Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

Well, I got it. And what do I think so far, after about a half-hour of gameplay? Not much, I'm afraid! It's true that it's an incredible accomplishment to put this whole world, that looks even better than it did in GTA3, on a handheld system. And I understand why it was necessary to remove the narrative depth, but having it be so close to a console game GTA just seems to emphasize its differences. It makes me think it was almost better when there was a more appreciable difference between consoles and handhelds, as with the GBA, so it was necessary to reimagine the game for different technology, rather than make a slightly inferior version of it that feels like merchandise. The writing is also not nearly up to par, and the camera and targeting/lockon systems are totally weird and hard to get used to.

It is really cool to be back in Liberty City after four years, though. In a weird way it feels like coming back to your hometown. Everything's just a little bit different, and you weren't expecting to know your way around, but you do.

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I was dubious when I heard it was all being done by a different Rockstar team.

I'm hoping the next GTA game for the next gen consoles will be set in a futuristic setting where they can let loose on artistic creation, much like GTA2 tried I think.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, am I ever hoping that won't happen. A Grand Theft Auto with pulse rifles and nanotech?

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

no see I thought that at first but if it's done in the GTA style of things it might be pretty impressive, especially if it's not over done and it's all quite subtle. Like a city that you couldn't quite put your finger on the time zone, a hybrid of machines and cultures from various historic times.

Also the emphasis should be on cool vehicles, not weapons, as it always has been.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

:(

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

It would be cool if all the cars and buildings didn't appear brand-new and specific to the time in which the game was set. I guess that's something that was necessary because of the limitations of the systems, and something we'll see less of in the next-gen one. (Though there were a couple of classic cars in SA, weren't there? A'68 Mustang and some others?

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I will say that the radio stations, though there aren't enough of them and the variety is a little weak, are awesome. The opera one is great, the bhangra one is great, and the rap one fucking KILLS. Every song on it you're thrilled to hear.

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

the main problem with a future GTA would be that all the music would have be horrible interpolations of what future pop music will be like. and that shit ALWAYS sucks.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

I would like to return to how about like Liberty City + Boston + Washington DC? That would make for a pretty good story.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but there'd be all kinds of oldies stations, and they'd probably get interesting/funny people to make the music. But the whole point of GTA games is that, unlike practically all other videogames, they're not set in the future! I know it's worked in movies and in other games, but the notion of a game that lets you be a criminal in a futuristic landscape, and all that that would entail, seems so embarrassingly William Gibson.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Shadowrun GTA might be fun.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't GTA:LCS take place two years before GTA3?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, in 1998.

omg a prehistoric GTA on which you ride dinosaurs.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 27 October 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

although the wall-painting flinstones game on the 8bits would be hard to beat

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 27 October 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

so antexit how is it on day 3? i'm predicting you come around to loving this game.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 27 October 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Surely GTA 2 did this perfectly!

although the wall-painting flinstones game on the 8bits would be hard to beat

Awesome. I'm so glad someone else knows this game. I had it on the Atari ST and even then thought "wtf". Not only were you quite literally watching paint dry, shit was impossible!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 27 October 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

OK, it's pretty good. You have to come around to the fact that despite appearances it's not a console GTA game. I wish it DIDN'T look as much like the GTA games as it does, because the differences --which are in detail and gameplay-- make it seem like you're getting ripped off, instead of making it seem like you're playing the most technically sophisticated handheld game of all time, which is what you're doing. The animations are pretty astoundingly bad sometimes (especially with melee combat, which often looks like two guys slipping slipping on an icy street, trying not to fall down), the cars and motorcycles handle all floaty and weird, there's no more location damage on the cars or in any great degree on the people, the story's pretty lame... Clearly these are things that take some getting used to after a year playing SA. But it's still fun, and as I'm getting used to the differences I'm liking it more and more.
Still in love with the radio though! Last night I did a driveby in the snow, taking out a mob boss in Little Italy while listening to "Shook Ones pt. II" on the radio! Pretty fucking cool! And there's a station that plays NOTHING BUT GIORGIO MORODER!
(xp)

antexit (antexit), Thursday, 27 October 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I wish there were actual radio stations like that.

