Final Fight-style beat-em-up + '70s cult film = now I'm going to have to pray for a Gumball Rally game next or something.

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Rockstar doesn't have a very good track record beyond GTA, so let's hope it's good.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, is it the same perspective as Final Fight/Streets of Rage/etc.? That could be sweet.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

ahem: come anticipate the warriors with me!

it's kinda funny that we have a whole board with no search function. ;)

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

using google seems to work

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

oh good, I was just using ctrl+f on the archives.

but anyway, THE WARRIORS! I preordered it and had it sent to mr teeny's office as a surprise today.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Rockstar doesn't have a very good track record beyond GTA, so let's hope it's good.

People always say this, but I'm quite the fan of Max Payne, Manhunt and State of Emergency and much prefer them to GTA. GTA's alright and all, but how long can a game go on for before it gets tiresome? I finished the first, second and third no problem, and just about managed Vice, but San Andreas seems to go on forever. Bring back the old arcadey gameplay and score system of the first two!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I absolutely HATED Max Payne.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I liked Red Dead Revolver!

elmo (allocryptic), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

That was a thread to anticipate the Warriors! This is the thread to gush over how much it rules shit!

It's got this weird vibe halfway between GTA and Final Fight -- mission-based assbeatings, lots of side stuff to do (tagging, robbery, mugging, stealing car stereos, lots of crazy shit that involves analog-stick control and various lunacy), a great storyline (including "flashback" missions) and so far a couple pretty swank boss fights. Most of it's total button-mashing twitch gameplay so far but the fighting system seems pretty decent. Plus the scenes they recreated straight from the movie are fucking fantastic, especially the opening credits. And the Warriors' hangout is about what you'd picture, an abandoned Coney warehouse with lots of amusement ride debris strewn around and some ratty couches and stuff.

Only gripes so far: graphically it's kind of murky (but then it's NYC '79 at night so hey) and the actor they got to be the substitute "keep running, boppers" DJ (the original voice passed away a few years back) sounds a bit "off".

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

crap ignore my thread i started.

bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

i love the move when you've got someone pinned down and you give them a swift knee to the groin followed by a slow motion boot to the head. complete with blood. i also love grabbing someone and slamming their head into a brick wall.

bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

So what IS the perspective like?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

same as GTA.

bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh. I never really liked the controls in GTA (only played Vice City for Xbx, though).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

and you can smash an acoustic guitar over a Hi-Hats head.

bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

xbox controls for gta are utter pants. the ps2 ones are marvellous in comparison.

so i just ordered this now, hopefully will arrive for the weekend.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

WTF AMAZON??

Shipment #1: Not Yet Shipped
Shipping estimate: October 18, 2005
Delivery estimate: October 20, 2005 - October 24, 2005

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I've had weird stuff with Amazon lately. I ordered a cd and a book at the beginning of the month w/free shipping, and it said it wouldn't ship until Nov. 4th. Then I got impatient, changed it to paid shipping, and it switched the date to Nov 18th! Then I changed BACK to free, and got Oct. 26th! WTF, AMAZON??

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I lousy 2 second clip of the Baseball Furies!

bingo (Chris V), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh man the Baseball Furies are fucking wicked in this. Their boss (who doesn't appear in the movie and was created just for the game) completely OWNZ.

disco violence (disco violence), Friday, 21 October 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

how much of the original dialogue tracks do they use? did they get any of the actors to come back?

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 21 October 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

argh my game won't get here until monday damn you amazon! I move on tuesday!

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 22 October 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

I think they had to rerecord all the dialogue but a lot of the original actors did come back, including Michael Beck (Swan) and James Remar (Ajax). The ringers they got for Luther and Cyrus are pretty good.

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 22 October 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

they had to get a ringer for Luther? Fuck, David Patrick Kelly can't be that busy.

Fun Fact: I wrote for a university sketch comedy troupe that was run by his niece!

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Alright, enough already: should I buy it or not?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 October 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I'll tell you after Monday evening

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

All right, holy fuck this first flashback level, where you have to destroy 5 police cars, SF2 style, with only two guys, with the angry cops after you THE WHOLE TIME. Anybody have any advice? It seems like the only thing to do is fight the cops while your buddy beats up the car and fights the bums and stuff, but the cops just keep coming! (Wow I love this game)

antexit (antexit), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

so, are there any bits that actually ARE like River City Ransom? Aside from the "travelling from here to there beating up random gangs along the way"?

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 23 October 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, there are stores, but all you really do is beat the hell out of them. There's a hippie store you can go into and hit guys in the face with skull bongs!

antexit (antexit), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, sold.

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, "sold"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 23 October 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

i just got this, will play it at lunchtime. reading the manual there's lots of buttons to remember!

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 October 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

and i was right about the controls.

ok first impressions, i've played up until doing the base tagging, i had to get back to the office. Lots of controls and fiddly bits. It's Manhunt with much MUCH more to do. Fighting seemed daunting at first but when it comes down to it it's just a lot of button smashing.

It's dark, shut those curtains!

