maybe a little too America Fuck Yeah thus far

having never played any Call of Duty game ever, can you guys explain how these play?

because she looks awesome, like in the face (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Forks - have you ever played a first person shooter, where you walk & sprint around shooting stuff? Well, this plays exactly like that

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

watching some gameplay videos, this seems to be another one-man-army run & gun, despite attempts at realism.

abanana, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 04:02 (fourteen years ago) link

C'mon Jeff, be serious! Actually, I've never played a CoD either.

wha - I was (pretty much) being serious. If you've played another FPS, they're all kind of similar. This is a very solid one, with high production values and a fantastic multiplayer suite.

The single player really is just like a light gun game (a shooting gallery) where you control the movement too - there's no puzzles or anything like that - just forward movement and shooting lots and lots of folks. Honestly, if this game was only single player, I wouldn't buy it. The way they design single player really turns me off (after playing an hour or two of it tonight, the hate came flooding back).

But the multi is pretty much just one crazy adrenaline rush. Maybe comparable to a more fully developed version of Countestrike (more modes, weapons and variety & better graphics)? It's like two different games in one (maybe three? I've yet to try coop).

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 06:42 (fourteen years ago) link

the little of the co-op I actually tried was pretty neat

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 06:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I really like what they've done with the custom kill streak rewards (so far). It gives the multiplayer the feeling of a lot more variety, even if they make the matches that much more frustrating at times. I guess eventually we'll learn how to avoid or deal with all this new stuff. It's a lot riskier to use them too, since you're vulnerable longer when you're using some of them, I think? I also really like when matches end showing a sweet final kill.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 07:50 (fourteen years ago) link

totally didn't expect that scene to be so gratuitous. it's set up with maybe two lines of dialogue.

GM, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 08:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Damn. It's been a long time since I beat a game in one sitting. Holy hangover. I think this is some of the best level design I've ever seen in a FPS. Events are really seamlessly integrated, and it's on rails to the extent that you always know where to go and what's happening but only once or twice did I get the "fuck why can't I jump over this fucking privet hedge" feeling. Also all the scenes in America are fucking WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN. Please tell me some of those maps are in MP.

Speaking of MP, did I always suck so bad at it? My five games can be best summed up as

http://www.fersht.com/chess/No8/BlackpawnsandfeltsLR.jpg

The n00b-assisting deathstreak features don't help much, either.

antexit - five multiplayer games isn't enough. You need to unlock some better perks and guns and you'll be able to do better. Game starts out pretty harsh if you're matched up with people who have considerably better stuff than you.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I just got to the Red Dawn part, so hopefully the single player will get better from here on out, maybe? I really hated the Favela level, as it did the typical Call of Duty thing I hate the most, where they just scatter an insane amount of enemies throughout the level to slow down your progress and to kill you over an over again in the same two feet, before you can move that extra foot forward to get to the next checkpoint. I guess you feel like you accomplish something when you get past the sections like that, but I just find them no fun to play.

It also kind of bummed me out in the snow level, when they introduce that great stealth-like mechanic and then only let you use it for a minute or so. Would have been happy doing that much longer! Also why introduce a climbing mechanic, then do nothing significant with it?

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Picking up Intel is a hoot, huh? Working laptops in blizzard, subzero conditions - some days I want to live in COD world.

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno to me it's fun to figure out tactically how to advance in those sections—who you need to take out first and how etc etc

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

"Wasteland" multiplayer map is recycled from CoD... 2? It's kind of shameful that I know this.

some trustifarian junkie moron (dan m), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

xp Slocki

yeah, I love that! Especially now that you can actually clear a path tactically, rather than being forced into constant forward movement by respawning enemies.

One of the baddie skins in the favela level looks disturbingly young, did anyone else notice this?

xp Jeff, yeah I know. I'm L4 now, and not likely to improve until I figure out why my wireless router isn't working :( :( :(. But I don't see why I lose out 65% of the time when I clearly have the drop on a guy. The R1 L1 mechanic is just a way to spice up what's practically a cutscene, I'd think (it crops up again in a different context). It'd be functionally useless in something like MP, anyway.

antexit, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 18:01 (fourteen years ago) link

bottled out of joining a free for all deathmatch again this afternoon. Need to rip the plaster off and go out there and get shot to bits. The thought of sucking so badly at online play is just so dispriting though. What with being insanely competetive and all.

same here. I couldnt get a good kill streak to save my life in the first iteration, how could I stand a chance with these new and improved kill streaks?

btw the story in this game is kind of retardo

*** SPOILER ***

russia invades the US because they find an american body at an airport massacre? wtf... the first one wasnt like a BRILLIANT story but i thought it was done pretty well... this is just stupid

watch yo back haxors

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) this week booted as many as 1 million players from its Xbox Live gaming service due to the company's belief that they modified their consoles to play games illegally downloaded from file sharing sites.

"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty, and result in a ban from Xbox Live," Microsoft said in a statement.

The move comes amid this week's release of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2", the mostly highly anticipated Xbox 360 game of the year.

just grind out some levels until you unlock good guns and perks... you can all draft behind my leet skillzors if you want?

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 20:25 (fourteen years ago) link

my two lame tipz for improving in fps:

get used to much higher control sensitivity that default. bump it up in stages if you need to.

crank up brightness and contrast on your tv and/or you xbox vid output. or get a bigger tv. u need to see.

other than that, don't listen to me, i'm crap. the basic unit of play is the "duel" where u and another asshole have locked with each other and are firing. all other things being equal, if you can win those, you'll do fine, and i never do :/

goole, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 20:34 (fourteen years ago) link

key to being good at cod is taking note of any incoming UAVs and helis, noting who has died when they die, and keeping track of who is alive on your team and the other via the scoreboard... listen, too, for footsteps and claymores and other shit

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 21:01 (fourteen years ago) link

anyone around tonight for some MP?

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 21:04 (fourteen years ago) link

xps. Contrary to that I would suggest lower sensitivities are better. Much more accurate at distance. Obviously it means you turn slower but that isn't such an issue if you look in the right directions while moving to minimise the chance of being blindsided.

Pedro Paramore (jim), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link

u may be onto something

goole, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

rethinking it it might not be so applicable on the console as it is on the PC. On the PC you can have a crazy low sensitivity and still turn round quickly with some frantic mouse activity. Not so possible on your 360 pad obviously when you're stuck at the same speed.

Pedro Paramore (jim), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link

SPOILER

Slocki, isn't the implication that the American government was directly responsible for the massacre? The one body found of the terrorists was an army guy. At the very least it would seem like the American was an agent provocateur. But yes there's a lot of dumb/incomprehensible stuff in this plot.

I need someone on PS3 from whom I can draft behind his l33t skillzors.

I'm slightly tempted to quit as somehow I have 420 kills and 420 deaths for a perfect 1.0 k/d ratio, but the game is too much fun