Bn1 (Bn1), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

the non musical stations on Vice City were pure genius. The Flashback station in GTA3 was in itself superb purely for hosting most of the music from Scarface.

and did you say snow? SNOW ?!!

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 27 October 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

"La, La to el-lay-yo..."

I have no idea what the lyrics are to that song. I'm usually too busy trying to not to wreck my car into anything else.

However, it's pretty catchy.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 27 October 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Yes, there's snow. it looks really good, too. Makes the roads hellish slippery, though. OK, I like this game.

"La, La to el-lay-yo..."

Jimmy Mod Is The Damnation (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 3 November 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Um um um are the radio stations the same stations as in GTA3? Head radio, etc...there were a few tunes that I really liked...'fade away', 'forever' etc.

57 7th (calstars), Sunday, 6 November 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, like Ste said, there's a station on GTA:III that's all songs from the Scarface soundtrack. Meaning ALL GIORGIO MORODER! (Stupid me, I thought the non-Debbie Harry songs were "fake" songs like the ones on the other Top 40 station.)

FWIW, I know this because I'm FINALLY playing GTA:III. On the PC. Fuck the SPANKheads. For my next trick, I'll finish King's Quest VI.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Just got this two days ago and I'm loving it.

57 7th (calstars), Saturday, 19 November 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Finished this (well the story missions) - have to say I'm disappointed. I didn't think it was noticeably inferior to the ps2 versions, I just think the whole franchise is tired. I mean, I still love the environment, and get a kick out of just racing round the streets on a bike - each of my garages has at least 3 pcj-600s in - but doing the missions was such a chore. Hardly any of them seemed fun, they were all either too easy (completed on first try) or too hard (erm... took more than one try!) and it felt like I was only doing them in order to complete the game, which is totally wrong-headed.

I think San Andreas was the beginning of the end really, it was just too large and went on too long.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 29 December 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Too large! Madness!

I'm knee-deep in San Andreas (just about done w/ San Fierro, I think) and loving every single itty bitty piece of it. The mini-games, the side missions, the breadth & depth of the world, the wee little touches - Cesar's psycho cousin prank-called my cell! - are so so so awesome.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 December 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Well, yeah, obviously such a huge and load-time free vista was awesome, and I've always loved the mini-games and side missions the most. But having to get from one end of the map to t'other could be tiresome, and it was the Las Venturas missions that killed it for me - just too goddamn many of them.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 29 December 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Ah - haven't gotten there yet, tho I inadvertently boated into the LV area and got thwacked w/ a 4 star wanted level as a result (I think). And, yeah, the missions that took me into Boonyville were a pain @ first (like that goddamn early mission where Big Smoke has to shoot 4 guys off the top of a moving train LEARN TO AIM SMOKE!), but most of the annoyance was just trying to figure out the best way to get back into the citay - once I got a grip on the lay of the land, it wasn't so bad. Driving from Los Santos to San Fierro takes about 6 minutes, I think. Gives me a chance to listen to the radio stations w/out interruption. I might take a siesta from the main plot & return to my hometurf for some tagging shenanigans. Road trip!

& to think, I started playing San Andreas last week on a lark because a boat mission in Vice City was chafing my nuts.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 December 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

i played San Andreas today at lunch time, it's still good fun. And I can't believe that I've only just got the joke "Early morning missile crisis" which was mentioned on the radio.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 29 December 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

It's always inspiring to see the magic of San Andreas being discovered for the very first time. I wish that I could go back to that feeling, but I'm afraid that it has gone. Gone.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 29 December 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

What is this, an NSYNC video? Cut that out.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 December 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Wait until you see Bigfoot. That shit blew my mind the first time.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 29 December 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

oh you

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 30 December 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

God damn, San Andreas DOES keep going! Been playing for 40+ hours, and I'm STILL not done (tho this doesn't include the 50+ hours I've spent trying to steal the four police bikes GET OFF MY ASS PIGS.) It lagged for a bit, but the moment where CJ's brother returns is great - it actually choked me up a bit (and not just because I was tripping on Nyquil)! And returning to the hood to take back Grove Street (various other areas in LS) is awesome.

