From the makers of the world-famous GTA series! Hope you like shortpants! Coming in OCTOBER 2006 (tho that won't stop Gamestop from taking advance orders)!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

October?! i thought this was out much sooner. ah well I'll have forgotten all about it by then.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

but it sounds okay, if it's done like the old SkoolDaze game then they're onto a winner for me.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

The Rockstar games site said October, I thought! I hope it's sooner!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Hahahah, wasn't this supposed to be out LAST october?

and Rockstar had some inner-city anti-violence groups protesting their HQ over it?

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine they'd want to release Bully & The Warriors @ the same time.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
APRIL!

I'm stupid.

The bully looks like John Hartson, but his victim doesn't look enough like Eyal Berkovic.

Compare.

It's coming out for Spring 2006(May/June), and it'll be rated for Teen!

says November on Amazon.

I've picked up this scent in our office which totally reminds me of playing Skooldaze.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 4 May 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

All I ask for is for it be GTA:SA in a school, and that'd be great. Even if it's crap.

My Vileness Is a Dream (noodle vague), Thursday, 4 May 2006 10:05 (twenty years ago)

if this is anything like Skooldaze, omfg it's gonna pwn.

This looks possibly fun

These video games must be TAXED! they're teaching our children horrid values, like its okay to be a bully!

The Xbox version has been cancelled in the US, doubt they'll go to the effort to release it just for Europe. And it now seems to be called Canis Canem Edit.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Monday, 4 September 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

worst name ever

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 4 September 2006 07:21 (nineteen years ago)

I love how they predict a problem with the name "Bully" so change it before release, but assume (correctly) that GRAND THEFT AUTO is fair game.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 4 September 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

And call me naive, but what exactly would the problem be with a Columbine simulator? Gus Van Sant seemed to get away with it!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 4 September 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

B-b-but the psycho-goths at Columbine were the victims of bullying, surely? A game that helps effete wankers to live out their revenge fantasies without using pipe bombs must be a good thing.

ONIMO's lips can't feel! (GerryNemo), Monday, 23 October 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

A spokesman for parent company DSG International said the videogame was not in keeping with its "family-friendly image".

Yet they are still selling GTA:LCS, The Warriors, 187 Ride or Die, Yakuza, Reservoir Dogs and Scarface amongst others. How does that tie in with their "family-friendly image"?

ONIMO's lips can't feel! (GerryNemo), Monday, 23 October 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Mafia "family," duh.

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 23 October 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

I've almost finished it, and I'm surprised at how much I like it. It takes a simple idea and a bunch of silly mini-games and turns them into a really fun and engaging game. You pick a lot of fights, but they only get as far as kicking a guy repeatedly in the nuts when he's down, and hey, that's been the bedrock of society for centuries.

The controversy is totally unwarranted. It's a really harmless game, although there are zero sympathetic characters. (Well, okay, I thought the Yum Yum Market owner seems like a decent guy. But that's it.)

save the robot (save the robot), Monday, 23 October 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

antexit has this. it's really fun.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 October 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's easily the best GTA clone I've played. I've only played it a bit but I was very impressed.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 23 October 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

I guess it's more of a "sandbox game" than a GTA clone, per se, but it's really quite charming and original.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 23 October 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I read some detailled reviews for this, and I now have no idea where all the "omg Columbine in a game" complaints came from. You cant shoot or kill or even badly hurt anyone. You cant steal or do drugs. Its a game in a school, with all the rules and pulling girls hair and kicking guys in the nads that entails. I mean you even have to make sure yr wearing yr uniform or you get punished. It sounds way more like a sandbox Sims than anything.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 23 October 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

Adds features that were missing from GTA as well.

p.s fuck you, rockstar. can't wait til you stuff me on the new GTA game, too.

i hope so.

teh_kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not sure if it's my ps2, but when i play this game the load times are extreely long. i'm talking like...2 or 3 minutes just to do something silly like walk through a door. is this the game or my ps2?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's your PS2

It's reminding me a lot of Schooldaze too, and you have to go to classes and be back by a certain time every night or you'll pass out. I got this today and haven't had any time for mindless violence in it yet.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

i loved skooldaze.

Dxy (Danny), Saturday, 28 October 2006 08:31 (nineteen years ago)

me too. and Bak 2 Skool.
i think i'm gonna have to get this.

teh_kit (g-kit), Saturday, 28 October 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

LOVING this. such an inventive rejig of the sandbox game blueprint, a bunch of minigames connected by a larger narrative. its *all fun, including the lessons. my favourite GTA clone so far...

am maddeningly obsessed with the penalty shootout.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Monday, 30 October 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

"best gta clone ive seen so far"
"its like skooldaze"

sounds too good to be true. i bet the controls are shat or something.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

fuck it, i'm gonna get this tonight.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

jezus amazon reviews are the fucking worst, does anyone actually wait until they've *played* the game before ranting on and on about it. fuckwits!

