love this addendum related to that:
the voiceover recording of my @dragonquest xi *Video Review* for @kotaku is 38 minutes long. in an effort to trim it down to under 30 minutes, i am cutting a lot of filler. here's 31 seconds of me talking about my neighbor kid playing the original dragon warrior lol pic.twitter.com/rMe879FUiV— tim rogers (@108) August 22, 2018

the one thing you can complain about and be right is the music which uses a shitty 90s sounding midi bank instead of a proper orchestral recording (even though one exists) because the DQ composer is a shitty, spiteful person who happens to have total creative control over the series's music

i put maybe 40 hours into it right before guilds came out and havent been back. i really, really enjoyed the amount of it i played but i also loved journey of the cursed king which this game is basically the same as. i would recommend you add some of the draconian quest stuff in to make it more interesting, i played with the harder enemies, no running from fights and no xp from weaker enemies ones.
― (° . ° )― (Lamp), Monday, 12 November 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link
the boss fights have been about the right level of dangerous so far but i think i must grind regular encounters way less in these games than other people because my final playtimes are always like 10 hours less than people say the game is
― ciderpress, Monday, 12 November 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link
i know i know it's dragon quest but this one so far is even more shameless than usual about ticking all the "in every jrpg ever" boxes
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link
yeah i imagine thats a large part of the appeal for a lot of players. it certainly was for me. i dont really grind but i can never help myself attempting to 100% games like these and having the draconian quest on made it so the game was still challenging to play

Any suggestions for a good strategy guide to use? Is GameFAQS still the best one-stop-shop in the year of our lord 2020? Yes, I'm finally starting this today.
Please note I am really only asking this wussy question because the first time I played through DQ8 I somehow completely missed the monster arena completely and I also barely did anything with the alchemy pot. Obviously this detracts from the fun of the game and my time is limited.
― sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:30 (three years ago) link
nothing in this one is missable, don't bother with a guide imo. when you get to the postgame if you still want to 100% the game thats when you can start looking stuff up

I ditched the horse almost immediately. Way more fun to stroll around doing pre-emptive strikes as one normally does.
Nice to see the massive number of story events taking place in between countryside grinding sessions. I love these games so much.
The first boss reminded me too much of Dragon Ball Z. Don't put antennae on DQ bad guys, Torayama, we know what you're doing.

I'm using a guide to help me optimize my skill point expenditures but ditching the walkthrough based on your advice. Of course my character builder guide says "give Erik boomerang skills" and I am opting for dual-wielding swords anyway because my philosophy says hitting multiple enemies at once is a lie

Also we must assume that human brain physiology doesn’t work the same in DQverse because if so then giving powerful offensive magic abilities to a person with an under-11 brain is a massive risk, even if they retain all their memories of being 21

xp thats actually my #1 complaint w/ this game is the soundtrack kinda sucks relative to its contemporaries, even other stuff out of square enix e.g. octopath traveler
there's a couple nice tunes though for the few towns that get their own one instead of the generic town music

I would have a pep power called Hardman Ban, like Poof, except it would always work, and the enemy comes back after three rounds (unless all other enemies are defeated before then). It would require at least one two other party members to also be pepped, doesn't matter who.

ugh, I did this too! I got pretty disenchanted with it all and put the game down for a long time as a result. only recently picked it back up to close the loop and do it a second time. still sucked.
difficulty is def too low. it seems like they didn't get the balance right after dropping random battles. I don't exactly miss those but there isn't any tension in the dungeons anymore.
still, all pretty minor since -

Anyone played the Switch version of this?
I've never played a JRPG but tempted by this as it's so pretty-looking.
Enjoyed the demo but the stop-start nature of the battles got annoying. I guess that's normal for RPGs, but I'm not really used to the playing style? Is that gonna be a problem, or do the fights get more fun and tactical as the game goes on?
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 8 January 2021 11:08 (three years ago) link
the switch version is good. you can turn the battle speed up so they go more quickly, and you can avoid most random encounters if you want. the fights do get more tactical as the game goes on, but it's an extremely beginner-friendly rpg.

You can also mostly get through the game without grinding (unless you count doing side quests as grinding, which I don't, esp in a game where 'questing' is kind of the point). I seem to recall my only need for grinding was to collect specific item drops for late-game crafting.
― salsa shark, Saturday, 9 January 2021 00:26 (three years ago) link

Been dutifully plugging away at the Switch version for several weeks now. Not totally maxed out gear wise but close enough. Just got the most powerful great sword in the game last night. Only a few more things I want to wrap up before taking the final boss. I've thoroughly enjoyed it, scratched an old school kinda itch I didn't know I had. Gonna be a little bittersweet finally putting this thing to rest. Spent a damn long time with it all told.
Different strokes, but I played this on the Draconian mode with stronger monsters. Think the difficulty level was just right with that on.

when you have a party of nine people, and then you kill one of those monsters that you can ride on, and it just shows your main character riding the monster, do you think that represents each member of your party riding on their own monster, or all nine of you sitting on one monster together?
this is a good game but it could use a wider range of music
