WHo loves the Sega Master System?

I LOVES IT.
It's all fancy but still very 8-bit.

I need more and more games.
First goals: Every 'card' game and every Sonic game.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Friday, 27 October 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

I had one when it first came out, before I had a NES.
The only Sega Card game I had was Transbot. Wonder Boy, Rambo First Blood Part 2 and The Ninja were the games I played the most. I think that's all I owned besides Hang On & Safari Hunt, and I couldn't play Safari Hunt anymore after my dog chewed the light gun cord. The gun was so cool looking that I kept it as a toy for quite a while after that. I might have owned Space Harrier as well, not sure.

Some other games I remember playing and liking:

Alex Kidd In Miracle World
Shinobi
Fantasy Zone
Black Belt
Zillion
Quartet
Penguin Land
Wonderboy In Monster Land

I somehow never played Phantasy Star until about 8 years ago on an emulator, but that would be one to get.

The games that stick out in my memory as shitty are Alf and Ghostbusters.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 27 October 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)

Know what? I love what the Japanese call 'Kusosofto' or 'Shit-software.'
It describes games that are so bad they're hilarious
I might get Ghostbusters at some point...
I mean, I INTENTIONALLY play 'Great Baseball,' or as I call it 'Terrible Baseball.' I imported the Japanese Sega My Card.

I NEED Transbot. Confusing, silly as hell, HARD without the Rapid Fire, all the colors are the colors of a caraccident injury... mmmm.

But of course I need GOOD games like Phantasy Star and Shinobi, too.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Friday, 27 October 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

Ghostbusters is actually kinda fun until you get to the part with all the stairs. The only cool thing I remember about Alf was this trick item thing that I totally fell for:

The Five and Dime sells an Alf Book for
$100 and a Lantern for $100. Sell your Pearl for $100, then buy the Lantern.

If you buy the Alf Book, you see a short story...this is really cool, so I think
I should tell you about it! When you exit the store, text boxes pop up against
a brick background. They say, "ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS AN ALIEN LIFE FORM.
HIS HOME PLANET EXPLODED LEAVING HIM STRANDED IN SPACE WITH HIS FRIEND SKIP AND
HIS GIRLFRIEND RHONDA.

"RHONDA AND SKIP WENT TO MARS. ALF CRASH LANDED ON EARTH WHERE HE BECAME
FRIENDS WITH A WONDERFUL FAMILY. LIFE WAS GREAT...EVEN THOUGH THEY WOULD NOT
LET HIM EAT ANY CATS.

"THEN ONE DAY ALF DECIDED TO FIX HIS SPACESHIP SO HE COULD VISIT HIS FRIENDS ON
MARS. BEING VERY SMART ALF DECIDED TO SELL THE STORY OF HIS ADVENTURE TO SEGA
SO THEY COULD MAKE IT A GAME.

"THEY DID AND DECIDED THAT IF ANYBODY EVER READ THIS BOOK THEY WOULD HAVE TO GO
BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME. SURPRISE...HA"

This was really the turning point for me in the game...those developers sure had
a good sense of humor. So, the moral of the story is not to buy dumb items out
of curiosity.

Pissed me the fuck off as a kid, but kind of funny in retrospect. Other than that, it's not much cop.
Both are really short games and probably pretty rare at this point.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 27 October 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned here yet but Target is apparently selling a $50 Coleco handheld with these Master System/Game Gear games loaded onto it:

Sonic Drift 2
Sonic Triple Trouble
Alex Kidd in High Tech World
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Altered Beast
Assault City
Astro Warrior
Aztec Adventure
Bomber Raid
Columns
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
Fantasy Zone
Fantasy Zone: The Maze
Global Defense
Kung Fu Kid
The Ninja
Penguin Land
Quartet
Snail Maze
Super Columns

Here's a thread about it:

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 27 October 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

I KNOW, someone needs to put a cart slot on it!
Anda tutorial with ALOT of detail! I want a SEGA CARD slot, a GG slot, and an SMS slot, there will probably be one adapter needed, and the Sega Card slot might be pipe dream...

