I didn't remember this until I was searching for something and saw the picture, but I definitely had these. You could take off their heads to reveal a marker tip!

I also had this weird thing that was called Hoppopotamus, a hybrid rabbit and hippopotamus from a cartoon show called the Wuzzles. I don't remember any of the other characters really except Butterbear.

Aw, I think my school had one of those or something. You squeezed the bulb, if I remember correctly, to cause the lid to flap up and down, alternately revealing and concealing a rubbery Grouch head?

the instruction manual gave designs for 20+ animals, but none of them looked quite right, with the exception of the almighty, elegant lobster:

Mine was an older version in grey, yellow, and white. Fiddly as hell to get working properly, especially the loader in the middle. Also required fresh batteries as otherwise the dumper wouldn't make it up the gradient at the back.

How funny! Someone just reminded me today that my grandmother used to have all these Avon dolls/products, and that I played with them every time I went to my grandparents' house, but I probably haven't thought about them in 25 years. I'm having REALLY strong nostalgia and reactions to looking at them!

I can't find most of the really edge-of-memory stuff on GIS :(

Take my word for it, tho, there was a REALLY creepy rubber Mickey Mouse. And a totally awesome treasure island with pirate ship and figurines. And loads of Dinky Toys.

Still on a Disney tip...
http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/cartoon/images/Disney/popup-goofy.JPG
The site the image is from says "GOOFY The Astronaut in Space Capsule. (...) 1960's hard plastic. Jack-in-the-box type toy. Push the button, the lid pops open and GOOFY pops out! approx. 4.5" tall. excellent. This is without a doubt, the rarest one in this series. $65"
I have no idea where the feck it is now... $65!!!

snoball, Friday, 6 March 2009 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno whether I should say 'lol u guys is old' or 'wow, you had some cool stuff growing up.' fun thread though!

http://i40.tinypic.com/a3ntw1.jpg

not sure what these were called (they're not Puppy in my Pocket, and google doesn't seem to help), but Topps mfg'd these tiny plastic dogs that you could buy at convenience stores for about $1 each, packed in aluminum pouches along with a booklet, edible dog bone, and stickers. I must've bought about 20 of them from the mini-mart at the campground my family stayed at on summer weekends. I kept them on my nightstand and made little beds for them out of cloth swatches and old cardboard jewelery boxes. I was PISSED when my friend borrowed and lost the brown hobo pup with the red handkerchief around his neck. At one point I even sent a letter to Topps asking if they could send me a black lab that I could never seemed to find even though it was advertised in the booklet. They kindly obliged. In retrospect, I was kinda obsessed with these cheap hunks of plastic for a couple months.

WANT

dumbsocietypigeons (unregistered), Saturday, 7 March 2009 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

Holy shit. i've had nothing to add to this thread since I fully remember all my toys. At least I thought I did until I saw My Pal up there.

Guys, Meet "Alphie"

http://www.theoldrobots.com/images19/alphie44.JPG

I barely remember anything about him except you had to stick those cards over his chest and the buttons all corresponded with the noises, etc.

"What Did You Say?"

wait a minute, maybe it was Alphie II.

True to the thread title, I barely remember this thing.

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 7 March 2009 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

i think my earliest memory is holding my moms hand and walking through the mall
but then again i keep telling myself this every two years - and the visual aspect of this memory is probably just b.s. I've invented over the years to go along with the words

^^^ it's possible to hack the fuck out of that - the tape deck is stereo, one channel has the audio and the other channel has the control signals that open the mouth, etc..

snoball, Sunday, 8 March 2009 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

I need to do this
you know, to soil childhood memories

turtles all the way down (Face of Wolf), Sunday, 8 March 2009 11:37 (seventeen years ago)

It's fairly straightforward, you don't even need to modify the bear. Just get an old TR tape, get it into your computer, and then use an audio editor to add a new soundtrack and copy the control signals to match it. Then record it to a blank tape, pop it into the bear and there ya go.

snoball, Sunday, 8 March 2009 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

OH, sorry, you don't realize that I'm retarded :(
"then use an audio editor to add a new soundtrack and copy the control signals to match it." is not straight forward for someone who is retarded.
BUT I will figure out how to do this anyways
