Or unless it's brisket or something like that that needs to be dripping off the bone. I need to go find some brisket now.

re. meat that is not controversial I think?

I hate undercooked rice, the crunchy core disgusts me

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:59 (five years ago) link

All of rice is disgusting. There is no saving it. Although I do like rice pudding. I used to eat uncooked oatmeal as a kid with just a little milk.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:01 (five years ago) link

German, American and Asian types of link sausages are generally disgusting as well.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

dang I love lap xuong but I'm the only one in my family who does
I don't know what american link sausages are, as opposed to like hot dogs?

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

American link sausages are likely bastardized versions of italian, polish, german etc. And then those weird sausages that they put in a spiral with skewers keeping them together so you can put it on the grill? I think there is a word for those?

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

There is definitely an emoji for those

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:17 (five years ago) link

ok I don't know those, maybe it's an east coast thing? the sausage I got in the dumb midwest was generally as on par with what I get in central Europe. (I don't think French sausage types really exist in the usa, just maybe louisiana versions which are quite their own thing)

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:24 (five years ago) link

Oh they are called sausage rings. blech.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:43 (five years ago) link

I used to buy frozen lorne sausage as it was easily the cheapest meat available at asda circa 1998

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 18 October 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link

Is that spam

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 18 October 2018 16:15 (five years ago) link

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 18 October 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

I would eat that.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link

And then those weird sausages that they put in a spiral with skewers keeping them together so you can put it on the grill? I think there is a word for those?

I think these are basically Italian? I mean the quality depends on the meatcutter or company that made them but generally I think the spiral form is an Italian thing.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Thursday, 18 October 2018 17:03 (five years ago) link

Italian sausage is my least favorite sausage by a wide margin.

Italian sausage and kielbasa are in a fite for the worst. And those weird smoked beef U shaped things sold in supermarkets.

Plus I genuinely love sausages and have opinions about them

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 18 October 2018 17:48 (five years ago) link

I like kielbasa! It's smoked.

I especially hate the fresh kielbasa. The smoked is slightly better.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 17:51 (five years ago) link

oh, I just remembered that you are from michigan. Of course you like kielbasa.

Tell you what - I've never been to the USA, but I spent most of my adulthood in China, and very familiar with the few overpriced western grocery stores in major cities which only had US stuff, a little Australian, maybe a few French things, never anything from the UK. The sausages and bacon were always pre-cooked. Literally was unable to buy raw bacon or sausages at all. Is this a refrigeration / transport issue or are these things generally pre-cooked?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

precooked bacon is available but it is a comedy product aimed at miserable people. precooked microwavable frozen breakfast sausage is probably somewhat more popular. Hot dogs are fully cooked. Otherwise, no.

Yeah i mean there are a lot of butcher shops in america

I feel like the hipsterization of america has brought back the butcher as a cool dude

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:24 (five years ago) link

Oddly enough I am a fan of precooked bacon (esp the trader joe's one). I am super lazy about making food in the morning and like breakfast burritos with hot sauce (and bacon when feeling decadent). Cooking bacon is way too annoying, especially in a house full of vegans/vegetarians.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:27 (five years ago) link

For lunch today I am having cheetos, a 7 layer italian cookie, ice coffee, and a churro flavored protein powder. I need to get the f out of ny.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:33 (five years ago) link

nem nuong is good sausage

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:43 (five years ago) link

I never really liked kielbasa but there's a not dissimilar French sausage called saucisse de Montbéliard and it is really really fantastic when cooked in red wine all day, and I wonder if the same would work with kielbasa.

because I live in a heavily muslim quartier I can't really get good sausage close by (i.e. within half a kilometer) so we uh had hot dogs for dinner tonight. no they are not in any way better than american hot dogs, but they are just fine nonetheless.

here's a Controversial Food Opinion: Pringles are the best mass-market potato chips

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

I agree. I am not a huge fan of potato chips, but I like pringles (and those pickle flavored or balsamic flavored ones).

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link

At a school I was working at this year they had switched to beef sausages because they had some Muslim students, and they were a vast improvement from the cheap bangers they had before, if a bit too salty.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

yeah I can get some Turkish beef sausages but they're not widely popular here. I should say that merguez are easily available in my quartier & we eat them not infrequently but they're more spiced and thus more limited in application.

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 18 October 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

Square sausage, or lorne beef sausage, is one of the only things I get homesick for, with a nice floury bap and liberal brown sauce.

Girl I grew up with Dutch and Swedish ppl, their food is gross. I had kielbasa for the first time in Jersey City!

pringles are vile you weirdos

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 18 October 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

Australia, for all its British, Irish and Italian heritage really can’t do sausages well. Beef sausages are the staple and not good, bacon, is very much lacking and the Italian sausages seem somewhat dry. Maybe Australian pigs aren’t fat enough.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 18 October 2018 19:21 (five years ago) link

Best way to test that is to make your own sausages imo