The GZeus (The GZeus), Friday, 27 October 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Nah I was always a NES man.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Friday, 27 October 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was a NES man too. I remember friends having Master Systems, and I quite liked Alex Kidd (in Mircale World? the build-in one in the MSII), but whenever I was round at a friends playing the MS, I'd always wish we were all just round mine playing the NES.

It did have a cool lightgun tho.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

i never had an 8-bit console.

teh_kit (g-kit), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

me neither, did anyone ever own the robot thing for the NES? what was the point of it?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

I never had a 16-Bit console. :(

I think the robot just put your game in for you? Or maybe it just handed you your games, for when your friends couldn't make it round.. I don't think many people ever owned them.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

i bet plenty of people pwned them, though.

teh_kit (g-kit), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Nah R.O.B (Robotic Operating Buddy) used to move spinning giros so that they'd press buttons on the joypad you inserted into its tray. Was compatible with TWO FUCKING GAMES. EVER. Fuck you Nintendo.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

i only ever saw Alex Kidd on the Master system, but it was marvellous

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

In the Words of Mean Yob. Alex Kidd looks like a shambling baboon.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost)
What kind of buddy wont even pass you a game? Fuck that. Glad I never had money as a kid or I might have been duped into buying one.

Back to Master System, which Sonic(s) were available on that? (Sonic being the only Sega game I really like)

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Alex Kidd (in Mircale World? the build-in one in the MSII)

Yeah, that was Miracle World. My babysitter's little brother had the MSII. That thing looked like a fucking answering machine and couldn't even play Sega Cards, but I was still a little envious of built-in Alex Kidd since I never owned the cart.

Back to Master System, which Sonic(s) were available on that?

Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic Blast and Sonic Chaos, but AFAIK the MS/GG 8-bit Sonics were quickie downgraded afterthought cash-ins and you're better off sticking with the Genesis originals (yes, the 8-bit ones came out AFTER THE 16-BIT ONES).
They were recently reissued on Sonic Gems Collection (at least the GG versions) and I haven't read any reviews that had anything nice to say about them. I have no idea if they even have unique level designs that might make them worth playing, or what.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, there are some unique level designs, and there's more to it than I thought. Wiki sez:

Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series developed by Ancient and published by Sega for its Master System and Game Gear systems. Originally released in December of 1991, both to the Japanese and the American/European markets, Sonic the Hedgehog, was not merely a port of the original Genesis game, but a reworked version, incorporating the same game play as well as both old and new levels. The game was re-released as part of Sonic Mega Collection Plus and was included as a hidden minigame in Sonic Adventure DX. This was the final game released for the Master System in the US.

Which means those other three Sonic games didn't come out here on SMS, just Game Gear, but check this out:

Brazil was one of the SMS' most successful markets. It was marketed in that country by Tec Toy, Sega's Brazilian distributor. A Sega Master System III (and even a semi-portable SMS VI) had been released in that market and several games had been translated into Portuguese. The characters in the said games had been modified so that they appealed to Brazilian mainstream audiences (for example, Wonder Boy in Monster Land featured Mônica, the main character from a popular children's comic book in Brazil, created by Maurício de Sousa). Brazil also produced 100% national titles, like Sítio do Pica Pau Amarelo (based on Monteiro Lobato workmanship) and Castelo Ra-Tim-Bum (from TV Cultura series). Brazil was also where the first several Sonic the Hedgehog Game Gear titles started out. Tails, one of the characters, made his worldwide debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Master System. That title would later be ported to the Game Gear in other markets.

The most notable Master System step in Brazil was the compact 100% wireless system developed by Tec Toy. The console transmit the A/V signal in radio frequency, dispensing cable connections. It was produced from 1994 to 1997 and is still a target for console collectors.