Also, HARRIER JET. Also also, JETPACK. The last (?) Tenpenny mission, I tried a frontal assault & failed miserably w/ the bastard dossier escaping in a copter. Used the jetpack, snuck in from behind, popped the dossier-holder, ran in & snatched it, RESPECT PLUS.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 23 June 2006 13:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm loving this.

It's gta3 with knobs on! Sooo many missions, I've battered it this weekend with a 9 hour stint on Friday alone I eventually unlocked the second island. More play time yesterday saw me unlock the third island. I'm just about to do in the guy on top of the casino with the katana and I've still only done 43%

Highlights so far for me,
Rampages are back! I really missed these from San Andreas
Bikes are cool.
The V8 Ghost car, fabulous looks like some sort of Simon Templar car crossed with a Lotus Esprit.
No eating bollocks, straight forward no nonsense health icons again.
Outfit changing is kinda cool.
New bits of map/changes to some areas to account for 'history'.
same control as San Andreas with the 360 swivel view.
Street races.
Smash TV!

I felt the first island missions were a bit too easy, even though there were lots of them. I've struggled with some infuriating missions on the second island though, killing the jogging mayor in the park in particular.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 26 June 2006 09:19 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed the new missions: the garbage trucks and the car salesman.

The movement of the police bribes is doing my head in.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 26 June 2006 09:26 (twenty years ago)

yes, it's like as if someone has tried to erase my memory of playing gta3 but i have these like flashbacks of where stuff is but it's all not quite right.

I forgot to mention how much i love all the new radio stations too, there said it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 26 June 2006 09:57 (twenty years ago)

jebus that Salesman mission is a complete bitch. how many levels are on it?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I wish they'd do a PC version of this:(

I wonder if they'll fix that weird missing, yet you can still see it tower glitch in Vice City. I was playing around with that last night & found it oddly dislocating. It would be cool if they kept it in.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Just bought this. Hour and a half spent on it last night. The driving is a nightmare! Also it's too dark! Why in my day you wanted to see the graphics... ::wanders off grumbling::

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

too dark? i thought it was quite colourful, compared to the original one anyway. Can you not turn up the brightness?

Still have twenty secret packages to find, some are pretty crafty to get at.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

I was gutted to hear that there is character improvement in this as well. That really pissed me off in SA. I just pray that there is no gym!

I will do the trick with the brightness. I'll have to sit closer too, it's really fast!

I love the Diablo Stallion.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

no there's no character improvement, it's back to good old 'pick up a heart icon' stuff. the only similarity with San Andreas is you can wear different clothes, and that's it. thank god.

i love the Liberty Jam station. Watched '8 Mile' the other day and realised it's the instrumental tune off this station eminem raps to at the end.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

My answer got eaten by a Poxy fule!

Fuck yeah about the lack of character improvement! Was surprised at not recovering health when I saved, bit irritating but at least the heart's right there. Actually, that's not something to complain about.

You cross your heart and hope to die etc that there is no skills improvement or need to eat?

Do you think Eminem designed a time machine to travel into the future to steal the sample of Rockstar? The swine!!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

deffo no skills improvement, it's how every gta game should be.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't be happier. Ste? Ste, I think I love you. Maybe it's the lack of character stats, maybe it's the chance to revisit Liberty City, all I know is that you have made me the happiest man on earth. Marry me?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

it's tempting, that might be only time anybody ever asks me that question.

GRARARAGH STUPID LACK OF CONFIGURABLE CONTROLS ON PS2!!! DON'T GET OUT OF THE FUCKING CAR, ACCELERATE! STOP CHANGING WEAPONS!!! WHY AREN'T YOU AIMING??? WTF IS WITH THE CAMERA??? HELLO, HE'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!!! MAKE WITH THE FUCKING STABBY STABBY!!! STOP FUCKING JUMPING, SHOOT THE BASTARD!!!

