How did these even come about?! Of all the people to rep for Guinness, how did they decide on Lee Perry? I like the commercials and everything, it just seems like a really unusual choice.

THESE ARE EPIC

Dr. Lawrence Jacoby (FAGZ0RD OF THE LAKES), Saturday, 29 April 2006 05:38 (twenty years ago)

considering they had caribbean day parade tri-color bottles last summer, i think they are pretty into that marklet.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Saturday, 29 April 2006 05:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I guess I obviously wasn't aware of Guinness' foreign markets. Apparently, Guinness is more popular in Nigeria than it is in the US.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Saturday, 29 April 2006 06:32 (twenty years ago)

yep, nigerians are into lee perry more than funky college bros.

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

nigerian people = black so must like dub reggae?

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 29 April 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

nonono I wasn't implying that at all!! After jinx mentioned that Guinness put out the Caribbean Day Parade tri-color bottles, I did some some quick research on Guinness' international markets, of which I was more or less totally unaware. I came across this site: http://www.diageo.com/en-row/ourbrands/ourglobalbrands/guinness/
which lists Nigeria as the third largest market for Guinness in the world. I thought that was interesting, and I mentioned it as a general comment on Guinness's international market, not as some dumbshit generalization about black people. That post wasn't a reference to Lee Perry at all.

weird, i was having beers this afternoon and a friend told me the second biggest Guinness brewery is in Nigeria. then i mentioned this Lee Perry noise anecdote which i read in the "newspaper".

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Sunday, 30 April 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

also, supposedly, Nigerian Guinness is sickly sweet.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Sunday, 30 April 2006 00:33 (twenty years ago)

according to answers.com, "Nigeria is the third largest and fastest-growing Guinness market in the world. However, as the cultivation of barley is restricted in Nigeria, the local version is made primarily from sorghum." Maybe the sorghum accounts for the sweetness?

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Sunday, 30 April 2006 00:57 (twenty years ago)

molasses beer? sounds gross frankly.

geoff (gcannon), Sunday, 30 April 2006 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Nigerian Foreign Extra Stout is widely avaliable in London at competitive prices. It tastes very similar, but doesn't have the thickness to constitute a meal. Reccomend heating gently and adding a little conrnflour. To be served with a radish compote.