Later in its life in Brazil, Game Gear games had been ported to the Master System and several original Brazilian titles were made for the system. Tec Toy also produced a licensed version of the wildly popular fighting game Street Fighter II for the Master System. Despite the limitations of the console, the game turned out to be fairly well received. The console production was familiar to the Brazilians, which explains the success in that market.

The Sega Master System is still being produced in Brazil. The latest version is the "Master System III Collection". It uses the same design as the North American Master System II (Master System III in Brazil), but is white and comes in three versions: one with 74 games built-in, other with 105 games built-in and another with 112 games built-in on an internal ROM. However, in Brazil it is hard to find the 3D Glasses, the Light Phaser and even cartridges, leaving most Brazilians with only built-in games.

I want that 112 game version! Is Brazil PAL or NTSC?
And yeah, they got a SMS Sonic 2 before our Genesis version, never knew about that.

One more thing:
A marketing agreement between Sega and the producers of the anime Zillion resulted in both a game based on the series and the design of the Light Phaser attachment: the protagonists of the show use a pistol which is nearly identical to the SMS Light Phaser, including the cable.

That's why it looked so cool. It was a fucking ANIME GUN REPLICA.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

The Sega Master System is still being produced in Brazil.

!!!!!!!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 October 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

Here it is, baby. The SMSIII:
http://i.s8.com.br/images/games/cover/img4/1435934.jpg
Dig the 6-button controllers - for SFII, of course.

As for compatibility:

PAL-M is also 486 separate horizontal lines of raster arrayed vertically (525 including the vertical interval), with 60 fields per second (30 interlaced frames per second), but the color burst signal (inversion by 1H) is handled differently than NTSC . PAL-M is not compatible with PAL, but the black & white part of the signal is compatible with NTSC. Only Brazil & Laos use PAL-M so their consumer recorders often have the color circuitry to play back PAL-M & NTSC.

Hmmmm...this is worth looking into, even if the games are in Portuguese.

Anyway, I think the real question is Who Loves The Atari 7800? That's the true unloved 8-bitter. I've never even SEEN one IRL.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 27 October 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

Truth is that Alex Kidd in Miracle World was shiiite.

Sonic 1 on the SMS kicked serious arse and I have better memories of that version than the Mega Drive/Genesis version because I played it more. WATERFALL ZONE ACT 3 GET READY TO CLIMB THAT BITCH ^__^

The Real Esteban Buttez (EstieButtez1), Saturday, 28 October 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

Also: The Asterix game on the SMS was the best Asterix game I played on any format, aight?

The Real Esteban Buttez (EstieButtez1), Saturday, 28 October 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

However, all the GAMES for the Brazil and Euro systems work on USA systems and vice-versa.

I love the 8-bit sonic games. They play more like half Sonic half Mario. They got more and more Sonic-like as time wnet on, except for 'Sonic Blast' which plays...weird. Kinda still animation. You don't lose all your rings when hit.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Saturday, 28 October 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

I'll have to take your word on that, then. All I know is that all the Sonic Mega/Gems Collection reviews I read were all "ew, 8-bit Sonic". I only knew ONE KID with a Game Gear w/ Sonic 1 and me being 11 yr old graphics whore and having played the Genesis version just went "ew, 8-bit Sonic" when I tried it. NOBODY had SMS Sonic in my neighborhood, but it's apparently the same as GG. I'll check 'em out if I ever get those Collection discs.

Alex Kidd in MW seemed cool to 7 year old me who had never owned any other system besides an Atari 2600, never played Super Mario Bros. etc., but I'd be afraid to try it now. That was where I first learned to play Rock Paper Scissors though, believe it or not.
There was something about the game that never made me beg my parents to actually buy it for me, evidently.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 28 October 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, there's a 7800 game called NINJA GOLF. I want.
I wonder how rare this stuff is. There's only like 60 games:

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

OMFG
http://www.i-mockery.com/minimocks/ninjagolf/1.jpg

Looks like some grade-a "Kusosofto".