And it's most certainly The Warriors! great atmospheric music just like the movie.

and haha smash those washing powder boxes, plooof!

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 October 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Actually, what I love about the fighting system is you do fine with button-mashing when the game starts, but as it gets harder and harder it becomes necessary to use more strategy and more sophisticated controls. Unlike most other brawlers there's practically no way to be cheap, either (except camping out by one of those regenerating six-packs of beer bottles, but even that isn't infallible). Anybody got swarmed by like 30 guys yet?

antexit (antexit), Monday, 24 October 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

except camping out by one of those regenerating six-packs of beer bottles

these replenish your health? i did not know this. mind you i have only played it for like 45 minutes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 October 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

"Magic. A whooole lot a magic"

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

No, they don't replenish your health, but they're a really good weapon, and you can just stand by them holding down the target button and alternating triangle and circle and keep winging them at people with very little damage to yourself. Especially useful during boss battles. The only thing that ups your health is drugs. Much like real life.

antexit (antexit), Monday, 24 October 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Haha, El-P is a voice in this! He "plays" the leader of the Saracens, a ripped-looking longhair Bensonhurst mook in a black wifebeater who looks like he digs him some Van Halen. The cognitive dissonance made me laugh throughout the entire cutscene.

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

well so far i'm not a great fan of this game, i turned it off in a rage last night during the oh so annoying riot mission as cop after cop after cop after cop busted my gangs ass.

How far off to the actual main game? I don't need all this pre main event nonsense.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

What do you mean? You get to start playing the game right away. The flashback missions are optional. You mean the part of the game that's composed of the movie's plot? I don't think that starts until about 15 hours' playtime in. Sorry dude.

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah i just mean the movie plot. i can see it's a neat idea though to add this extra bit of story to it, to stretch the game out. i'm just mad as hell and impatient and I want to flex it up real smooth with the lizzies. oh yeah!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

The movie portion of the game is a total ballbuster. The bit where you beat on the Orphans and the Baseball Furies are marathons of awesome but there's a couple of teeth-grinding stealth levels (including one that, if you fuck up, means ENDLESS SWARMS OF UNSTOPPABLE COPS) and the last fight against Luther, while relatively accurate to the movie (eventually), is disappointingly lacking in the whole hand-to-hand combat thing.

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

there seems to be a lot of spray-painting in this game. Also head-stomping.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I am in agreement with myself that i hate this game, the handcuffing thing redeems it unplayable, in my eyes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

If you dork around in a couple of the Coney free-roam missions you can win an ability to get cuff keys after beating up cops, so that heops a bit. You can also get the cuffs themselves so you can shackle people, though I haven't tried it yet.

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

I am in agreement with myself that i hate this game, the handcuffing thing redeems it unplayable, in my eyes.

??

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I think the handcuffing is great! Letting the cops bust guys in your party is a great way to get them off your tail so you can go and hide, and once you get a little practice avoiding the cuffs they never really get you.

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I've rented this out of curiousity and have to say I rather like it. Though, I'm only up to the mission after the beating Orphans one, and have spent most of my time free-roaming the streets and starting fights in the Warriors' hangout. The circle-button throws are great!

It's due back tomorrow night. Is there anything I should try before I take it in?

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
OK, I beat this last night-- that Armies of the Night Double Dragon game that gets unlocked is the awesomest! Has anyone gone around replaying all the old levels and getting the extra stuff? Is it worth it?

antexit (antexit), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

i couldn't even do the first level, having to unhandcuff gang members every few seconds just took any fun out of this game for me. plus it was too dark.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

You mean to tell me that YOU OBJECT TO THE HANDCUFFING IN THIS GAME? You? Ste? Well, I wish you'd have mentioned that before!

antexit (antexit), Friday, 2 December 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

oh right, haha, I'd forgotten I'd already mentioned that.

I also couldn't be bothered to remember all the fight combination buttons as I am teh lazy game player.

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Are we talking "X,X,X... X, A... X... uh, fuck it" lazy?

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah pretty much, gimme two buttons to punch or kick and i'm happy. anything more than that to make my man do crazy grabbing moves then OFF it goes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
do i want it?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I loved it, but I'm not sure i'd recommend buying it, as the story mode's pretty short, and the versus mode isn't quite as fun as I thought it would be.

antexit (antexit), Monday, 9 January 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

it's a lot better with the brightness turned up, don't believe that silly nonsense about setting it so that you can 'only just see' the coloured square.

but I still grow tired of the fighting, even just watching my house mate play it makes me yawn

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

I agree with you, Ste. I rented Eraserhead this weekend, and they've got a feature that helps fine-tune your television's brightness much like "The Warriors" square.

And guess what? I had to crank that brightness way up from where it had been with the video game. With all due respect, I'll take David Lynch's eye over some Rockstar geek any day.

The fighting is weird. I'm amazed that I get through those levels just by going X X X X X [] [] [] X X X O O O [].

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Ha i watched Crocodile Dundee last night and realised that the leader of the Orphans gang appears in this movie, when Mick greets him leaning outside the limo window on the street.

"You SEE what you get Warriors!!!"
