Tactical RPG Advice

I might finish FF:Tactics eventually after several years of trying.

I need a new one. We only have a PS2. Should it be:

Suikoden Tactics
La Pucelle
Disgaea
Makai Kingdom
Phantom Brave

or are they really all lots better on the GBA/DS? I have some that look interesting but I really need to make myself finish out the first Fire Emblem. I'm good like that.

Nobody better even mention

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I've heard great things about various incarnations of Suikoden. Beyond that... dunno.

Dan (Mr. Helpful) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

DISGAEA DISGAEA DISGAEA. The other Nippon Ichi srpgs are really good but not in the same class at all. I've heard bad stuff about Suikoden Tactics.

Disgaea has a lot of lame otaku crap but it's pretty sick in re: character building, stat whoring, all the fun stuff. It took me over a year to beat.

adam (adam), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

It took YOU a YEAR?

We have a winner. See you all in 2014 I guess!

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

i would like some info on the GBA ones, actually. i finished the shining force remake (which = total lightweight obv) and love FFT Advance but find it unlikely i'll ever finish it

tom west (thomp), Friday, 27 January 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

The Disgaea strategy guide is available as a free PDF d/l from Double Jump Books, who are by a large margin the best game-guide publisher. I'll find a link later.

Rebelstar is pretty good for the GBA. It's very much like X-COM. Short, though.

The Yellow Kid, Saturday, 28 January 2006 06:06 (twenty years ago)

TACTICS OGRE, PS and GBA versionz

butts lmao (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 28 January 2006 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Tactics Ogre was the solitary reason that I purchased my first-generation GBA, back before FFTA had even been announced. portable tactical rpg goodness was pretty much the most exciting development in my life at that time.

butts lmao (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 28 January 2006 08:26 (twenty years ago)

I have an unopened Tactics Ogre sitting here on my shelf (super-cheap from KB Toyz)--perhaps I'll get into it. Does it have unskippable cutscenes? That's my cue to sell a game back immediately these days.

adam (adam), Saturday, 28 January 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

the rebelstar is like the x-com in the smartly developed narrative and the amazing sense of atmosphere? or is it in the combat engine, bcz that would be kind of less interesting

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 28 January 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

X-Com combat was great--I liked that part way more than the unwieldly world-map stuff. My bases were always crap b/c I'd accelerate time til some aliens landed.

adam (adam), Saturday, 28 January 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Well, I've actually never played X-Com. But from what I understand, the combat engine. The atmosphere and narrative in Rebelstar isn't very impressive.

The Yellow Kid, Sunday, 29 January 2006 06:33 (twenty years ago)

Change that, I might not finish it, because Wiegraf's a fucking BITCH.

TOMBOT, Monday, 30 January 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

is that the 1v1 fight with Wiegraf? i remember that fight as being a really good opportunity to score some cheap JP actually. just circle the map and alternate between Accumulate and Yell. once you've maxed your speed and phy attack stats you can just go up to him and kill homeboy in one hit, and as a bonus you've probably made like 9,000 jp by that point.

what always stymied me on FFT was the fact that i'm anal about stat-building and crap, but in this game it nets you v. little in the way of positive results since all the normal encounters are scaled to your level. so i always end up starting off by making all my d00dz master each class one by one, eventually realizing how pointless it all is and quitting. the one time i actually beat the game was when i just said 'fuckit' and skated through the game at the lowest level possible, realizing that the story maps are easier to get through when you make suicide runs at whatever the objective is (ie. kill this one dude) and do nothing else. i beat the whole thing in like one day, but in the process i ended up skipping all the dialogue and it was sort of completely unsatisfying. not that trying to follow the story nets you a lot of satisfaction either.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Monday, 30 January 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I've been playing Hoshigami, which is akin to kicking yourself in the head with your own severed leg that you took off WITH the PS1 controller. In the best possible way, of course. Game is fucknig hard. Characters perma-die and shit. Fire Emblem on the GBA is lots of fun too, in the "perma-die" category.

I wish I hadn'ta lost my copy of Tactics Ogre for the GBA. Guess I'll have to DL the ROM and play it on the laptop.

And continuing the "not actually for GBA like you asked" line of ideas, Silent Storm and SS: Sentinels are great picks for the PC. It's like Jagged Alliance, if it was based around a WWII robot-mech conspiracy, and made the jump to 3D in near-perfect fashion. I feel like there's something i'm forgetting, though.

Disgaea 2 preview up

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 February 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Anyway I haven't even UNWRAPPED my brand-new copy of the OG Disgaea bcz I got stalled on the Wiegraf fight in FFT (never bothered to have Shabazz learn Auto-Potion had to start over back in the fucking Orbonne Book Depository before my Bard had even learned to Fly) (fuck ass shit fuck you game Wiegraf) so I'll probably get

Is it stupid for a person who pretty exclusively plays sprite-based turn-based stat-otaku Battle Chess remixes to wonder about buying a component adapter for his PS/2?

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 February 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

so I'll probably get
...Disgaea 2 in 2017 or whenever the Texans and Cardinals meet in the Super Bowl.

I've also promised myself to switch it up and play LEGO Star Wars a bit, for health reasons

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 February 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I just bought Stella Deus used for 30 bux or something, it's GORGEOUS

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 17 February 2006 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it looks great, but is it any GOOD?

TOMBOT, Friday, 17 February 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I bought fire emblem!

I also bought advance wars 2.

Those guys are awesome.

adam (adam), Monday, 20 February 2006 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it looks great, but is it any GOOD?

Eh, it's alright.

Will M. (Will M.), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:06 (twenty years ago)

WHAT IS THAT ADE?>?

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

for a guy who occasionally drills down into metadata for fun you sure are sad sometimes

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

are there any other (good) tactical RPGs on the DS?

czn, Friday, 18 July 2008 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

My standards are pretty low for the TRPG, especially for the DS/GBA, but...

super robot wars OG1 and 2 (GBA)
luminous arc (DS)
yggdra union (GBA)
fire emblem, both (GBA)
front mission (DS)
advance wars 1, 2, (gba) 3 (ds)
rondo of swords (ds)
drone tactics (ds)

if you need more let me know, i will think harder/use a list/ think of more for GBA

Will M., Friday, 18 July 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

I use a "flash cart" but it's slot-1 so no GBA for me; might fish out my GB micro tho cos I fancy the super robot wars games which are presumably cheap$ on e$ay now

czn, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

best TRPG for the GBA btw (besides advance wars) is rebelstar tactical command... it's like a kawaii space hulk

czn, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

You know, I clicked on this thread thinking it was going to be some Clausewitz shit about what to do with archers

thomp, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Frederick the Great beat 80,000 Austrians at Leuthen with only three fighters and a black mage, etc.

thomp, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

is that rthe one thati s made by ex-xcom dudes? i started playing it, was awesome, lost my save file (i hadn't figured out how to do GBA correctly on my flash yet). (xxpost to rebelstar)

Will M., Friday, 18 July 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

does tactical just mean turn based combat?

bnw, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

nah, that'd mean like dragon quest nd final fantasy count. "tactical rpg" means it's an rpg but it's played out on a grid and shit like distance, movement, and position matters IN ADDITION to howl ong you've been running around gaining levels or wahtever.

Will M., Friday, 18 July 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Rebelstar was made by the Gollops, I think. I need to hunt that down.

Nhex, Friday, 18 July 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not saying break the law, but those who do use ndash.eu for DS/GBA

Will M., Saturday, 19 July 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

yggdra union is flyyyyyyy
