do you think your empathy for political radical liberation resistances are due to a) your other feelings of impotence within your own nominally democratic political structure, such that identification with these separatist/nationalist/socialist movements creates a sense of catharsis, b) symptomatic of your own freedom in a real democracy which you feel ethically compelled to extend to all ppl everywhere (nb this is the opposite of choice a), or c) some third unidentified reason? i'm specifically interested in the correlation (if any) between living in an ostensibly liberal western democracy and yet rooting for the basques, or ya know, body modification proponents. plz make statements as sweeping as possible - try to speak for all western leftists in the world if you can.

Absolutely a), absolutely not b). Oppression is everywhere, and community is under threat from forces that would atomise it into consumer demographics or worse. Democracy is a sham. Self-expression is a political fight against the reductive machinations of the exploiter, except when it's co-opted by the exploiter as a means to slyly force a consumer identity. Communities abstracting themselves from direct servitude in any cultural, financial or aesthetic sense is imperative

how does the Innocent Smoothies aesthetic factor into this?

wd argue that this "except" approaches 100 percent in cultures exposed to capitalist economics. there are possible resistances/subversions that don't rely on ideas of authenticity.

don't all birds rest athwart shrub or tree branches, it's difficult to see how or why a bird would sit parallel to the course of a branch

did you just agree 'lux' with 'aeternam'? it's either 'lucem' or 'aeterna' depending on object/subject. 'he/she/it will have borne eternal light' vs 'eternal light will have borne'. sort it out nakhers

imago, I meant to ask this on the Hero and Leander thread but I forgot: What do you think of the band Dogs Die in Hot Cars? I ask because I think this track of theirs sounds like Cardiacs being covered by Hero and Leander and I wanted to see if you agreed.

Oh wow, this is VERY Cardiacs at points, melodically speaking! Obviously with a great big indie-rock sheen & dull songwriting. I mean, it doesn't have the magic but it's got something of the spirit.
― kaputtinabox (imago), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link
I always liked them, there seemed to be something very confused in the way they were conceived and marketed- like, on the one hand some of the stuff they did seemed to be trying to position them as 00's equivalent to Squeeze something and then they did press shots like this (NSFW).

good lord
yeah they were put across as 'another indie band' but there's maybe more to them
picked up Joe Jackson, Squeeze too makes sense. for me the 70's/80's synthpop band that nobody's tried to follow up at all is foxx-era Ultravox! and I think that's telling (that Ultravox! were fucking amazing)
