Only kidding. Seriously though, I'm helping to cater a party for my mother's 60th birthday. Finger food for fifty. Any thoughts?

Cucumber sandwiches. Good. So far I've also got chicken legs with two types of glaze, salad skewers, two types of tortilla rolls (one with meat, one without). I'm trying to sneak in some vegetarian food, because I find that finger food in this country tends to concentrate on MEAT, and there are some veggies in our family (even if they have to keep it hidden).

I'm also trying to make as much as I can the day before.

Falafel - vegetarian and delicious! Also ickle spicy meatballs for the carnivorous, and both can be served with a nice minty yoghurt dip. Make the day before, warm up in oven.

Summer rolls - matchstick carrots/cukes/radish/bamboo shoots, sprouts, fine bean threads, all wrapped in rice paper and served with peanut sauce. Line the rice paper wrapper with a leaf of red or butter lettuce - looks lovely through the translucent wrapper. Cover with a damp towel then overwrap with saran or foil to keep them moist overnight.

Mushroom caps stuffed with chopped mushroom stems, bread crumbs, herbs, goat cheese. Should be run under the broiler before served, which can be a pain.

I went to a champagne and canapes wedding reception on Friday and the best things were:

- asparagus and dip
- mini yorkshire puddings with horseradish cream and a little piece of perfectly roasted beef
- mini crab tartlets
- mini ice cream cornets (raspberry, lychee or mango)
- fresh fruit kebabs

It was all utterly nummy, but the roast beef was my favourite. The only unfortunate thing was an elderly lady who chased the asparagus waiter around, kept grabbing handfuls at a time, double dipped and even let a drip of dip slip from her lip back onto the plate! Bleurgh.

various bruschettas are veggie-friendly, I made one that was super-simple and got raves...goat cheese mixed with chopped kalamata olives and a bit of oregano. Hummous and pita bread of course, and there is a nice variation that you can make with edamame instead of chickpeas--it's all green and interesting.

Mountain bread slices/chunks always seem to go down well at my parties/dinners. I just slice a big loaf up into thin fingers and serve it up with dips - my fave is an eggplant and garlic dip I get from the supermarket, mmmm.

My wife and I had a party once where I turned 8 lbs. of chicken into chicken satay, and each pan full was inhaled in about two blinks after it came out of the oven. Very gratifying, but a lot of work cutting up and skewering.

Um...goat's cheese crostini, bowls of olives and pickles, if you have enough small glasses something we do at the restaurant is shots of gazpacho, which normally goes down a treat.

If you use pitta bread then you can make big bowls of salad for people to pile into it.
