However according to most Paper Mario fans it seems there hasn’t been a good entry since the GameCube one.

That's what I've been hearing as well. Still if this gets enough positive notice I'll give it a try. Hearing more mixed reactions though
― Nhex, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:48 (three years ago) link
tbh i haven't played one since the N64
― trapped out the barndo (crüt), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:53 (three years ago) link
The GameCube entry was great, if you have a means to play it
― Nhex, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:55 (three years ago) link
the first two paper mario games are proper JRPGs with levels, itemization, party members, etc, then they decided to step down all the RPG elements and turn them into adventure games, with mixed results. this is the fourth one of the latter type and it sounds like it might be the best but it's still not gonna satisfy people who want the full-on RPG stuff

Anyone pick up "Carrion?" Game looks pretty cool, and probably ideal for Switch (which isn't getting much use from me these days, tbh).
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 27 July 2020 16:48 (three years ago) link
my Switch is now a dedicated Tetris 99 device
― lukas, Monday, 27 July 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link
Carrion looks super dope. Will get around to buying it someday
― Nhex, Monday, 27 July 2020 18:32 (three years ago) link
carrion looks a bit like Shadow Complex, which I loved
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 27 July 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link
Yeah Carrion's on my "wait for a sale" list
― cwkiii, Saturday, 1 August 2020 15:20 (three years ago) link
just played a little carrion and it seems pretty fun. moving around feels good and the the sound design is gross. chewing up dudes is satisfying but hopefully it's only a couple hours long as idk if i want to do like 10 hours of it.
also loaded up panzer paladin, also fun with terrific visuals and music.

I never played this before, either, but ... $60 for an 8-year old Wii-U game? That until this announcement was apparently priced at $20 on the Wii-U shop? I can't pretend to understand Nintendo, but I think it's kinda sad that there are handful of brand new titles I want to get for my end of life PS4, two of them PS4 exclusives, but it's been months since there's been a first party title I wanted to get for my Switch and nothing concrete to look forward to, either, beyond the long teased promise of Metroid 4 and a BotW sequel.
Fun fact: while my kids never want to play Smash Bros., when we did they would often make me play as the Pikmin guy as a sort of handicap.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link
the price of street fighter 2 turbo was $69.99 (or $79.99?) in mid-90s dollars
― The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:10 (three years ago) link
At least Nintendo has been consistent, then. Maybe Pikmin 3 is underpriced. Do I hear $80? $100?
Seriously, though, if a game like Red Dead Redemption 2, which was reportedly made for between $80 and $100 million, can be sold for $30 (even if on sale) two years after release, then Nintendo can do better than $60 for a spiffed-up port of an 8-year old game. For that matter, it's not like Nintendo titles get much in the way of sales or discounts, either. But hey, I'm not going to buy it, so no worries, Nintendo. You do you.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:20 (three years ago) link
earthbound was like $80 in 1995 yeah. part of why it flopped. the $60 standard didnt really get established until the late 90s
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:24 (three years ago) link
Anyway, it's really not a matter of what things cost 20 years ago, isn't a better comparison what competitors charge today?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:27 (three years ago) link
who are the competitors for pikmin?
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:29 (three years ago) link
not that i think everyone should drive a forklift of money to nintendo all time time but they don't really have true competitors which is why they can and do price like that
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link
I mean, their competitors would be I guess other video game manufacturers? But others have pointed out that the big three offer such distinct experiences at this point that they are functionally different things, so yeah.Certainly Nintendo can charge whatever they want for the properties they own. They know their market. I just don't think it's a terribly good defense of high prices to say, boy, they would have been even higher a couple of decades ago!
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:34 (three years ago) link
i am the competitor of pikmin

― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:40 (three years ago) link
prices for video games have gone down, while inflation for other consumer goods has gone up. this is a competitive advantage for consumers in the video game sector. fear me pikmin 3!
― The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:41 (three years ago) link
I agree that it totally sucks that Nintendo products refuse to go down at the same rate as the games for every other system... but what can you do? There's always someone out there who's going to buy Mario Kart or Tropical Freeze or whatever Kirby title got shoveled out this year at full price. That, or Nintendo somehow still has the power to lock retailer prices.
Think also that the fact that virtually every Sony or MS title now eventually gets ported to PC where the prices race to zero probably is a factor. But lol, yeah, I'm sure even Last of Us II will hit $25 by November, and that was definitely worth full price.
― Nhex, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:56 (three years ago) link
It's something of a compensation that Nintendo titles also seem to hold their resell value insanely well. Some used games are going for £5 less than new on eBay. Another reason not to buy downloads, that

would Breath of the Wild be good on a Switch Lite or does it really need the full Switch/controllers setup?
― solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 01:23 (three years ago) link
I've only played it on a Switch Lite so I dunno what I'm missing. Played great.
― lukas, Thursday, 6 August 2020 01:31 (three years ago) link
I played it a lot undocked on holiday and do think it's even better on a big screen but it's still great handheld
― stet, Thursday, 6 August 2020 01:42 (three years ago) link
i usually play it handheld but my tv is kinda shit tbf

― trapped out the barndo (crüt), Thursday, 6 August 2020 01:45 (three years ago) link
I think I would generally like them but it sounds like it plays well without. Thanks!

Motion control for aiming the bow works on the Life, at least.

― lukas, Thursday, 6 August 2020 03:04 (three years ago) link

― trapped out the barndo (crüt), Thursday, 6 August 2020 03:23 (three years ago) link
More limited motion stuff than the normal Switch for sure, but some.

lite has everything except the rumble and the infrared camera
technically ... but some motions are really annoying. I remember a "flip up" gesture for Mario Odyssey that I gave up on. Dunno if there are any games that let you do different gestures with each hand, those would obviously be impossible.
― lukas, Thursday, 6 August 2020 17:52 (three years ago) link
yeah obv theres plenty of motion control games that require the actual joycons since they need 2 motion sensors and not one