AH FUCK THIS!!!

::Throws controller on floor, puts in 'we heart KD'::

GRARARAGH STUPID CAMERA!!! WHY IS MY KATAMARI NOT GETTING BIGGER??? ETC ETC

::Repeat until fade::

After nearly a year of playing GTA:SA on a configurable joypad I am nearly at the point of putting my foot through the tv. The lay out is just so stupid: You're on a drive by, if you move your thumb up a little you should be able to able to shoot somebody not slow down! The aim button is on the wrong side, sprint is in the wrong place, the camera is a bit of a nightmare (but that's always the case in the later GTAs). The inability to swim, darkness of screen and the slow aim is really getting to me.

Whinge moan bitch I know but still, I wish I could change the buttons around :( Deep breaths, etc.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

i am finding the 'munitions dump' mission almost impossible, also the one where you have to kill the three celebrities before they reach the radio station (not taken the helicopter out yet)

;(((((

i am not a nugget (stevie), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I'm even close to their yet! Just completed first set of Salvatore missions (Aiming with PS2 controller = suxxor. I now understand all the complaining about the Zero missions) and that corrupt cop on the second island.

There seems to be less to distract me when I fail a mission meaning my stress levels stay sky high! I like the idea of killing things for the priest great but where did he come from??

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

If you're having problems with the aiming on LC, you probably don't want to do what I did and go back to GTA3. Basically, unless you're using a sniper rifle, you have no aim in that game. You just start firing away and maybe a little square will show up around your fated villian.

I got past the three celebrities by hitting the limo on the same street that your hideout is located right off of. Then the Hummer comes down a few seconds later. And then you speed like a motherfucker over to the highway next to the radio station to blow the helicopter down.

I know it sounds funny to accuse a game series known for its wanton killing of bystanders and intentional murdering of prostitutes of being mean, but Liberty City's missions were just plain rude compared to the other GTA games. The cutscene that makes the connection between Little Italy and the construction yard that it eventually becomes in GTA3 literally made me go yeesh.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

PP you made an interesting point above: Why does no one carry any money? I'm feeling really bad about killing everyone but come on, daddy needs new bullets you know?

I got past the three celebrities by hitting the limo on the same street that your hideout is located right off of. Then the Hummer comes down a few seconds later. And then you speed like a motherfucker over to the highway next to the radio station to blow the helicopter down.

Did this yesterday. On third island, first thing: Straight over to airport. Can't steal plane? Suxxor. Loved the RC races though! Is it me or does it all just seem a bit easier thank GTA:SA? The armor is fairly crap, you seem to take such huge damage. Melee fighting is bad, the aim totally fucks you up.

I'm still getting frustrated by the layout of buttons, the reverse button is totally the best one for fire. It means that I can control my speed easier!

More NB, is it worth getting one of those Brady guides? I'm not really having much joy finding side missions!

I am actually really enjoying the game. It's just that I don't know anyone else playing so I have to vent here. Sorry

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

There's lots of side missions, much more than I expected. I love the dirt bike mission in the small park, with the subway train rattling overhead occasionally.

Just climb onto bikes or into cars, suspicously parked, something might happen.

Don't cheat with a guide!! It's more satisfying finding these things by yourself!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

well, at least dont cheat until you finish the real missions and still havent found the side missions. i dont know what a brady guide is but there are plenty of free guides on the internet.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost)Remember our exchanges re. GTA:SA? You are a purist willing to put in the hours looking for things, I am lazy and want the shiny rewards now :)

I did find the little race thing. Fun!

SS: That's what I was thinking of doing, I've used the online guides once and that was for "Taking the peace" (r/c sindacco car, very hard the first couple of times. The advice was "take two out, drive off, repeat" very useful as you can imagine!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

fair enough, i spose i do have too much time on my hand :)

have you found the bike missions where you have to shoot via first person mode, with some other person riding the bike for you? Just be careful you don't shoot your riders head off. ouch!

the scrapyard challenge mission is vicious, i can't seem to get anywhere on it.

also, i'm finding the RC missions really hard.

i've not played it actually for a while, other games i'm juggling with lately. 2006 has been a heck of a year for play time.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Woah, haven't even found the scrapyard challenge? Where is that?

