he storytelling in the single-player was just really inventive and smart and surprising.

very true

xpost - Probably because most (all?) of the maps come out of the single player part, it kind of spoils the single player if you play the multi first, but still - the multi is the meat of the game and the real attraction, yes?

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I didn't really get too into the single player campaign in Call of Duty 4, for whatever reason - it took me like six months to actually finish it, though I was glad I did as it unlocked the arcade mode, which I thought was a lot more fun & wish I'd spent more time with. I guess there's no arcade mode in this one though? Seems like co-op mode replaced it?

yeah, but as i said i really like the stuff they do with single player so i'm going to finish it first. (it's apparently also pretty short)

I'm actually probably going to play the single player first this time too (maybe because I'm a little worried the multi is going to end up feeling too much like just more of the same?). Actually I think I'll probably play and hour or two of the single and then play some multi or something like that. I actually haven't played a single player FPS for quite a while, so I'm looking forward to it.

fm10 = football manager 2010, I spent the vast majority of Monday playing it.

I checked your stats earlier Coz, just before I bottled a bit of free for all and played spec ops instead (the sniper fi level is a hell of a lot of fun) level 8 within the hour? not bad at all.

damnit - it's sitting right here in my bag ready to go home and play - I should just leave work right? I have people trash talkin' me through IM and sms right now and I'm not even home playing - DAMMMMIT. When I got off the bus for work today, there were literally ten guys bee-lining for Hancock center Best Buy right along with me with the intent of grabbing it before work. One guy yelled - 'there's gonna be some killin' tonight' and everyone laughed. Someone just texted me and said there is no 'old school' mode in MP - W...T...F...?

what to say... it's brilliant. it's just as smooth and tight as the first one and the new stuff they've thrown in is both really cool and pretty well balanced. not played on search and destroy yet but will be interesting to see how the heart monitor plays out there... wasn't nuked once in the 3 and half hours I played tonight

Forks - have you ever played a first person shooter, where you walk & sprint around shooting stuff? Well, this plays exactly like that

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

watching some gameplay videos, this seems to be another one-man-army run & gun, despite attempts at realism.

wha - I was (pretty much) being serious. If you've played another FPS, they're all kind of similar. This is a very solid one, with high production values and a fantastic multiplayer suite.

The single player really is just like a light gun game (a shooting gallery) where you control the movement too - there's no puzzles or anything like that - just forward movement and shooting lots and lots of folks. Honestly, if this game was only single player, I wouldn't buy it. The way they design single player really turns me off (after playing an hour or two of it tonight, the hate came flooding back).

But the multi is pretty much just one crazy adrenaline rush. Maybe comparable to a more fully developed version of Countestrike (more modes, weapons and variety & better graphics)? It's like two different games in one (maybe three? I've yet to try coop).

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 06:42 (fourteen years ago) link

the little of the co-op I actually tried was pretty neat

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 06:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I really like what they've done with the custom kill streak rewards (so far). It gives the multiplayer the feeling of a lot more variety, even if they make the matches that much more frustrating at times. I guess eventually we'll learn how to avoid or deal with all this new stuff. It's a lot riskier to use them too, since you're vulnerable longer when you're using some of them, I think? I also really like when matches end showing a sweet final kill.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 07:50 (fourteen years ago) link

totally didn't expect that scene to be so gratuitous. it's set up with maybe two lines of dialogue.

GM, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 08:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Damn. It's been a long time since I beat a game in one sitting. Holy hangover. I think this is some of the best level design I've ever seen in a FPS. Events are really seamlessly integrated, and it's on rails to the extent that you always know where to go and what's happening but only once or twice did I get the "fuck why can't I jump over this fucking privet hedge" feeling. Also all the scenes in America are fucking WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN. Please tell me some of those maps are in MP.

Speaking of MP, did I always suck so bad at it? My five games can be best summed up as

http://www.fersht.com/chess/No8/BlackpawnsandfeltsLR.jpg

The n00b-assisting deathstreak features don't help much, either.
