INSTANT NEW STEREOLAB ALBUM

Free the Bee (ex machina), Sunday, 19 September 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Having hardly gotten around listened to Dots and Loops and the one after that much and then not even getting the last two, this idea does not excite me.

all you need is MARS AUDIAC QUINTET and EMPEROR TOMATO. and maybe TRANSIENT RANDOM NOISE NOISE NOISEBURSTS.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 20 September 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i have mars audiac quintet still, i think. IT IS TOO LONG. GETS MAD BORING.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 20 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

IAN I AM WAITING FOR TEH SOLO WEEDMANG

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 20 September 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

he and i had a chat yesterday.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 20 September 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Mars Audiac Quintet may be too long, but it was the apotheosis of their fairly stunning growth as a GROOP.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i am very partial to the heavier early singles with the harmonium, farfisa, and fender jaguar drone jams.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

all you need is Swtiched On Stereolab, Peng!, Transient Random Noise Bursts, Mars Audiac Quintent, Switched On Vol 2 (Refried Ectoplasm), and Emperor Tomato Ketchup.

noize boyz have to have switched on 2 at least for the Nurse With Wound collaborations.

For some reason Space Age Bachelor Pad never did it for me, though to some, that is THE essential Stereolab record.

i have seen stereolab 30 times

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them once, with Drive Like Jehu.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I just have ETK and TRNBWA right now.
-- AaronHz (aaronh...), September 20th, 2004.

same here. i love those, but i'm not sure i really want or need any more.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw stereolab with sonic yoof.

dan's post reminded me that i have refried ectoplasm and like some of the tracks a lot but hardly ever listen to it. stereolab = total wallpaper for me, dudes!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Stereolab = it has a good beat and you can ignore it

Free the Bee (ex machina), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

those of with only ETK and TRNBWA should get Mars Audiac Quintent and Peng and Swtiched On. The first two "rock" and have really good songs while MAQ is really the best synthesizer album they did.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Stereolab with:

The Dirty Three (stereolab had David Pajo on bass)
Prolapse (stereolab had Sonic Boom on guitar)

and then in 2002 inbetween Merzbow and The Dead C (no shit).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I am in Stereolab.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I booked Stereolab once. Laetitia was really nice but prefers Californian wine to French wine.

SABPM IS GREAT. SO IS ETK.

GETTING HIT BY A CAR = DUD

ddb (ddb), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like the Music for the Amporphous Body Center or something like that... if you enjoy The Groop Played SABPM, you will love this.

I think my favorite stuff involved Sean O'Hagan.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah Mary was a really nice person the one time I met her, it totally sucks about her untimely death. RIP.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

hit by a car?!

wha? details?

i've never been "hit", but i had a car pull out in front of me while on my bike and i rolled over his hood. not fun, but i thank my stars that i walked away from that with not much to fix. the guy was super-apologetic too, so i guess it was about as positive as that sort of situation can go.

not so positive was mary's death. rip indeed.

the sean h. stuff was good. i still really dig cobra, etc and think it didn't get what it deserved. lab was probably my favorite band for a good bit of time. i think it fit in with the heavy doses of positivism of the late 90s. their stuff embodied love and wonder for me. "redneck dreams of futuristic, tropical paradise"

where's my jetpack?

musta left it on the hood of that damned car.

msp (msp), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary Hanson died after getting hit by a car while riding her bike in australia.

i told my story there but i'll tell it again. fairly early on during the aforementioned show with Prolapse at the troubador in 95, i was walking thru the dense crowd from the club entrance behind these three women and i accidentally stepped on the back of one woman's mary janes, essentially giving her a "flat tire". as she reached down to slip her heel back in the shoe, i bent down to apologize and when she looked up at me it was Mary from Stereolab. i apologized immensely and she was really nice and funny about it.

sadly,
gygax!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was that she got hit by a truck, in London.

Cobra, etc. is good. Unfairly maligned.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

where is my head? gone.
m.

msp (msp), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it was london, i have no idea why i thought it was australia.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

well she was from there.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Gaunt vs. Stereolab

ddb (ddb), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

:-(

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

omg Gaunt were fucking awful. I mean, I am sorry about the dude dying and all, nobody deserves that, but serious, one of the worst bands I've ever seen. Gaunt and Brainiac on a bill together = fucking fucking horrible shit. Throw in a comedian making "jokes" about indie rock (whom we heckled). Only Melt Banana, Shellac, and Jim O'Rourke in a jester suit saved the day.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you are being insensitive

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Brainiac were great...fuck off OLD MAN

ddb (ddb), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

DDB OTMFM

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry Brainiac dude died but if there weren't already Jon Spencer and Ian Svenonius to cheatsheet from, he wouldn't exist.

hstencil23: I guess, anyway, I am horribly awesome.
EgonKrud: HA!
EgonKrud: OTM!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you're too young to appreciate trumans water.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever dude I saw them.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

with glen?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

naw, later. I heard all those recs tho, never did much for me.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i can't speak for the post-94 stuff, but the early stuff with glen and eli is insanely incredible NOIZE ROCK.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Stereolab, although I liked them SO MUCH for a while there that it's hard to muster very much enthusiasm for them anymore.

Oddly enough, though, I have only seen them twice: once in Chicago (Papa M opened) and once in Pontiac, Michigan, where they opened for Sonic Youth.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them for free in Central Park after John Cale, then again at Oberlin.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Charles Shaw wines are from Chile, NZ and Aus.

the story I heard on this winery was that it was sold by the guy's ex-wife for really cheap (for like, $10000 or something) to the new owners, who have been able to sell the wine cheaply as a result. is this true or some insane urban legend I perpetuate?

I like all stereolab albums. why not?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it is not true (the divorce thing). but it is true that the grapes are from california, not chile or anywhere else.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Why not?"

Exactly. Given their growth at the time, though, an album like Mars Audiac Quintet seemed fairly awesome. They've lost that spirit, I think. (Haven't heard the last two.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

but it is true that the grapes are from california, not chile or anywhere else.

weird, that's not what the bottles say.

btw kyle, i got your msgs, i had a wedding shower to go to that i forgot about though. did you guys have fun?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

we broke into your apartment and had a big party. sorry for the mess

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 20 September 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)
