I haven't played a good space shooter in such a long time though! It's sad.

What was the first 2D side-scrolling (or not scrolling, hey) fighter?
And is "Beatemups" the accepted genre tital for RCR/DD/FF-alikes?

I think people like "brawlers" these days for RCR/DD/FF-alikes.

These two, and Kung Fu Master all came out in 1984, so even if they weren't the first, 1984 was the year the genre became popular. It's probably not a coincidence that The Karate Kid came out the same year.

I always use this as a catch-all for fighting games, scrolling or not, but I think that might be a British thing. When I said "fighting" I meant versus non-scrolling games, but if I'm allowed to lump scrolling in with them I'll gladly take them to the desert island too!

My second choice was originally going to be light gun games, but there's only so much arm and eye strain one can take. Also, if I pick music games I can play Vib Ribbon, using all my Desert Island Discs.

I have no idea what alanbanana's are really referring to!

Last night I had a moment where I realized why I like turn-based so much more than any other kind of game, when you get into a truly tight situation and you just get stalled, then make your "oh fuck it here goes" decision, and you WIN, it's easily as exhilirating as any thrill I've ever gotten from beating a level or boss in an RTS or action game. Probably more so because you get to actually relish your bullshit lucky success instead of having to immediately address some other pressing concern that's killing all ur dudes.

I wld possibly replace text adventures with god games if I was allowed books on the island, I think.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I don't think I would.
