there's a group of musicians in providence who are also members of the iww. they were on a protest march in north providence and the local police went overboard, tackling a protester and breaking one of her legs. severely.

I actually met that woman at a show the night before the march, she was playing violin with a local band, high plains thunder. she's going to need 3 surgeries at least to fix her leg. ugh. so sick over this.

it just boggles the mind. it's like they went to the mayor daley school of crowd control. in their initial statement to the press, the police said they were "severely outnumbered". by what, a bunch of brown university students?

it makes me kind of bummed that Jacky's Galaxy was implicated--I used to like eating at the West Warwick branch when I was in high school.

ironic that the anarchists are complaining about the very thing that most justifies their existance.

excuse me from reading the information provided by the link:
I think thats the point of the IWW mate, its organised as an anarcho-syndicalist union (even if its not exclusively anarchist) therefore everyone has an equal say, its entirely democratic, unlike the cops who did that to the lady in the pictures.
while not exclusively anarchist it is an anarcho-syndicalist union. here's one definition of anarchism:
1. The theory or doctrine that all forms of government are oppressive and undesirable and should be abolished. 2. Active resistance and terrorism against the state, as used by some anarchists. 3. Rejection of all forms of coercive control and authority
i would say the police in question are displaying coercive control and authority.

elmo, there's a protest march on the 26th in north providence, not sure if you'd wanna show up for that. suffice it to say I'm fucking enraged and wild horses couldn't drag etc.
providence journal coverage of this started out shakey but has been pretty good the past few days:
http://www.beloblog.com/ProJo_Blogs/newsblog/archives/2007/08/update_injury_a.html#more
Alexandra had already had one operation to reattach a detached fibula (calf bone), and will be having another to reattach severed arteries and relieve pressure from accumulating fluids, Scott said.
Alexandra's mother, Jan Enstrom, said the first surgery harvested a vein from Alexandra's foot to repair the artery and it saved the leg.
She said the second operation is to increase the blood flow to the lower leg and to make sure she will have use of the leg.

You *can* get health insurance through a lot of colleges, especially state schools, but that doesn't mean that people do.
This seems like a pretty nasty overreaction to some protesters, but not knowing the Providence police I wouldn't put this past chalking it up as a couple officers freaking out a little too quickly. It's just incredibly fucked up that they managed to mangle her leg instead of just knocking her over.
I wonder if there's any good resource online about a riot that happened in my college town a couple years after I left, where the police both caused and fueled it... complete with tear gas.

to clarify, north providence and providence are separate cities with separate police forces -- north providence, while not without crime, is a lot more suburban, even provincial in my experience. so while it might be tempting to lump the NPPD in with the notoriously violent PPD, i'd have to credit providence cops with a little more experience in dealing with protesters and activists. these were just 2nd-rate pigs who had no experience dealing with peaceful assembly and seriously misjudged how to respond.
