A years-long mystery revealed! Would never have gotten that in a million ages. Kind of amazing how different the title screen and in-game graphics are...I know that's not so uncommon in games but it really feels severe here.

I agree, I was shocked to see the difference

Ding ding ding! That is correct.
It's something I only ever had as one of those early CD-ROMs that promised hundreds of 'games' on one disk. Serious first-generation CD-ROM stuff - we had to put the CDs in a special caddy that you then inserted into the drive. Most of this experience involved loading and then quickly rejecting terrible-looking or just baffling CGA games without instructions or clear objectives, so this was probably one of the top-tier games on the disk, to be honest.

Wow, Zeilard! I remember always seeing that box at Egghead (or Games N Gadgets or Software Etc. or CompUSA or whatever other sad, defunct chain of the olden days) with its swarthy sword-swinging warrior looking every bit like a game I would be into, and then the screens of the game itself looked like an ugly, cramped, pixellated drag. Maybe not though? Looks kinda Zelda II-esque, looking at it now...

big ups forks! Base Wars is one of my favorite games ever, probably because i hate baseball, and i'm still waiting for the hd remake.
― precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 19:56 (eleven years ago) link
one of my big strategies was to upgrade the pitcher as much as possible, then bean/walk the batters, running down their hp and eventually blowing them up until the other team has to forfeit because they don't have enough players.

i played it back when i was renting games in rounds of three for the nes from a local drugstore that had four utterly chaotic shelves of games to choose from

<3 all y'all
I loved the chaotic-shelf video game rental experience, especially given that the huge number of NES titles meant that going with your friend to the place their Mom usually took them meant an entirely new, weird selection of games. No rhyme or reason - seemingly high-profile things would be quite scarce. I remember the only time I played TMNT: Manhattan Project, it was rented from a Stein-Mart at a mall I never otherwise frequented.
