i've never played an age of empires game before but looks like it would be addictive fun right up my alley.

thoughts?

the games are like digital crack. i'm currently immersed in AOE3.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to have to get this, aren't i? unless it turns out to be horribly flawed

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

so what's the deal, do you move through these on rails or it is more civ-style open-ended but still goal-oriented?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

either. the PC versions have a "campaign" thingee, which is a few dozen scenarios connected by characters("heroes") doing a storyline.

using, the game is just random skirmishes. pick a couple-three countries, a map, and go at it.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Is this a turn-based game?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

the PC ones are not, not sure about the DS one.

let's see

IGN says it's RTS.

guess not.

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

i heard they were converting it to turn-based...

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

IGN: Age of Empires is a heavy favorite in the RTS world: How have you handled the conversion from RTS to Turn-Based while still keeping the "Magic" alive?

Tyler Sigman: Age of Kings PC was successful in part because of the well-executed RTS mechanics, but more as a result of the overall game theme, setting, and concept. Although the core mechanics are quite different in the DS version, we have been faithful to most of the key gameplay features that make Age of Empires Age of Empires: great historical setting, diverse and meaningful unit types, a deep technology tree, a variety of buildings, and map exploration. And of course, shooting things with trebuchets is absolutely vital!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

damn that IGN. change your category listing, then

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm way more interested if it's turn based.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 06:06 (twenty years ago)

If the shittiness of DS Sims is anything to go on, I wouldnt put much hope in any port of a large sim/strategy style game on the DS. The limitations seem to be an issue (ridiculously small poly count, memory, etc).

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 06:38 (twenty years ago)

I think all the playtesting of the PSP sims must have been done on a machine where disc access times were not an issue.

Trayce, I think 2d games would be fine on the DS

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 06:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah if it can do advance wars why not this?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

holy shit i think this is OUT!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
To derail a little:

Does anyone know how to start a new campaign on the PC? I am loathe to uninstall and reinstall as I like my skirmish guys...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Can't you just go Single Player > Campaign, and then choose the first mission? It won't re-lock all the other missions for you, but you'll still be able to play through from the start exactly the way you did the first time round. I did this, when I got about 8 missions in on easy difficulty and realised they were just too easy to be fun, so I notched it up and started again.

Is anyone playing any AOE3 online? Anybody fancy a game sometime?

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I can't play AOE3 anymore, since my copy of XP deactivated itself.

kingfish da notorious teletabby (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

let's talk about AGE OF EMPIRES DS

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Do you have it?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:58 (twenty years ago)

No

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Well then.

I would talk about AOE3 on the AOE3 thread, but it's on ILE instead of ILG and things move too fast over there, nobody would spot it. Maybe I should go and rescue it by atarting a thread here and linking them up, but...ah sod it, I don't like the game that much.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

i was just kidding, you guys can talk about whatever version of AOE you like here!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Should I buy aoe3? I loved AOE2 without ever actually playing it except for maybe 25 blissful multiplayer games.

I need a DS, I think.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Easy is ridiculously easy. I kind of wanted a level 30 home city but I did that anyway with Seville on Skirmish. I have been doing the missions on and off. It's pleasantly mindnumbing!

I've finished the game, had lots of skirmishes etc and I'm still shit. JimD I'd play you online but the humiliation might just be too much. Anyway, I'm not altogether sure how to :)

Oh and for a stupid but fun cheat press return/enter and type "tuck tuck tuck" (without the quotation marks) and press enter again. I won't tell you what happens but it is fun for a while.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

I asked if other thread could be moved here. Why? Cos I'm crazy like that.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:09 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
i finally got this game!!

seems good so far but the graphics are not as simple as they should be, thus when a bunch of units are clustered together it's hard to tell them apart. also putting it on a totally diagonal grid makes using the d-pad really frustrating.

but otherwise it seems like hours of flowers.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

WHY DID IT FREEZE UP.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 13 July 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

ok it's better.

this game is a major time-suck, my god.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 13 July 2006 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

I got this game as a gift the other day, but havent opened it yet because Im debating getting Advance Wars instead. Is it worth keeping? Im a huge fan of all the civ games so I think it might be up my alley.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 13 July 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

both are supposed to be great. i pledge full allegiance to the advance wars games though--and advance wars DS is as awesome an entry as the other ones.

sounds like you'll probably be happy with either, but fyi age of empires has more civ-ish elements (buildings, technological advances) whereas advance wars is pretty much straight tactics & combat.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 13 July 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ill probably just go with AoE. I'd kinda feel like a dick returning a gift.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 13 July 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

whoa the campaigns in this game are EPIC.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

and HARD.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

meanwhile, they have a boardgame out for AOEIII, and they're now making little miniatures for it.

(i don't think we have an AOE3 ILG thread)