'm going to wait and see what teh kit says

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

SUCH PRESSURE

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

people who have played this: what's the framerate like? any big dips? this is my biggest worry with PS2 games.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

i must admit, i saw the advert on telly last night and the graphics looked really shoddy. i can't see the frame rate being too much of a worry then.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

couldn't get this tonight. seems that the only place on the way home from my work that sells games, Morrisons, is part of the silly boycot. I'll order it tomorrow.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

This game is so fun. Framerate is no problem; the problems are that it's a little too easy, there aren't enough classes and the camera is kinda messed-up, occasionally breaking completely. Other than that I've rarely had so much fun just hanging out in a videogame. Everything in it is so fun and clever. And as much of a non-starter as the bogus controversy is, I really never thought I'd see the day that you could make out with a fifteen-year-old boy in a video game.

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

?!?!??!! :-O

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

Is that like the two player thing in GTA:SA where you could snog the other player or is there something about this game that I'm not getting?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

You can kiss girls in the game by flirting with them and offering them a gift. (Works a little bit like Fable.) But it turns out that a few of the boys in the game also like kissing.

funky music

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 2 November 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

funky music is right! i'm thoroughly enjoying this.

things that are great: the musty detail of the school & town. maybe my eyes are burned after playing vice city stories but this looks great. the blend of 50s/60s and contemporary visual elements is seamless.

i love that your character is a scrappy little bastard. he's the shortest guy in the game, so funny. the clothes all look great. (playing with dolls lol)

the writing and voice acting are as good as rockstar have ever gotten -- which isn't saying much, tbh. i have daydreams about rewriting the cutscenes from these games so that they have actual humor and speed and dramatic punch. but, not bad. the random shout outs are often very funny.

the tasks are all interesting, and i like that there is a clock that matters: there are dozens of things you could be off doing, but you aren't completely free (until you get all the classes done) ... and you get tired and pass out after 2am! the change of the seasons looks great, too.

that said: i'm really sick of the hidden item search/reward dynamic in these games. whenever i pick something up and see the "x/265 collected!" msg at the bottom of the screen my heart sinks a little.

David R., Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

pretty fun, definitely like gta in that you can pick it up and put it down whenever.

bnw, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

really? I didn't find that at all. Having to go back to your dorm every five minutes to sleep, hardly anything else to do other than the main missions which are littered with cut scenes and awkward button pressing arrangements. A loading time for almost every building you walk into.

Awful

That and the fact that it never really felt like a place you wanted to explore. I disliked the fact that you couldn't climb properly.

That said, I did enjoy it as a kid's version of GTA.

hyggeligt, Friday, 18 April 2008 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

It also had an orrible colour scheme, all washed-out and drab. It's not Liberty City so give us some pretty graphics.

It was a nice enough rental, but I'm glad I didn't buy it.

Definitely disagree with this... I loved the greens and blues in this game. In fact I think that Rockstar nails colors in virtually all of their games, except GTAIII-- Vice City, San Andreas, Bully, and The Warriors all had amazing palettes.

Will M., Friday, 18 April 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

GTAIII was pretty cool looking for its time.

polyphonic, Friday, 18 April 2008 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

bully pretty obviously didn't go for up-to-the-minute photorealism, it had a grainy 70s-cinema kind of look, which fit the animal house/porky's thematic feel. i wish more games did stuff like that, made each world recognizable in a novelistic kind of way, instead of getting all bonered out over water reflection fx and framerates and that kind of shit.

the visuals in this game were great, it's the gameplay that was weak. it had the most detailed hand-to-hand fighting engine of any of the gta games (grappling! combos!), but nothing you come up against is that hard. coulda been double dragon + a sierra game, but nooo.

like i said upthread, i'd kill to rewrite the dialogue.

gff, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

^^^This.

The Warriors all had amazing palettes.

Very true!

hyggeligt, Monday, 21 April 2008 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

I realise that that makes it sound like they were all wine connoisseurs!

hyggeligt, Monday, 21 April 2008 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

So far, it's OK -- yeah, probably best as a rental, but too late for me. Been playing only an hour at a time; the first big mission (where I have to escore a fat kid past bullies to the women's bathroom) is a pain. Had fun pulling the fire alarm in my dorm and spraying the kids running around w/ a fire extinguisher and then fighting them all off.
