imago, I meant to ask this on the Hero and Leander thread but I forgot: What do you think of the band Dogs Die in Hot Cars? I ask because I think this track of theirs sounds like Cardiacs being covered by Hero and Leander and I wanted to see if you agreed.

Oh wow, this is VERY Cardiacs at points, melodically speaking! Obviously with a great big indie-rock sheen & dull songwriting. I mean, it doesn't have the magic but it's got something of the spirit.

I always liked them, there seemed to be something very confused in the way they were conceived and marketed- like, on the one hand some of the stuff they did seemed to be trying to position them as 00's equivalent to Squeeze something and then they did press shots like this (NSFW).

yeah they were put across as 'another indie band' but there's maybe more to them

picked up Joe Jackson, Squeeze too makes sense. for me the 70's/80's synthpop band that nobody's tried to follow up at all is foxx-era Ultravox! and I think that's telling (that Ultravox! were fucking amazing)

there are probably a few ultravoxx imitators lurking around, they def have some blogosphere cachet more than most of that era

I hear they really like Ultravoxx in Portland, OR. Have you considered moving there?

my favourite song of all time is soft machine's moon in june which is at the progrock end of jazz but is in the lineage

there's so much jazz and i find it hard to get a semiotic handle on it. lots of improv, lots of fluid & rambling semi-composition. hard for me to think of that much beyond a transient experience - certainly not a 'song' or an 'album' (songs. albums.) to have 'definite opinions' about. shit's cool y'know but i find jazz best experienced in a live or ambient setting

anyway whether nandos is shit or not is beside the point, which is whether nandos is real

by this point it is real. perhaps not on its own, but a fight at nandos or a wedding reception at nandos would be plureal, magnificently real

The Haim album is possibly my favourite of the year but I agree that it doesn't seem quite like AOTY material. Then again I don't think I've heard an album this year that immediately struck me as a legit classic like Kaleidoscope Dream or Let England Shake.

I think it will be fascinating this year because there's so little consensus in the lists and the ones that are cropping up a lot so far aren't ILX favourites. From my own top 10 I can see Vampire Weekend, John Grant, Haim and Kacey doing well but I'm not sure what else will place.
