elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

msp i think i will be there as well. what are you looking to do here?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

oh, and when do you get in? there's a good show at the bottle friday and a party in wicker park if you're up for either/both.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

hey msp i'll see if i can get some suggestions up later today. definitely should hit dusty groove for some record looking-at, if not shopping.

i sorta wish i could be there, and had an offer to be "kidnapped" out to chicago this weekend, but i have this wedding to go to.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

i had a very tasty brunch at a place called orange on n. clark. be sure to have the orange coffee.

I am going to see Mission of Burma and not-Rita. oh and I guess there are 2 or 3 indie bands playing in between them or something. hit me up msp, this email works.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

mission of burma is gonna smoke it. they were so good here a couple weeks ago.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

i can't wait to see them.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

me and the couple guys going up with me will get up there friday evening some time.

my email is the one above.

i'm supposed to hook up with mac/whitey/whitesnake at some point. i'm not sure what the other guys are up for.

all i know at this point is... deep dish pizza and hot dogs.

we'll be up for whatever i'm thinking. taking it as it comes.

god, it's been like 7 years since i really went to chicago. drove through maybe 4 years ago, but...

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

m.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 27 July 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

HOT DOUG'S X 10000000

Bars:

California Clipper
Ronny's (super-divey bar near my old apt, mostly filled with middle-aged Hispanic men. filled = 3)
Small Bar (the original one, a few blocks from my friends' new apartment....kinda in the middle of nowhere, though. which is why it's nice, I guess)
Skylark

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

Be sure to make out with jaymc (he has to wait another year for me).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

oo la la!

let's beer people. let's beer.
m.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

beer me in.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

the clipper i don't dig.
you've got to go to club foot.
where are you staying? that would seemingly dictate where to go. no sense recommending the hopleaf if you'll be in hyde park.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 27 July 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

i went to the clipper once with jaymc

/jaymc

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

eh, we're staying out by o'hare. that was where we could get a cheap room.

originally we had a pack of 7... and so divided by 7, we could have gotten a place really cheap. then that dwindled to 4. and now, we are three.

lesson here kids: "don't trust anybody over 25-30ish to follow through on hair-brained schemes."

it's nothin but "we're all of a sudden broke" or "my kid's arm fell off"... freakin lame. i've got toe-nail cancer, twelve broken ribs, and a late library book, you don't see me backin out now, do ya!? i mean, it's not mission of burma for nothin, w00t-a-nanny!

but we can figure something out. perhaps we won't be able to crank out the midnight oils, but hey...
m.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

our plan is to take the train in .... etc.

we did want to drive in sunday for the quick get away, but then the planned parking option vanished.
m.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

msp do you really have all those things wrong with you?

nazi bikini (harbl), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

blue line to o'hare runs 24 hours. just sayin'.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

that late library book is gonna haunt you the whole trip!

tehresa needs more out of this relationship than she's willing to put in (tehres, Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

yeah seriously, for me that's worse than 12 broken ribs

nazi bikini (harbl), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

xp blue line

Plus, goes through the better bar-having neighborhoods of the northwest side.

...otto, you don't like the Clip? It's a bit of a junkshow on a Friday night, but mid-week there's no better place to get a quiet, old-timey drink and talk Heavy Shit with a buddy or two.

Decent place for a date, too.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

nah, i'm bein silly. although, i may have something overdue. hmm.
m.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

"blue line." noted.
m.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

last two times i was at the clipper have sucked. once was on a friday and the place was full of meatheads. next time was early (9-ish) on a saturday after going to feed. there were groups of what appeared to be suburbanites in mom jeans and sneakers in there. haven't been back since. monday night bingo was fun there though.

club foot is within walking distance of the division blue line stop. just sayin'. or estelle's is around the corner from the damen stop if it goes to extra innings.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

oh, and gbx, i'm going to some sort of critical mass afterparty friday night? wtf?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

club foot sucks, too rockabilly-ish last i checked (years ago admittedly). like the union pool of chicago but worse.

supposed to be 96 on sunday. stay cool.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

nary a rockabilly dude to be found at the foot h.
i've noticed it's getting younger in there during the week, too many kids who are just discovering the '80s.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

i've never understood the appeal of club foot. not much atmosphere. if punk-rock bars are yr thing (what am i saying "if" -- i'm talking to otto for chrissakes), delilah's is better.

clipper's cool. i think it was actually a couple times, stence, wasn't it? btw, some dude from bard just started writing for stylus. i asked him if he knew you (and n.z.), and he was all, i graduated in 2005. fuckin' youngsters.

and yeah, msp, i'll be there. e-mail me if you want to meet up sometime at the festival.

