I guess I'm wrong for thinking Pokemon is for grade schoolers? To paraphrase someone else, I'm old enough to have missed out on Pokemon twice. The only people I've seen playing it have been young kids.

Josh I think you might suck at Nintendo
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:36 (six years ago) link
I think you might be right! I mean, I'm 43 and was there at the start, but missed many of the subsequent iterations and iconic games I guess.

Pokémon is for kids and former kids

I mean I ain’t remotely excited for any Pokémon whatever neither but I know better than to go on the Internet and say “what’s the big deal?” about it. And I wear chuck taylors every day and I still only vaguely understand why people care about the westdashians

I've been slowly playing Doom, which has been extra slow due to, well, game slowdowns. I'll go to jump over a pit or something and just before I press the jump button the frame rates shrink to molasses and it leaves me plummeting to my death.

Fair enough! Honest confession, I was looking around at PS4s enough that I'm starting to get it in targeted pop-up ads.

there's always some amount of grass is greener thing with gaming platforms. until you have a substantive list of specific games you want to play on a console it's always better to just be patient and see what happens
― ciderpress, Thursday, 31 May 2018 23:40 (six years ago) link
just curious what is your reason for not playing Mario/Zelda? they are both amazing. any time spent fretting over games you could be playing is utterly wasted if you own these and don't give them a shot.

why not just get a second console? if it's a financial thing i understand but it sounds more like an... ideological thing? but the switch is really its own thing. and w/ all the exclusives and stuff i don't even look askance at my friend who has a ps4, switch and xbone.
― Mordy, Friday, 1 June 2018 00:17 (six years ago) link
Josh, I’ve actually read your posts here, and I think you need to just stop fixating on particular titles you’ve read about and just try some shit. ciderpress in particular has noted several games throughout the life of this console that might be fun for you. You’re either stuck on big tickets you will or won’t play or complaining about specific indies that got delayed. Try Wizard of Legend or some shit. If you really want a box with a steady stream of pre-orderable AAA 3D studio fare then, uh, yeah, wrong thread, manI’m pissed about not being able to play Crashlands and Terraria on my TV, imho

part of playing videogames is buying crappy videogames and getting sorta ripped off but also being the one person you know who has played the crappy game

(and occasionally landing on amazing stuff and being sad that no one else has played it)
And buying a Nintendo console and not being that into the new Zelda OR the new Mario is finebut the AND NOT statement in your argument does strongly suggest that you might just want to eBay yourself back to the beginning of this particular logic 101 assignment

I would totally get something like a PS4 if I had the time to seriously dedicate myself to playing, but as an old person with a family, it's kind of catch as catch can on the, yeah, time and patience front. So in that sense one reason I picked the Switch, ironically, is its built in limitations.
I mean, it's all good, I like the Switch. The reason I got it is for the usual Nintendo exclusives, like Mario and Zelda, which I am excited to play because I know they are so good. At the same time, I don't want to start playing them until I know there are other games, exclusive or not, I'm excited about on the way. I know that is as much or more my problem than Nintendo's, and the approach of Smash does mitigate the problem. But another reason I bought the Switch was the promise of cool non-Nintendo titles I'd heard of but never played. And a lot of those games are coming, supposedly, just not really on the schedule just yet and with updates few and far between. It gives me a bit of console anxiety, tbh, because Nintendo fucked up so much with the Wii-U that people were ready to write off the company entirely. I just want a few more titles to anchor it down and better ensure its longevity.
There are however tons of cool indies, and I've bought some of them - Steamworld Dig 2 is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played - but too many of them are in the retro 8-bit mode, however well designed, whether "Celeste" (which is impeccable if unforgiving) or "Shovel Knight" (which was also tons of fun, with tons of content, but nothing I wanted to immediately return to once I finished).
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 June 2018 04:16 (six years ago) link
Try Wizard of Legend or some shit.
Looks cool!
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 June 2018 04:22 (six years ago) link
Celeste employs pixel art but is not “retro”

I mean if you're feeling anxious about the fact that you're not sure whether you've done the right thing in buying a nintendo console for non-nintendo AAA titles then we can settle that for you easily - you haven't.
But it doesn't matter! Because you've got great nintendo games you can play on it! And tons of interesting indies! If those other titles are that important to you then yep, buy a second machine. If they're not, forget about them.
But if the issue is just that you feel aggrieved that nintendo marketing + optimistic community hype said that they'd be coming, and they aren't, well er that's happened with pretty much every nintendo console since N64 so <shrug>.
― JimD, Friday, 1 June 2018 10:01 (six years ago) link
(and btw the issue people had with Wii U wasn't lack of third party AAA because that's a given - it was a lack of first party releases).
― JimD, Friday, 1 June 2018 10:02 (six years ago) link
if that leak tweet is accurate..... that would be worrying

What can you guys tell me about:
West of LoathingDon't StarveLittle Nightmares
All seem intriguing.
Also, "Celeste" is brilliant in the way it synthesizes all sorts of classic modes and gameplay, which I think makes it "retro" but not at all a retread, which is rare. There was a great video I saw about how sneakily smart "Shovel Knight" is, the way it presents itself as an old school classic but subtly tweaks gameplay and design to make it more interesting/better. Maybe it's this?

west of loathing is a successor to a web browser based comedy-rpg called kingdom of loathing that I played way back in high school. feels like something I don't want to revisit because I'd just be embarrassed that I ever enjoyed its style of humor but it's probably not bad
