Looks totally fake, but clever

There's enough detail in there that it might be true, but come on, who leaves a server on for four years and forgets about it?
― Wide Area Network King (snoball), Monday, 1 July 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link
yeah I don't believe any of that for one second. it even reads like fiction.
― Clay, Monday, 1 July 2013 18:29 (ten years ago) link
Its got a punchline and everything. Still a nice story tho.
― Random .mdb Memories (NotEnough), Monday, 1 July 2013 21:17 (ten years ago) link
They do use genetic algorithms, though. You can read more here:
http://www.kbs.twi.tudelft.nl/docs/MSc/2001/Waveren_Jean-Paul_van/thesis.pdf
in sections 3 and 9. There's more on neural networks for bots in Quake 3 here:
http://www.ieee-cig.org/cig-2009/Proceedings/proceedings/papers/cig2009_041e.pdf
Maybe someone can email one of the above authors and get an expert weigh in as to the plausibility of the story (fishy as it sounds!).
― bamcquern, Monday, 1 July 2013 22:42 (ten years ago) link
sounds like the bots just ran out of memory
― 乒乓, Monday, 1 July 2013 23:13 (ten years ago) link
I thought about that, too, although the op describes the large files as logs rather than the AI routines themselves, and I don't know how pared down (or not) the genetic algorithms are or must be. It's not worth really intensely educating myself about Quake 3's bots' GA because the reasons behind the bots' behavior in the op, if not made up, is certainly going to be a banal one.
― bamcquern, Monday, 1 July 2013 23:55 (ten years ago) link
If they used a genetic algorithm and the fitness function output was heavily weighted with number of deaths, this makes sense no?
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 01:27 (ten years ago) link
the algos that made it were the ones that had 0 deaths?
― BIG HOOS aka the denigrated boogeyman (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 05:16 (ten years ago) link
Maybe the algos were set to maximize game-related lols come 2013
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 05:26 (ten years ago) link
Algo: the Oscar-nominated story of how a group of American hostages were rescued by a forum poster peddling a bogus story of spontaneous AI self-awareness in a Quake environment. Three stars.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 05:58 (ten years ago) link
I wouldn't completely rule out the bot behavior being real even if the interpretation of the behavior is bogus. One of the articles I linked to talks about the great care and attention the GAs need to make good AI, so if a server ran unattended for even a few months, I wouldn't be surprised if the AI broke, or acted strangely or unpredictably. It's also possible that the story is basically true, but the time-frame has been greatly exaggerated, or the description of the bots' behavior embellished.

fascinated by SaltyBet's Dream Cast Casino http://saltybet.com/basically you bet virtual money on BO5 bouts of one on one fighting games 24/7, all AI controlled what makes it interesting is the fights are from MUGEN http://mugen.wikia.com/wiki/M.U.G.E.NMUGEN is a freeware fighting game where the characters & stages are programmed by amateurs, copyrights are openly ignored and there is no attempt at balancewatching it is a surreal roulette of pop culture battles, Munch's The Scream gets beaten up by Sailor Mercury outside Moe's Tavern etcand all soundtracked by a savvy mix of jazz, hiphop, film soundtacks, vg music etc etc

xpost Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. in the event you or someone else is unfamiliar it's a team-/class-based medieval FPS where the camera is attached to your head, such that when it's inevitably lopped off you get to roll around with it. also there is a button that just makes you scream an absurd war cry. good game, imo.
