Gamefaqs explains it better but it's like, each character coupling starts out with a score at a certain number, and the LONGER they spend time within 3 spaces of each other, the more that number goes up (at different rates for different pairs!) and once it hits or passes a certain level, you can have the conversation! And then you can keep pushing it up to like 3 conversations for some pairings. By which point I guess they're married or something, I dunno.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Sounds gay.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

:)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

do they have to spend that time consistently? like w/o a break through multiple levels? if they're apart for a turn does it revert to 0?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

SLOKKY: no. any turn they're within 3 spaces or whatever the number goes up. It can take like the whole fuckin' game to get some of them to talk to one another I think. Who knows. The dork lords at Gamefaqs have charts for this shit.

"Sounds Gay" is the new euphemism for "that's SO japanese"

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

my little guys are chattin' away! thanks tom.

you can only have one support convo per level right? i mean, per map?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 January 2006 03:35 (twenty years ago)

I've never had more than one, in the one I have there's very rarely enough to do on any one map to keep people together for that many turns.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

actually i scored two last night!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

TOMBOT nothing about fire emblem is CONFUSING ME (yet)

coznebb (cozwn), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

this and order of ecclesia in the one DS: gaming heaven

coznebb (cozwn), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

unearthed some deets on another forum about FE DS (currently only available in jpn):

"OK. Now for some controversy!

There are significant differences between this and the GBA/GC/Wii games, and between this and all other FE games, too! Here are the new things that you might not be used to!

-New graphics - for manga and anime fans, the characters in this have been redesigned by Shirow Masamune, of Ghost in the Shell fame. They are nothing special, in my opinion. I said some negative things about the animations a couple of posts ago, but they have grown on me. I don't like them quite as much as the GBA animations, but they are leagues ahead of the GC abortions. They are good - that is all.

-Mid-map saves (!!) - Say what?? You can save the game during a mission?? Yes, you can, AND you can go back to that save as much as you want to. There are shiny spots (usually 1 or 2) on the map. If you move a unit on them, you can save the game, and the spot disappears. So, no multiple saves or abuse, which is good. I'm pretty old-fashioned, though, so I don't use these.

-More characters than you can poke a stick at - I think the first English GBA game has something like 40 characters, with the possibility to recruit 1 (or maybe 2) every chapter. Now, I'm only on chapter 6 right now of this game, and I have over 20 people in my army. Hell, in just the last chapter, SIX people joined my team. Yes, six! And the silly thing is, most of these recruits are absolutely useless, even if I COULD fit them in my active team. They mostly start at level one, with horrible stats. I babysat a couple of units in the GBA games, but I'm not going to babysit a whole bloody army.

In addition, the "gaiden" side chapters in the game often require you to have a small army! Like, say, less than 15 people for the 6x chapter, so I've heard. So, if you want to get to these chapters, and recruit the units inside them, you have to kill off characters. To be fair, I think the gaiden chapters here are more for people who are really bad at the game, and keep losing units.

OK. I'll just grab a beer, and get to the stuff that is missing from the GBA games! You will be surprised, and perhaps a little mystified!

OK, here's the final bit for now. If you started with the GBA games, chances are you'll be used to some things by now. Well, get un-used to them! They are relatively new features, after all. This game features:

-No rescuing, no shoving - If your weak unit is within a stone's throw of a Pegasus Knight, and you cannot block the path of the enemy with other units, then your weakling is fucked. Permanently, as perma-death is still very much in force here. You can't pick them up, and you can't push them out of the way. Personally, I like this, as it forces you to think that much more carefully about protecting your units.

-No supports - No support conversations or abilities whatsoever. Aside from maybe one or two conversations when you recruit characters, and the cutscenes between missions, the characters don't talk to each other, let alone give each other stat boosts.

-No promotions for Marth, and no Assassins - Marth doesn't promote. He can go to level 30, but he doesn't promote. Neither do thieves, for that matter, so no instant kills for you!

Anyway. Aside from all the changes, I still think I like it. I'll play through a bit more before committing to liking the game, though. The AI seems much improved, and there's online multiplayer, too! I don't think I'll play multi, though. It doesn't interest me much."

coznebb (cozwn), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

are you talking about shadow dragon??

¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶ (Lamp), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

yup!

coznebb (cozwn), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

oh, my last post (the re-post of some dude's forum ramblings) is about shadow dragon

I, myself, am just getting round to playing the original GBA FEs for the first time!!

coznebb (cozwn), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

xpost

okay obv you are i thought maybe you were talking about something new for a min. all the stuff like save points were added because the original was hard as hell and this is still probably the hardest fe game

¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶ (Lamp), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

haha "this" being shadow dragon. sacred stones is probably the best of the GBA ones i think i still have some disgustingly nerdy chart i made graphing levelling potential. i made in order to chose the best class promotions.

has TOMBOT or anyone else played the Wii FE?

¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶ (Lamp), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

pls to scan in yr nerdy chart and post here

purely for research purposes obv

Okay, who wants to sell me their Fire Emblem: Awakening cart for 3DS? I'll give you more than any trade-in shop will.

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 17:07 (eleven years ago)

yeha i remain deeply disappointed that this game has gone up in price and i still don't have a 3ds

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 1 January 2015 14:31 (eleven years ago)

disappointed there hasn't been a followup announced, that STEAM game looks ... ugly

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 1 January 2015 15:15 (eleven years ago)

Spent way too much energy trying to find a used copy of this at a decent price, so I just bought it new and it's really good! Really well put together! There's like 3-4 different art styles used in the game, and they still go for pixel art for the strategic overview, which I dig.

It's been years since I've played a FE game but I don't remember a Suikoden amount of teammates you meet.

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Sunday, 11 January 2015 18:38 (eleven years ago)

Also, when did this series go insane in terms of the out-of-print titles? The Super Smash Effect?

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Sunday, 11 January 2015 18:41 (eleven years ago)

Smash is helping, but i read somewhere that Awakening is the best seller in the West by quite some distance (and 2nd in Japan?), so a lot of new people are trying to track down previous games. There has been a reprint of the Wii game recently in the US, but it's still not cheap.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 11 January 2015 20:20 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, all the Wii copies are running like $80 per

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Sunday, 11 January 2015 21:08 (eleven years ago)

lookee lookee, they actually made a FE anime series decades only. Only two eps were finished, apparently, but here 'tis:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc7_muIkPbw

Also, I gave in and picked up FE:A new last week and am heavily enjoying it. I dig that they still use sprite art for the tactical view. Also bought Shadow Dragon offa craigslist so we'll see when I finally get around to that.

The Thin Blue Slime (kingfish), Saturday, 4 April 2015 18:03 (eleven years ago)

Yeh that's such a weird trailer, seems more Persona than SMT or FE.
super excited for the next 3DS FE game(s), not out til 2016 tho dammit

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 4 April 2015 18:11 (eleven years ago)

2016 in Japan or when the translation gets released?

The Thin Blue Slime (kingfish), Saturday, 4 April 2015 23:07 (eleven years ago)

2015 in Japan, 2016 in US/EU. It's being released in Japan like Pokemon with two versions - most people are guessing that there will be one version in the west, but who knows really.

hilarious that people are saying that the SMTxFE is too anime when this is the latest trailer for the next FE game ffs

Anime shit I have no problem with. A Sengoku era-looking FE might be fun.
