The fuck? Celestrial is not even a word, why would autocorrect correct to that?

okeydokey, i have enough b-side hearts to go for the core. i'm gonna give it a try now if you want to watch me die hundreds of times

Cleared 3B! Tried to log a full clear of chapter 1 but I missed a strawberry somewhere.

3B is the woooooist

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 February 2018 19:48 (six years ago) link

phew, the core was hard but not impossible. a little bit over an hour, and only 367 deaths! i've seen worse

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 February 2018 20:40 (six years ago) link

watching that was v stressful btw

gbx, Sunday, 11 February 2018 22:50 (six years ago) link

I am nowhere near where some of you are at, in skill or achievement, but one of the many things I increasingly like about this game is how it pretty much encourages you to die again and again, directing you in the end to try (sometimes in desperation) to do the craziest, blind jump off a cliff thing, even though you've half suspected from the start that that's exactly what you were supposed to do in the first place.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 12 February 2018 03:12 (six years ago) link

one of the many qualities it shares with SMB3 is that you end up exploring every reachable bit of every screen, partly to look for secrets but also just to kind of check it out. it's a pleasant feeling.

Karl Malone, Monday, 12 February 2018 03:16 (six years ago) link

This game keeps crashing my ancient PS4. :( Still fun tho

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 12 February 2018 18:19 (six years ago) link

Not exactly struggling but still a little annoyed by what must be the home stretch of chapter 2, getting chased by all the shadow versions of me. I know I can beat it, it just doesn't give you much time to think, and (no joke) I think I now have a blister forming on my left thumb.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 12 February 2018 21:34 (six years ago) link

yep, you're close! the shadows are terrifying at first, but they get a lot easier after several million deaths learning a reliable path through each screen that doesn't ever double-back on itself, if that makes sense

Karl Malone, Monday, 12 February 2018 21:39 (six years ago) link

i have 2 b-sides left, i think. i might tackle one of them in just a bit *gulp*

Karl Malone, Monday, 12 February 2018 21:41 (six years ago) link

Huh, OK, that wasn't that bad. But here's the thing: I just completed chapter 2 with 2/3rds fewer deaths than chapter 1 and I took an hour less to do it. Was it easier or ... am I getting better?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 12 February 2018 22:32 (six years ago) link

probably the latter, i certainly did. the rest of the chapters are longer though so don't expect a downward curve

ciderpress, Monday, 12 February 2018 22:49 (six years ago) link

jfc the 5th screen of the ch 6 b-side is INSANE

Karl Malone, Monday, 12 February 2018 22:51 (six years ago) link

or at least i was insanely bad at it

Karl Malone, Monday, 12 February 2018 22:51 (six years ago) link

I was curious so I watched some youtube clip of some dude doing that chapter, and man ... that's all so crazy.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 12 February 2018 23:15 (six years ago) link

yeah, i just took a breather/gave up a minute ago. i got to the 6th or 7th screen in and my thumb was throbbing with pain. i'll try it again in a few days!

Karl Malone, Monday, 12 February 2018 23:17 (six years ago) link

Was thinking how much more maddening this game would be with a time limit per screen.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link

i got through the hotel whew

How do those dudes get those super-long dashes?

Also, after all this time I still can't tell: can you bounce off the spikes?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 20:50 (six years ago) link

i had the same revelation. I think you can bounce off the edge of a spiked platform?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 20:54 (six years ago) link

you can grab that edge, so yeah: you can prob leap off it too. gotta be pretty exact of course.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 20:56 (six years ago) link

the super-long dashes (and other moves) are explained in this video, sort of

i still don't know the exact deal with the spikes. i think it's just using a dash *just* before hitting the spikes, combined with using one of the advanced jumping moves that seems to recharge your dash at the same time that jump (giving you an extra dash, in effect)

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 20:56 (six years ago) link

I saw that advanced movement tutorial and it might as well be in a different language talking about a different game. I just can't follow it because he speeds ahead so quickly and is constantly moving around instead of just patiently demonstrating what he is doing and what that does.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 21:13 (six years ago) link

the spikes only kill you if you;'re moving in their direction. if you move orthogonal to them you can touch them and possibly wall jump off them. that's my understanding at least

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 February 2018 03:04 (six years ago) link

I wanted to become an orthogonalist in college but i ended up moving into liberal arts

this game is otherwise p ok but games with hundreds of lines of dialogue explaining things that could have been done in dumbshow are dud dud dud

Eh, I've liked that stuff so far. Just stuff you bump into to keep you company and break up the stress.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 February 2018 13:28 (six years ago) link

I do agree that games rely a little too much on the " ... " dialogue.

the ch 6 b-side is insanely difficult, for me at least

i remember the corned beef of my childhood (Karl Malone), Sunday, 18 February 2018 19:04 (six years ago) link

kinda obvious idea here but after listening to the terrible ch 6 b-side music for 45 minutes, i finally realized that i could just turn it off and leave the other SFX on. huge improvement, at least for that chapter

i remember the corned beef of my childhood (Karl Malone), Sunday, 18 February 2018 19:19 (six years ago) link

i'm on that one too! getting through it at an ok pace i guess compared to b-3 which was still the most frustrating part of the game for me, but yeah some rooms seem pretty ridiculous until you work out all the microtimings within these mostly huge open spaces. the music is nice! it def sounds different from the rest of the soundtrack and most of the remixes, but it's sweet, kind of reminiscent of some sonic cd music + there's a synth burbling part which pops up that sounds like this mahavishnu song which i mentioned i liked just the other day

soundtrack to this game is absolutely amazing on the whole, though. prob my fav game soundtrack since fez.

i'm almost through all the b-sides, on chap 8 now. was def struggling on a lot of them but going through the chap 7 summit b-side tightened me up noticably, it's a super fun level because so much of it seems rough or impossible at first but by the end you're just 2x-dashing elegantly through all these complex spaces. l can't believe i was able to execute all this:

#NintendoSwitch pic.twitter.com/pFXmu1s2nH

— kjsdfhglasbfjd (@kjsdfhglasbfjd1) February 22, 2018

but it didn't even take that long, maybe 20-25 minutes to figure all that out and execute it. not that it wasn't v difficult but the level and the whole game up until that point leads you into it so gradually that you can incorporate the new things it's asking you to do into what you're already doing naturally enough.

really love this game! beautiful design, super fun to play. one of my favs ever.

sleepingbag, Thursday, 22 February 2018 08:59 (six years ago) link

I am no hardcore gamer. I am barely a gamer. So Celeste has been a real struggle - mostly fun, but still frustrating. I get stuck on a level (screen) that takes me 30 minutes, finally make a breakthrough, and then get to the next screen which is just as challenging. That's ok, in that it's rewarding to finally get through something, but today it sort of gave me a headache and every time I saw a strawberry I basically though, fuck you, strawberry, I have enough on my plate.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 February 2018 22:16 (six years ago) link

yeah, it's definitely a kind of advanced game. i'm literally resting a few days to let my thumb heal!
