This new $10 thing from the makers of Darwinia that will be available through Steam. I've only played the tutorial, didn't quite fulfill all my Matthew Broderick style global thermonuclear war ambitions but it was reasonably fun. Any thoughts?

Is it out yet? For no good reason, I preordered it on Steam. I didn't look when it was available.

I don't know if it is out officially. I got a torrent to try it out. Only did the tutorial and then I got busy. Now I'm going to bed. I'll report back tomorrow.

It's creepy as hell and lots of fun to play with friends. It's incredibly simple for an RTS, but I like that - partly 'cause I'm no good at strategy games, and partly because it gets you up and killing really quickly. Some friends of mine and I played a few games this weekend and had a blast getting into sudden sea battles or watching a clear victory suddenly evaporate when another guy's subs showed up off the coast and wiped out our major cities.

I give it equal points for fun and atmosphere, and at that price, for a replayable online game, it's worth checking out.

Comes out this Friday.

Cool. I agree it certainly has a cool creepy factor. I did think it seemed simple, which I'm glad of because I too suck at RTS. I haven't had a shot of it yet today, but I'm gonna try and hook up with a friend on vent and have a bash for shits and giggles.

husband is addicted.

I've bought and quite enjoyed it. I'm way crappy though and have had many problems with getting into servers, plus the tendency for people to select the slowest possible rate of time elapsing, which can grate.

played the demo. very atmospheric but not sure i can understand the addiction, or appeal.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm getting it now, so I can nuke it from orbit.

I wish there was a "Threads" view option so I can see ppl pissing their pants when the bomb drops.

i played it seemingly against no counterstrike, i obliterated the opposition with no fatalities of my own, and the game says at the end 'no clear victor'

?

i beg to differ, i pretty much removed the west coast of america from existence.

Yeah, the music (and the coughing!??!) is creepy as hell, and lemme tell you, losing to the computer 86 to -24 is NO FUN AT ALL.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the music (and the coughing!??!) is creepy as hell,

we thought this was sobbing. It was turned off.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously pissed off. Ten minutes into a game, Defcon 1, nukes filling the screen and then "This server has been shut down" jumps on the screen :( I'm also still unsure as to how to perform well in naval battles, seem to get routed a little too easily.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Monday, 2 October 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

I actually did really well in naval battles the last game I played (against AI). Of course, it was North America (me!) versus South America, so there wasn't much distance to travel - I had my entire fleet off the West Coast sailing towards Chile, and when the SA ships came around and engaged my super fleet, I sent in the carrier'd bombers as backup and smacked them all up.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 October 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

we thought this was sobbing. It was turned off.

I am reasonably sure it is both.

Will M. (Will M.), Monday, 2 October 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

I did the old NATO vs. Soviet Union thing with me as Europe, CPU1 as USA and CPU2 as the Soviets.

Result: Soviet Union completely blown up. Western United States wiped out by ICBMs. Only loss for Europe was 600,000 dead in Germany. Not too shabby!

I still totally suck at this but the magic part is you always get to decimate at least one metropolis no matter how bad you are. Best tactic I've found is to go Russia and then become friendly with Asia and Europe. You're virtually untouchable.

TAKE THIS, BUDAPEST
