Psychonauts
Sonic Mega Collection Plus
Alien Hominid
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
of course I haven't played shit lately besides We Love Katamari so I'm basically reading you my PS2 wishlist for after I finish grad school and they stop making movies and there's no more baseball or football going on.

Also, let me recommend the Tron 2.0 first person shooters. You seem to be fairly interested in first person shooters as well as highly stylized games, you must play this. It's one of the best FPS games i've ever played and the storyline is incredible.

I basically want 1) something in an urban environment that is different enough from the GTA games that I won't bore of it 2)a button mashing beat em up (but not in a Tekken-style arena, sidescrollers and larger environments preferred) 3)something cute with primary colors where you can bounce off of walls and defy gravity and even the bad guys are sorta cuddly 4) MORE sierra games!

The last three GTAs, Deus Ex, Syphon Filter 2, First Katamari, Super Monkey Ball, Prince of Persia, Ratchet & Clank 1&2, Winning Eleven 8, Spiderman(first one), Wolverine's Revenge, Sims, Wipeout, Hot Shots Fore!, and other stuff.
― adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)
1. A good racing game - the straight petrol ehad stuff is kind of boring, though. Wipeout is fun!2. A GOOD comic-book tie in (yeah I know).3. Other good sports games?

2. A GOOD comic-book tie in (yeah I know).
Second Spiderman game is pretty good, actually.
3. Other good sports games?
See, I personally don't like soccer at all, but I love Winning Eleven. Which is why I would think that anyone could enjoy Madden football or NBA 2k6. They're just really well made games, irrespective of sport allegiances. This is exactly why I wouldn't recommend any baseball game to anyone, as you have to be a baseball fan to derive even the smallest amount of enjoyment from them.
― polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)
This is why I didn't buy it for a while, and then I caved and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It depends if you loved the first one or not, though.

5 out of 5 stars Play it with your shirt off., July 9, 2005 Reviewer: B. Convery (US) - See all my reviews That's what I've started doing. It's a game that drips testosterone from marble columns of Athens to (but not quenching) the infernals of Hades. There's not much happy in Krato's Ancient Greece. Well, strike that. Maybe Aries is happy because he's ripping Athens to shreds. Fires, thunderstorms, Aries' steel clanging, while the helpless humans fire arrows at the God of War unleashed. Pah! Human Arrows. It's like trying to put out Hades' flames by blowing bubbles.
There is so much amazing about God of War. First, I'll talk about thought. There's folly about. That's the theme of Greek Mythology, ALWAYS. Folly between the gods and "their human playthings". However, Greek gods are flawed just like the human pawns. For the gods of Olympus err clumbsiness then clean-up their mistakes after. What folly! God of War WORKS as Greek Mythology. I love the concept of "destroying a god" through Pandora's Box. Opening Pandora's Box, the colloquialism, is to unleash a maelstrom of unpredictable chaotic events. Is that what happens when a god is killed? Absolutely. This is what I mean regarding thought. There are philosphical gems that glisten in Ancient Greece.
Second, the gameplay and controls are extremely tight. You'll use every button on the contoller when battling. You'll use every move. Rolling/evasion, blocking, comboes that can rise to triple digit numbers (my highest is 124) are necessary to avoid becoming burger to Aries' black-hearted baddies. This said, tight controls are necessary, work perfect, creating some ridiculously fast paced/intense action.
Third, is balance. Now some friends say I smoke too much over drinking, but I understand balance is required. God of War balances action and puzzle solving, and not once do the scales dip to one side. Sure, the game gets difficult and frustrating the further you take Kratos, but never is there too much fighting, too much puzzle-solving, or too much drinking. Wah? The balance is great.
Did I mention level design? No? It's brilliant. Sometimes it reminds me of Prince of Persia:SOT and sometimes Tomb Raider. Environments are very fluid, from the details of statues and Greek architecture, to Kratos' ugly reflection on a highly polished floor? I'd hate to be the sap who keeps those Greek floors so spickitty span clean. I wonder what that dude makes an hour. Benefits are worth it, especially if you get to glimpse the Oracle of Athens in her sheer top. Huh? Great level design.
To add one more edge on Kratos already sharp blades, God of War has a wonderful soundtrack. The music is ambiant sometimes, orchestral at others. Should I say it again? Ok. Balanced soundtrack.
I'll wrap it up. My wife came down when I was playing and she said, "Honey, why do you have your shirt off?" I looked at her. My eyes were bloodshot but not from God of War. I replied, "Kratos doesn't wear a shirt. If he doesn't, I don't."
Was this review helpful to you? YesNo (Report this)

I'd quite like an action RPG type thing, like Gargoyle's Quest, but anything will do. I'd like something that'll last a long time, but will keep my interest when I find myself stuck with nothing to do except Gameboy.

