If an N64 Mini cost $79 and only had Paper Mario on it I’d get it.

banjo-kazooie is the only n64 rare game that holds up imo, unless im forgetting one

apparently Switch hacking is (a) extremely possible and (b) extremely unpatchable

You are forgetting Goldeneye!
― DJI, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:13 (six years ago) link
Although maybe it doesn't hold up against the FPS of today.
― DJI, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link
goldeneye was legendary in its time but its hard to play today imo
― ciderpress, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:20 (six years ago) link
keep in mind nintendo has previously been able to permanently block hacked 3DSes from their online services, so there's some risk there w/ hacking switch
― ciderpress, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:23 (six years ago) link
Goldeneye is amazing, today too
Diddy Kong Racing has a fucklot of "uh oh!!! I'm Banjo!!" bullshit and I can only play it wearing blue blockers
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link
The main issue with N64 in 2018 is that it looks horrendous on HDMI without mods, lag is also an issue
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link
yeah i think a N64 mini is a lot less likely, the emulation still isn't a perfect science for that one. i can't play iggy's reckin balls on emulator.

SMASH 2018

new single player Splatoon, so stoked!
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 8 March 2018 22:36 (six years ago) link
xp splatoon is an excellent online team shooter imo. online is currently free until they launch their full online service later this year after which it'll be like $20/year or so?
― ciderpress, Thursday, 8 March 2018 22:37 (six years ago) link
What can you tell me about these? Don't know the former, and the latter looks like ... a kid game? I just played a bit of the Kirby demo with my daughter and - seemed kind of button mashing simple and chaotic, if cute. Almost made me want to cancel my pre-order.
But Smash, I'm excited about that. And Little Nightmares, whatever that is, looks spooky and cool.

never played captain toad but i've been intrigued, it looks almost like a nintendoized monument valley? happy to hear they're porting it over
― sleepingbag, Thursday, 8 March 2018 23:47 (six years ago) link
Captain Toad is a lot of fun if you like puzzle games, the main part of the game is moving the diorama around in 3D to plot out a course, with all the usual Nintendo polish in level design. The original was priced as a budget title and was quite short, about 10-12 hours iirc, but there were harder challenges built into the stages so would take a lot longer to fully complete. Happy to see its getting a new lease of life but won’t pick it up again until it is super cheap.

Yeah hype as hell that that’s this year

I’ve never played SSB - what’s the appeal. I just realised I’ve been confusing it all these years with the Amiga game Smash TV.
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 March 2018 01:28 (six years ago) link
Oops I mean what’s the appeal? [question mark]

Oops I mean what’s the appeal? {question mark}
Ack.
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 March 2018 01:32 (six years ago) link
It's hella fun is the appeal! It's the typical easy-to-grasp, hard-to-master Nintendo game, with all of your favorite characters from various Nintendo and 3P franchises...
― DJI, Friday, 9 March 2018 01:33 (six years ago) link
it's the nintendo cast fighting game, is the appeal. it's got unique mechanics from other fighting games though, you're trying to knock people off of a platforming stage rather than KO people.
― ciderpress, Friday, 9 March 2018 01:37 (six years ago) link
that teaser was clever, the start is the original reveal trailer for splatoon until the lights go out...
― ciderpress, Friday, 9 March 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link
Smash Brothers is the best. The extended cast of Nintendo plus guest stars, beating the crap out of each other in very creative ways.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 9 March 2018 01:45 (six years ago) link
its very easy to play. most fighting games have a million combinations and three different punch/kick buttons each. you only need a button or two. you could make an Atari 7800 port of this with the original joystick, is how well the controls are designed.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 9 March 2018 02:09 (six years ago) link
the all-star lineup is a really big part. it is rad to see Pikachu or Princess Peach or Pac-Man or Megaman or dozens of other hugely popular and well-rendered characters all throw down, all together on the same screen. im definitely getting Smash.
excited for Dark Souls! it looks like a straight port of the original game but that is even better cos the original game was perfect and if they had gone in with new lighting or whatever it for real would change the experience. im looking forward to the portability, the online functionality. and the Solaire amiibo.

Interesting side note to the Undertale reveal is that it was also announced that games made in the GameMaker engine will be able to be ported to Switch from the summer onwards, so we should see stuff like Hyper Light Drifter, Va 11 Hall A, Hotline Miami, Nuclear Throne, Spelunky, Downwell etc soon
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 9 March 2018 03:35 (six years ago) link
i think i spent every day in the summers of 2003 to 2006 playing smashee with my friends, its so fun
― nxd, Friday, 9 March 2018 09:47 (six years ago) link
Yeah, it wasn't until I saw on Twitter that GameMaker Studio 2 was getting Switch support that I realised that was subtly implied by Undertale coming. If I remember correctly, though, the guys at Heart Machine (Hyper Light Drifter) have previously said there's some blocking factors for moving HLD to Game Maker Studio 2, so I wouldn't get too excited about that one, but I would love it - and buy it for the fourth time (backed it for 2 copies on Kickstarter, hoping for that PS Vita love, then bought the physical PS4 copy) - if that did happen.
― CraigG, Friday, 9 March 2018 11:26 (six years ago) link
HLD would be nice but give me Nuclear Throne first
― The Troops™ (jamescobo), Friday, 9 March 2018 18:32 (six years ago) link
Super Smash Bros is also the mainstream heir to Street Fighter, and probably the most popular competitive fighting game community

Ready to pull the trigger on Splatoon 2. But.... can I not play it with somebody else locally?
― rb (soda), Friday, 9 March 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link
there's no local multiplayer, it's not that kinda game. you can play it locally LAN party style if everyone has a switch but otherwise it's just online multiplayer
― ciderpress, Friday, 9 March 2018 19:24 (six years ago) link
it's honestly not a great handheld game either in multiplayer since it's so fast paced and you have to track movement well as it's a shooter. it's much more of a Competitive Gaming Experience than anything else Nintendo makes
― ciderpress, Friday, 9 March 2018 19:27 (six years ago) link
Wonder how long til the Switch really hits the “buy one for every kid” price point the Game Boy and DS lines always eventually reached. Might be a while considering the launch model is probably going to keep doing well through this holiday season and Nintendo just announced new 3DS games yesterday, one out to 2019.
― valorous wokelord (silby), Friday, 9 March 2018 20:17 (six years ago) link
thinking about getting splatoon 2 too, I think. didn't realise it had a half decent single player too
― ||||||||, Friday, 9 March 2018 20:18 (six years ago) link
More single player coming to Splat2n as DLC later this year, tooI still don’t think I can play Splatoon without throwing up but I’m SO JEALOUS OF THE OUTFITS MY GOD
― valorous wokelord (silby), Friday, 9 March 2018 20:19 (six years ago) link
Splatoon 2 also has a really fun horde mode where you work with 3 other players collecting salmon eggs for a shady company. It’s the part of the game that I keep coming back to.
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 9 March 2018 22:13 (six years ago) link
yeah that falls under multiplayer still but its co-op multiplayer which is a p different (yet still much more intense than single player) experience
― ciderpress, Friday, 9 March 2018 22:15 (six years ago) link
personally i dont like it but its super popular so i think i'm just a grump about co-op modes in general