Where are those bike missions? Those sound just like my kind of thing!

Does the stadium ever have anything happen? It seems a bit of a waste of space. The best thing I found for myself was that guy who offers to race you, he's near Love Media (they're like the car stealing missions in SA).

I dunno but it always seems that the final island/city in these games is always a bit emptier. Lots of wasted spaces etc. The RC missions, tap once wrong and your buggered.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think the stadium has anything, it does seem a waste.

the bike missions are in a few different places, parked bikes in back allies that sort of thing.

i know what you mean about the last island though, seems they just gave up with doing much with it. shame as it has the most interesting map.

(the scrapyard is the car crusher yard on the first island, get on the Sanchez to trigger. it's like the kickstart mission on San Andreas but unbelievably harder)

and of course there's loads of Rampages, which are even fooking harder than GTA3's!!!!!!!!!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Aw man savage, Only found one rampage so far. It was in a garage underground on second Island. Near the Church.

Guess what I'll be doing tonight?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

Oh hey, has anyone got in to the red van in front of the stadium? That has to do something surely!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

The last island is a bit lame in gta3 as well. I trawled youtube for the little italy implosion cutscene, but couldn't find it. I was playing on GTA3 last night, going past the big building site on staunton island, pretty weird, because suddenly the place has a history, it makes it seem a little more like a real place in some way.

It was even weirder going back to GTA3 after playing LC and realizing that Toni's Portland hideout somehow got demolished.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i thought somehow that was going to be explained at the end of LC but wasn't. it is cool though to have all the other history now, i hope they bring VC stories to the PS2 as well and do the same treatment.

i've not seen this red van you speak of Kv!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

That is because it is a magical van... I have fallen in love with the Yakuza Stinger, that baby is wild!

(yes, I am well aware of what jokes can be made, try to refrain. Thank god Dan Perry doesn't play GTA:LCS ;) )

The mission with the tank was the shit! I got a real scare when my wanted level didn't go down. Thank fuck for the spare car in my garage! In case you were wondering, it was a Yakuza Stinger...

Didn't get to the scrap yard. Thinking of finding hidden packages to prolong the game. Should a Mod put *Spoiler* in the title of this thread? I don't want to spoil it for everyone else!
What's everyone's favourite vehicle?

the Hellenbach

Right, I'm definitely going to play this again soon. I still have a few packages to find.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

Aw man, yakuza missions are great! Boats, Rocket Launchers, Geisha...

I think I know how to pass the mission: Does it require using rocket launcher while standing in the boat? I nuked the other two from land.

there's a VC Stories trailer out, but it's mostly just cut scene stuff.

Woke up on Sunday morning to try this mission again. It appears that I did it pissed as a fart on Friday. I have no memory of this!

I can't tell if I'm grateful to drunk me for removing the stress or a bit pissed off at not getting to play with my rocket launcher some more :)

Last Yakuza mission: Piece of piss.

Sorry that should be piece of cake for those not from my neck of the woods. We don't eat all that well in Ireland...

six months pass...
Got back into this lately, loving it to bits !

The hidden package locations are a treat, the first 50 were quite obvious but the other half you really have to work for. Some serious climbing and acrobatics to do to get them.

Finished that bike mission in the park, got my 'Manchez' now. Shame it only comes in red.

Boats are still shit in this version I noticed.

BTW, Ste, Crackdown for the 360 is more or less exactly what you wanted from a futuristic GTA.

antexit, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Really? Is it any good?

Ste, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

i have resorted to cheats to complete tricky missions in Vice City Stories. the shame...

SPOILER

after completing the mission where you has to kill the many hott gat-toting girls, do you get the option to buy that hotel? if so, how? did i miss my chance to be teh hotelier?