morbs -- you have plans to come to chicago next year? i was hoping i'd be in nyc before then, but it doesn't look too likely right now.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

oh and elmo, too -- holla.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

noize board is turning into j-date

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

like i said: the clip is a junkshow on the weekends. plus: rockabilly out the ass, since they have a regular crew of sideburns playing honky-tonk most fridays. but, the girls like to dance, so go with it.

club foot i've never been to. delilah's was fun one out of the two times i went there. i still highly recommend the skylark, ronny's and the original small bar. also happy village, if you can get a table outside.

dudes: i'm back in Chi in about two weeks. i'll be leaning on Sh4rks to have another drunkzone karaoke party at their spot, you should come. i'll be there for a week plus. if you know of any good shows coming up, let me know, because i'm fucking desperate for shit that isn't mountain-town frat rock or bluegrass. barf city.

xp gay date more like

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

delilah's is better.

agreed but delilah's isn't within a short cab/bus ride from union park, near the blue line, or within walking distance from my place.

the appeal of club foot for me is primarily it's location, the fact that it's cheap, there is at least a 60% chance the dj will spin stuff i like, and it's easy to avoid hipsters and meatheads there. but primarily the location. i walked home from delilah's this winter and it was no fun.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

most bars are junk shows on the weekend.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

xp gay date more like

that joke was too easy

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 27 July 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Crash Palace .. I mean, Delilah's .. was the second to last place I saw Charlie Ondras alive.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 27 July 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

email me at the emailing place. i must detach from teh pickel barrens and prepare for departure. (1 pile of dishes must be done.)

m.

msp (mspa), Friday, 28 July 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

i fly into midway tomorrow night & will be staying at the emb4ssy suites downtown, only thing i could get short notice. i must wash a preperatory load of laundry, but folks should email, address below is correct. i think i will be hitting bars in boystown with an ex-nyc friend one night, who knows, i really have few plans.

jaymc hollaa

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Friday, 28 July 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

gbx, when are you back? i'll be in san diego from the 10th to the 15th. hopefully that's not when you'll be here.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 28 July 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

jaymc, my baseball confab is in St Louis next summer, so I will need to go to Chicago before/after 4 days in the Busch family's cultural mecca.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

morbs, we should definitely make plans for a ballgame.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

i'll be in san diego from the 10th to the 15th. hopefully that's not when you'll be here

that's pretty much exactly when I'll be there ;_;

gbx (skowly), Friday, 28 July 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

sorry i missed you, msp. and i was only able to say hi to elmo for a few minutes. basically, i was scrambling to see people and bands all weekend. exhausting.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 July 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i about to apologize as well.

hot band hot band food hot band band hot cell phone flip out, wtf? hot band band catch train swimming pool fuck a beer i'm a ghostland hermit i suck oh well bah.

by the end of both days i was thinking, "i'm just too nasty and tired to enjoy going to a bar right now." (well, and we drove home after the show last night. got home around 6am. work at 8:30!)

i didn't even bother hooking up with nashville peeps i knew that came up. i barely even spent much time with the guys i came up with either. we were all torn in several directions.

msp (mspa), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

insert the appropriate "was" in that first sentence.
m.

msp (mspa), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

this weekend tore me up like a buzzsaw.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

i can relate. i was impressed with the prices of food and drink there however. helped me stay well, but i seriously overheated in the biz tent a couple times cause we were dancin. thankfully, i didn't puke.
m.

msp (mspa), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for all yer suggestions.

got to hit giordano's (i'm sorry but zachary's in oakland is better. !!!!), some random hot dog place that was exactly what i wanted even if it might have been < hot doug's. dusty groove was sweeters and definitely worth the praise. took my pals over to reckless just so they could browse for indier things. picked up goods for my special ladywife at trader joes.

i'll have to come back up for a visit soon and actually get to hang with you guys. (i've got family near, so it's a likely thing.)

m.

msp (mspa), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

for what it's worth i think giordano's blows.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

2x

Thanks again for the ticket, msp.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Monday, 31 July 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Did they play "Desculpe, Baby?"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 31 July 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not sure. i was partly annoyed by the sound... because their sound felt contemporized and i guess part of me really hated that. their singer over-sang. the bassist slapped too much. the guitarist noodled. the kick drum was over-mic'ed. eventually i was digging their thing and enjoyed it, but it's as if intermediate periods of rock sort of ruined the simple zen-like restraint that they had while recording some of their earlier records. that and everything sounding full-ish as opposed to tin canny really screwed it up for me. that and the overwhelming smell of hot dogs where i was standing.
