinuses targeted by the procedure (those above your eyes), or the Eustacean tubes (the passageways between the internal ear and the back of the throat). While some claim that the eardrum is porous and quickly allows impurities to pass through, this is untrue. The "impurities" that appear in the collected wax (usually on a paper plate or other collecting device) are nothing more than the ashes from the burnt wick and wax of the cone itself.

so i got the new Mono album in the mail, and i got kinda stoned and put it on the headphones cuz i wanna like it even though i really didn't like that last album - actually i never made it thru the whole thing. there was one song that was soooooo godspeedy that i couldn't take it and i took it off - and i'm always looking for more guitar noise, and at first it's great cuz the sound is all albini big and loud and that's cool, but after awhile i end up feeling like it's work to listen to it. dudes keep going up that same damned mountain over and over again. i feel like i'm carrying their bags or something. they have perfected that godspeed mountainclimbing formula, and they are tenser and they attack harder, but it's still...i don't know, it's like jesus are we there yet? i mean i already know where we are going. i ended up skipping to the noisy parts. that worked pretty good.

Keith Fullerton Whitman and one other guy whose name I don't know run this rad reissue label of extremely obscure musique concrete and early electronic music LPs- stuff that is so super obscure that it ain't getting reissued any other way- they put out CDRs in teensy editions of 50 or so with nice paper sleeves, and they sell em on the Mimaroglu site.

I have lots of them, and of particular note I recommend:
Josef Anton Riedl
Salvatore Martirano "LG"
Morris Knight "After Guernica"
Jean Claude Eloy "Shanti"
Tod Dockstader "Electronic" (his production library music!)

that don cherry is fabulous. it's his electric "dancefloor" album.

here's what i said on the ilm thread: Brown Rice (aka Don Cherry) - great album with mellow fusiony, almost rare groove backing. (think Lonnie Liston Smith mixed with In a Silent Way & a tad more eastern flavor). lots of spooky whispery voices all over the place.