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

Bah! It took a good 10 minutes for that link protection to kick in, haha. Just go here:
http://www.i-mockery.com/minimocks/ninjagolf/

All right, I've wasted enough space on the stupid 7800. Atari Age says it's still fairly easy to find a lot of the games new.

Back to SMS talk...

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

In the Words of Mean Yob. Alex Kidd looks like a shambling baboon.

lololol, he's a spitting image of teh_kit actually!

I heart the master system, at least enough to pull apart one of my MS2 consoles and fit a 50/60hz switch in it to hear the Choplifter music at the right speed. I defy you to find a better game than that on the system, though.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 30 October 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

Ooooh! Melton said you looked like a baboon kitty. Berties!

Hahaha. He really does.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Monday, 30 October 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Thunder Blade just might be better than Choplifter.

NOTHING is worse that F-16 Fighting Falcon. I don't even know what to DO.
Why is the ground constantly shrinking from mountans to molehills? Why are there no enemies?

Hmmm...
A 50-60 switch would be nice for SOUND compatability, but in the land of the 50 stars and the land of the rising sun there be no PAL.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 30 October 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

haha omg alex kit

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 30 October 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Can you stop putting capital words in random places please GZeus?

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Monday, 30 October 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

A 50-60 switch would be nice for SOUND compatability, but in the land of the 50 stars and the land of the rising sun there be no PAL.

Ah, it's not an issue for you guys though, because you've always had games full speed! We got them 17.5% slower when they were converted for PAL, sort of like a VAT for games. If you ever played 50hz Sonic on the Megadrive, you'd feel for us poor sods who had it running at a snail's pace and STILL thought Sonic was fast.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 30 October 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

Is this why Americans are so much better at video games? Kind of like how people from high altitude climates pwn at running?

roc u like a § (ex machina), Monday, 30 October 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Darra
See, they're NOT random.

Do you speak like a robot? It took a long time for me to get over speaking like Commander Data. Being autistic leaves a tendency to speak in monotone(and often loudly).
At this point it's more difficult to communicate without inflection.
Again, I find italics 'mendoukusai' or "pain in the ass that's not worth the trouble."

So.......deal with it.

Melton etc.;
Thing is, many many games were designed for the UK, Germany, and France. I assume they were designed for 50hz. I guess I'll just live with faster games...
The Brazillian games always ran at 60hz, but the systems are weird because of their video standards.

And Roc....yes. But only when it comes to pre-32bit games.
Old-school twitch games it's certainly true.
The 3D games and so one were generally more faithfully ported.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 30 October 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

Oh this is great! You'll have no option but to address each of my queries:

Why do birds suddenly appear?
What was the last boss on Rygar on the NES?
Every time you are near?
How many bolts are there in the Eifell Tower?
What is the definition of a whisper?
Where did I leave my keys?

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

That's stupid.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

My NOS Rapid Fire units arrived yesterday.
Very nice condition, a little wear around the back and edges. That just proves they've been in the packasge for 10+ years.
$15 shipped.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Dismantled and cleaned the internals of all my controllers. God that helps.
No more creaks or unresponsiveness.

And big surprise, there are weird cost-cutting measures in the chinese made ones VS the taiwanese models. Things like slightly shorter cable and notably smaller contact pads on the action buttons.
So if you have the choice, pick a Taiwan/Japan model VS Chinese.

And the definition of a whispter is speaking with the hissing sound of your semi-closed throat as opposed to your vibrating vocal chords as the sound source for shaping by your mouth.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Friday, 3 November 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

I once managed to get the contents of a can of Dr Pepper all over one of my six button Megadrive controllers, thus rendering multiplayer SF2 impossible, but taking the thing apart and sitting the case and buttons in a sink of warm water for an hour or so made it good as new. I often wonder if PS2 controllers are as easy, as there's one sitting sticky and crippled in the drawer.

I wondered why the difference in cable length on the MS controllers. I assumed it was the difference between the ones that came with the mark 1 and 2 consoles.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 3 November 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

That could be it. I imagine they went to China to save money, which is the reason the Mark II was designed.
