Anyway I have been playing Hyrule Warriors and I got to admit there’s some fun challenge in the time management and running all over the battlefield to rescue your dipshit captains and I’m not really an action game person so even pulling off the “hit B five times” combos is pleasant.

kinda in a holding pattern right now (really only toad and tennis on the horizon and they're both hardly system shifters.)
holding out for a solid E3 (metroid? next zelda tease? pikmin? a.n.other?) but don't underestimate the propensity of nintendo for fucking it completely
third parties will come on stream into Q1 2019 I'd expect, now they've seen that the system is doing numbers

It's not just brand new titles is the thing! Take Doom, for example. The game is a year and a half old, and it is currently available for Playstation and Xbox for less than half the cost of the Switch version, while the intentionally downgraded Switch version (which I am still enjoying) is riddled with slowdowns and stuff. Or, yeah, Dark Souls, which is 7 years old. Or Hollow Knight, a year old, or lots of other games that are trickling down to the Switch that have been on every platform from Xbox to iPad (which is the case with many of the indies, many of which for that matter are just retro 8-bit wonders).
Don't get me wrong, I'm getting my money's worth with stuff I have, and I still haven't started Mario Odyssey or Zelda (!). But I stand by my assessment that calendar year 2018 has been pretty lame, and there are as yet no heavy hitter confirmed release dates to look forward to. I guess Wolfenstein, assuming no delays and that it actually works on release?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link
"intentionally downgraded". the switch must have half the power of the PS4 no?
I agree 2018 has been a total wash out so far (barring what? celeste? which is multiplatform anyway)
I still haven't started Mario Odyssey or Zelda (!)
get these played you absolute mad man
― ||||||||, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link
Ha it is pretty silly to be disappointed with the switch if you haven't touched the 2 best games ever (not just best on switch). I do agree I want more big games on that calendar though.
― Evan, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link
yeah third party support will happen with time. game dev cycles are much longer than the year and change the console has been out, and wii u being a big flop meant that all the third parties were taking a wait and see approach and have to play catch up now.
― ciderpress, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:36 (six years ago) link
and in the meantime, we get to enjoy ports of 5 year old games at full price 😶
― ||||||||, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:37 (six years ago) link
octopath traveler is a pretty substantial 3rd party exclusive on the way, as was Mario & rabbids. it's not like there's zero support. E3 is in a few weeks.
― ciderpress, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link
$60 is a pretty fair price for a lot of video games, imo. The “I can’t believe I’m paying full price for a late port” thing just doesn’t make sense to me.Anyway go play Zelda Josh what the hell are you waiting for

in unrelated news there's a demo of sushi striker up on the eshop today, been hearing good things about it
― ciderpress, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:47 (six years ago) link
My daughter is playing it right now, and I'm in the middle of a couple of other things. But titles like Mario and Zelda, they are totally familiar to me. I mean, I love them, but I get it even before I start playing them. Honestly, Nintendo exclusive titles like that are why I have a Nintendo. However, stuff like Doom, that was totally novel to me. I've never played a game like that before. And when all these other games like God of War or whatever come out for other platforms, I watch a few clips and think, boy, they look really cool! Speaking of power, why is Nintendo obsessed with releasing underpowered consoles?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:49 (six years ago) link
xpost
$60 may indeed be a fair price for a title. But when it is $60 only on the Switch, and $20 everywhere else, that's sort of bullshit. I appreciate the fact that the Dark Souls remaster, whenever it comes out for Switch, is priced the same across the consoles.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link
uh you don't know this Zelda though
best game ever seriously
― droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:52 (six years ago) link
They make more money releasing “underpowered” consoles. They tried releasing a console with competitive processing power with the GameCube, and it was not a smashing success. They have not tried to compete on specs ever since. The AAA console experience is on PlayStation and Xbox now and that’s where it’s likely to stay. Nintendo doesn’t need those customers to be successful.
― valorous wokelord (silby), Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:56 (six years ago) link
yeah I've played almost all the zeldas, but this one is unlike any other
― ||||||||, Thursday, 24 May 2018 19:04 (six years ago) link
the switch isn't underpowered for a console that can run off a battery, it's actually quite impressive. i think people will be surprised at the quality of graphics it can push once devs have had more time with it. im expecting metroid prime 4 to get some 'wait, the switch can do that?' reactions when we finally see it.
― ciderpress, Thursday, 24 May 2018 19:07 (six years ago) link
oh yeah, I forgot octopath. I'll play that
― ||||||||, Thursday, 24 May 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link
Honestly, another reason I didn't start Zelda is because I was expecting to start Dark Souls. But I guess with Dark Souls off the table for who knows how long, maybe it's time for Zelda.

I am very late to rocket league, but I don't know if I'll ever get tired of it. I might throw my switch against a wall, though.
― Tapes 'n Tapes of Osho (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 May 2018 21:48 (six years ago) link
I bought my Switch about five months ago, have pretty much only played Zelda the entire time, and am very, very happy.
I got Odyssey in February, played it a couple times, it's nice, but Zelda keeps wanting to be played, and I'm still loving it.
― Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 24 May 2018 21:54 (six years ago) link
Another reason I haven't played Mario or Zelda yet is that I know they are awesome, but right now, if I played them, I've got nothing waiting in the wings ...
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 May 2018 23:01 (six years ago) link

it's fucking amazing and I know of nothing of ps4 that compares

Josh I don't think you realize how much time both of those games can take... doesn't matter much what's waiting in the wings when you're living in the Zelda universe or collecting endless moons.

pretty low, the 3DS one was a pet project of sakurai, the smash guy, who presumably has been busy with new smash for the past while

If your other concern is that there's not enough Switch games to play, maybe spend 6-8 months playing Zelda, then there'll be new games out?
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 25 May 2018 09:36 (six years ago) link
This thread is basically the Infinity War of people trying to convince Josh that maybe Nintendo is a company that knows what it's doing.
― Andrew Farrell, Friday, 25 May 2018 10:00 (six years ago) link
sushi striker demo is worth checking out if you like this sort of color matching puzzle game. it's quite different from a match-3 game mechanically and the production values are high for the genre - fully voiced Saturday morning cartoon style cutscenes and the like. very cute/funny. it's definitely a touchscreen game though, the joycon controls feel like an afterthought/handicap.
― ciderpress, Friday, 25 May 2018 12:13 (six years ago) link
Because I am familiar with the worlds of Mario and Zelda (even if I haven't played these specific games) I'm not quite ready to spend months on them. I wanted something different ... like Dark Souls, dammit! But Doom is pretty different, that'll keep me going, especially because I'm slow. (Though the slowdowns in that game, even post patch, are maddening and, at times, game-breaking.)
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 May 2018 12:45 (six years ago) link
yeah I played the Sushi Striker demo last night too. Agree that it is better on the touchscreen. The anime is real delightful though and I'm glad they brought it onto the Switch (it was first announced as a 3DS title, now it'll be both). Not sure if I'll pick it up, but it does make all kinds of real great puzzle game sounds.

Nintendo actually ran an eShop sale on ARMS earlier this year so they might someday again put a first party retail title on discount.
