why would you do this?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

games with rubbish save points?

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

oh

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

that's the only reason i can think of, like Yoshi's you would start the level again from the beginning every time.

Or maybe a gruelling 60 lap race on Gran Turismo?

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't have any : /

unless slsk counts

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

jw (ex machina), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't figure out how to save on Yoshi's Island--or maybe I was just high.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

It's nice to know that it's waiting for me when I get home.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Fire Emblem is waiting. Waiting.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

I did this with Worms3d for a while, while I was having a smoke, but I got fucking sick of "shake yer coconuts" playing on a loop sending me barmy, so I turned the game off :/

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

since my pc used to be right next to my bed, i'd fall asleep occasionally while playing. the game music would permeate my dreams. I can't remember how many games i actually did this with, but Jedi Knight II was one of them.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

I got so pissed off at the first castle in the second world that I finally turned off Yoshi's Island. I think I lost three levels I had won. Games makes me so much angrier than people sometimes.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

lawks! The Warriors. Seriously is there no save game option in levels, even that first tag mission is looooooong

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 24 October 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Nintendo DS to thread - I never turn this thing off!

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 24 October 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

It's as if Nintendo looked back at their old consoles, the NES and the SNES and thought, "What made these so much more successful than our last two efforts?" and decided it was because people used to leave them switched on overnight because they couldn't save. I like to think they purposely leave gaps between save points and disallow saving on Electroplankton to force you to shut the thing up and leave it on.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 24 October 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe a gruelling 60 lap race on Gran Turismo?

I don't think I read this the first time around, but I used to do this all the time on Playstation racing games. Did anyone ever do the full 24 hours on Le Mans?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 24 October 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

does the DS go to sleep or something?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 24 October 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Yep, it puts itself into some kind of low-power standby mode that seems to last forever.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

It's great, you just flip the screen closed and it goes into suspended animation. I was playing Fire Emblem all day on Saturday and Sunday, like 2 turns at a time, just closing it and putting it down and picking it back up again. no sleep/resume required.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

that's cool! just like my laptop.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

(ps i just looked up fire emblem on ign... whoa!! it totally looks like advance wars meets battle for westnoth! i must own it!!)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

(but it's interesting, this graf from that review, in relation to what you said about sleep mode:

The game also has a unique feature that saves the game to cartridge after every single turn made, either by the player or the computer. This makes Fire Emblem extremely handheld friendly since players can simply turn off the system at any point in the action, and depend on having that point in the game return upon power-up. This might be a turn-off to some who have grown accustomed to saving during a particularly nasty point in the game...and if things don't go their way they can just quit and restart in that mission. That can't be done here. It definitely ensures that every move you make counts...even a potentially hazardous goof-up, like accidentally telling a party member to stay put instead of moving him out of harm's way, can't be fixed with a quick reset. Personally, I think this adds to the experience since it requires a careful mind for its strategy and gameplay.

...sleep mode is totally unneccessary for this particular game!! also: rogueist much??)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Sleep mode is "totally unnecessary" but saves restart/state reload time. Open it up and boom, your turn!

Hahaha the whole rogueist thread is why I started playing it again.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

wait - tom, is there a DS fire emblem?! or does your DS sleep with GBA carts? when I'm using a GBA cart if I shut over the clam the thing stays awake...

?!

c7n (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

I was under the impression that it slept with the GBA carts. So far the only DS game I have for it is the Metroid demo! Hell if I know what it does while that thing is closed.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

nope at least I don't think so... close it over and peek under the hood, the screen is still on and the LED is solid-green (it blinks intermittently when it sleeps, like with the DS carts)

which means... ?!?!?!

c7n (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

how big is the DS screen compared to the GBA?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

plus the sound stays on... bear in mind my DS is a little fukt

x-post

c7n (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Cozen, mine does the same as yours with the only GBA cart I've got, which is Sonic Advance 3. There's no way the way that thing blares out when you shut it could be mistaken for sleep mode, so perhaps Fire Emblem does sleep. Perhaps it depends how late the GBA game is, and whether they developed it knowing that the DS was just on the horizon (or already out, in the case of games being made now). Though, wasn't Fire Emblem released over a year ago?

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

This article has all the answers! It HASN'T been sleeping! WTF! battery life MADNESS!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I play all games with the sound muted so I never would have noticed! Jesus.