PS2, yes.
I = total n00b, was only ever a casual gamer at most, and thus am not all that interested in games that are very hard, 'cos really I'll just give up and feast on the latest 20's pop recordings comp/DC Showcase/Howard Hawks movie instead.
Over the years, I've loved Sonic (my main gaming obsession, I'd say I own them all but I'm sure there's plenty of obscure ones I don't, anyway, Sonic 1 and 2 for the Mega Drive and Sonic Adventure 1 for the Dreamcast are my faves), "Dr.Robotnik's Mean Bean Machines", "Warcraft II", "Full Throttle" (but didn't get very far at all), "Barrack", "Shenmue 2" (BIG fan of this), "The Sims 2" and "We Love Katamari".
WANT: Knights, pirates, goblins, orcs and suchlike; super-heroes; cuddly shit and quirky shit; cheap eastern mysticism; cowboys; WTF; RPGS that aren't that hard; basically anything that resembles the games mentioned above would be cool to know about.
DO NOT WANT: "Futuristic urban dystopias"; buckets of blood; beat 'em ups; shoot 'em ups; sports games (including, nay, especially car racing games); games with a strong misanthropic streak (that's what literature is for); I'm tolerant of the anime style but if it's too extreme it does get on my nerves; cool dudes with big fucking guns; games too close to reality (i.e. I do not want to be a gangbanger, mafia don or solider); spaceships shooting at each other.
Basically, I'm a fag. Reccomend me games please.

"Lego Star Wars" is a lot of fun, but not being able to save until you've completed a level is not good. Is this still common procedure?
"Singstar" must be the best party game ever. Sadly my friends and I have yet to get it together to actually HAVE a party, so instead I've been playing on my own, which I realise makes me a very major saddo, but it's fun! It's funny that the game doesn't care about lyrics, so you can stutter your way through a song and if you're in tune it doesn't really matter. Also the attempts at judging rapping are some bullshit, I let the Eric B & Rakim track play while I chatted with a friend, and it really didn't matter, as long as there were audible sounds (even laughter!) the rap-o-meter thought I was doing "okay!"
Whereforth "Singstar: The Fall" and "Singstar: Brak"?

The power cord on my GBA has been frayed by cats, and so it recharges unreliably and never seems to get fully charged. This seems like a good excuse to get a DS.
I love: Super Mario games (1, 3, Mario/Luigi Superstar, Wario 4, Yoshi's Island, SML, 2, in that order), Pokemon (I've completed five of them a total of thirty or more times), Warioware, sidescrollers in general.
I will never, ever, ever own a console because I work at home and I know the limits of my willpower. When I play them at friends', I can play the Soulblade series and Grand Theft Auto for days. Katamari looks fucking awesome but the last time I tried to rent it, it was defective.
I don't like games with a steep learning curve because if I'm not on vacation, I don't make time to play them for more than an hour at a time, usually while watching TV.
Is the DS right for me? The PSP? Or should I just fix the GBA?

was having a similar discussion this weekend with a fellow gaming chum. He's just moved out of my house and in with his girlfriend which means he's lost all access to my consoles and just has his PC.
Simply put, he now has to play GTA on the PC and he says its just not the same without the sofa and general comfort of the lounge-play.
Anyway my contribution to this thread. what is this NFS Carbon all about innit? Could it be recommended to a NFS fan, tho I do hope its not just another 'underground' variant.

Get the DS lite. The Nintendo DS thread is a pretty decent listing of games to consider. Pokemon Dungeon Rescue just came out, I think, and there's DQ Rocket Slime and tons of other stuff I don't have the time to really get into.
If you get a PSP, it means you hate baby seals and yourself.

Got $10 Amazon credit that expires end of the month. Either PS3 or Wii, older games definitely OK because right now I only own Batman: AA and Wii Fit, so MGS4 would be my default choice. Would prefer non-sports, non-FPS (or any first-person POV) game.

Poly, would you really recommend Prototype over almost any other PS3 game? I really like very bloody sandbox games but by the time it came out I was bored and annoyed with Infamous so I didn't bother.
― antexit, Monday, 7 September 2009 00:45 (sixteen years ago)
I can't equate it to PS3 games because I only have a 360 and have only played a few PS3 games at friends' houses, but I found Infamous boring and annoying and totally love love love Prototype. Prototype's biggest drawbacks are that the storyline missions are really kind of boring. Kill 5 of this specific kind of enemy, usually. But the core gameplay and movement is incredibly fun for me. The amount of mayhem that you can cause is really kind of spectacular.
