26 Members of National Team for World Cyber Games Selected

A huge national flag was waved by one player while a snow of confetti poured down on the stage. Mayor, lawmakers, CEOs and celebrities gathered around to cheer 26 young gamers who were just selected as South Korea’s representatives for the grand final of the World Cyber Games (WCG), the biggest computer gaming competition in the world.

For most people, patriotism may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of computer gaming. However, after five years of continuous growth, the WCG seem to have succeeded in taking the "video game nerds" to the outside world, where they play games for the honor of their nation. For the players, the WCG feels just like the Olympics.

"It feels great to play for my country again," "StarCraft" gamer Seo Ji-hoon said. Seo, an established star in the gaming world, won the gold medal in the 2004 WCG Grand Final in San Francisco. He will represent South Korea again in this year’s final, to be held in Singapore Nov. 16-20...
