Just got it yayayayayay!
Waiting for girl to come home with DS.
Melton, I know you have this, so feel free to tell me what to expect.
Back with impressions shortly.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 28 January 2006 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Woo! If your reactions are anything like mine, expect your first five minutes to be complete confusion, but pretty soon you'll fall in love with it. Then you'll start playing it in bed. Then you won't be able to sleep until you've had a go of it.

Does the American one come with earphones? I'd recommend sticking some headphones on, definitely, even if someone else is watching you play it. They'll appreciate the utterly bewildered look on your face.

Also, if you've got an easy way to get it to play through your stereo, it sounds incredible.

Looking forward to your opinions - everyone I've shown it to loves it.

HMM

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 28 January 2006 02:58 (twenty years ago)

I am hoping this comes out here!

controversial buffalo stance (haitch), Saturday, 28 January 2006 09:19 (twenty years ago)

i think it's only available through nintendo's website or the nintendo store in nyc.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Monday, 30 January 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

I bought it at Nintendo World. Like everyone who reviewed it, I really wish it had a save function; as a compromise I'm running a line out to a Boss RC-20 and looping different plankton over each other and saving the output, which is making this game ten times more beautiful and fascinating than it'd ordinarily be.

Not that this isn't totally essential itself. I can't think of a game that takes better advantage of the DS inputs. It reminds me of my first synthesizer; the possible applications of this game are enormous.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 30 January 2006 05:31 (twenty years ago)

It really is magical. Everytime I show it to someone they are squealing and giggling within 2 minutes. Then they won't give it back for an hour.

I ordered from the Nintendo website and it didn't come with headphones. But yeah, I recommend using some. They seem to add a lot.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 30 January 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Played this at a friend's house. Really cool.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
I'm thinking about getting this. Do you people love it still?

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 22 May 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

It's nice... but not really a game. More of a tech demo and a fun thing to show your friends.
So yes, I do love it; but be aware what of what you're getting.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 May 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

It's very addictive and a really sweet thing to do for 10 minutes at a time.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 22 May 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

agreed

I am putting this game on pause thirty seconds in to come to ILG and shout HOLY SHIT, THEY'VE MADE STEVE REICH: THE GAME

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 27 May 2006 00:00 (twenty years ago)

I called it "Phillip Glass-in-the-box", but same difference.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 27 May 2006 02:35 (twenty years ago)

are they starting to carry this in stores now?.
i saw at gamestop new for $35 a few weeks ago. i asked the guy that worked there what the deal was, and he said that they only recieved 1 copy. and today i saw it at FYE new for $35. but, again, they only had 1 copy.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 27 May 2006 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Is it Reich or Glass? That's a big difference!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 27 May 2006 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Depends which fish you're playing with.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 27 May 2006 04:29 (twenty years ago)

tracy, luminaria = glass
hanenbow, sun-animalcule = eno 'discreet music'
lumiloop = tony conrad
rec-rec = this heat '24 track loop'
volvoice = lucier 'I am sitting in a room'
nanocarp = reich 'clapping music'

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Saturday, 27 May 2006 08:24 (twenty years ago)

tracy, luminaria = glass

You're playing wrong. Tracy = Music for 18 Musicians.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 27 May 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

ha, I can roll with that one james.

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Saturday, 27 May 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

god, I was thinking about this thread the whole time I was coming back from seeing United 93. Specifically:

hanenbow, sun-animalcule = eno 'discreet music'

THIS IS DEAD-ON. I was listening to Discrete Music in the car and I could practically see the bubbles floating past the eggs.

nanocarp = reich 'clapping music'

I am suddenly paralyzed with the realization that I've never heard this, a situation I plan on fixing immediately.

Also it should be noted that the manual for this is *really* beautifully put together. It really is a well-made product, albeit one that's not for everyone.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 27 May 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
--I think the Steve Reich one with the direction arrows is my favorite

--Beatnes kinda sucks, there's a delay after you touch anything so it's way to hard to get anything on the beat

--I just realized today that you can change the beats and tempo on Rec Rec!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

HMMMM

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I am ordering this the minute I get paid on Friday.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

It's definitely a 10-minutes-at-a-time game.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Looks like it's been discontinued (at least according tot he Amazon page), so anyone who is curious should check it out sooner rather than later.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

ACK!!!! I haven't ordered it yet!!!

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

You'll be fine til Friday, I imagine. Amazon says Target is still shipping it, and at least one other supplier.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Whew! I got it on order at nintendo - the shipping was less than Amazon.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Got it last night, but didn't find the package until this morning! So, only got a few minutes of Audience Mode in. When I showed it to Mr. Jaq, his reaction was "huh..." Philistine.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 23 June 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

ha! mine is still en route. can't wait to try it out, though!

patita (patita), Friday, 23 June 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

So, when I met Mr. Jaq for lunch today:
Mr. J: So I was playing with that electric blanket...
me, head buried in menu: Electric blanket?
Mr. J: You know, Electraplankton or whatever it's called...

So much for that "huh" reaction.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 23 June 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

i just ordered this for my new ds lite... pretty psyched

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Friday, 23 June 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, this is stunning. Also, incredibly relaxing and brain-clearing - meditative almost.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 24 June 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

i've really wanted to play this for a few days but i left my ds someplace far away.

outputting audio to a computer and recording it seems like it should be straightforward, so i'm going to play around with that when i get it back.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 26 June 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

i just bought it at gamestop. i think they're starting to carry it in-store now?. anyway, it's a lot of fun.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, just run a male/male connector from the headphone jack on the ds to the mic in on the computer and use any program you'd record from.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

so awesome

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Thursday, 29 June 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

so far, my favorite is sun-animalcule. it's so fun and relaxing.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 29 June 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

kingfish, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 02:26 (sixteen years ago)

electroplankton was a good look into where casual gaming was going before they got micropayments right. Six dollars is really about right!
