first one of these polls thts been too tricky for me

rez, sunshine, prime, wind waker, there must be so many others too

cozwn, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

MORROWIND

nabisco inferno (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

I totally missed out on this generation of videogames. I didn't have an Xbox, PS2 or Gamecube, a GBA, or a good enough computer to run modern games, so I played a whole bunch of SNES.

(Z S) (Z S), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

animal crossing, vice city, WHAT DO I CHOOSE

cozwn, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

CHOCOBO FTW.

Nah, seriously, I voted Morrowind. I think the only game I actually bought that year.

Mordy, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't Bejeweled come out in 2002?

Mordy, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

(A quick look at wiki indicates that I am wrong - it came out in 2001.)

Mordy, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

i think that was one of the GBA Castlevania games that i played and loved. they all run together though.

^^ this, except for the playing snes part

tho i did play splinter cell on my pc -- one of the last things i did on it, and i thought it was pretty great.

goole, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

i also had a lot of fun with mech assault even though it's kinda lame

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

i was huge into baldur's gate 2, hated NWN

goole, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I did play Aria of Sorrow last night on GBA, which is pretty similar to Harmony of Dissonance, right? I'll go with that. The handheld 2D Castlevania games this decade have been addictive as hell.

(Z S) (Z S), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, they are basically awesome SNES games

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't played the new DS one. apparently it's linear, and while the Super Metroid routine of getting new abilities and backtracking to find previously inaccessible areas does get a little routine, fighting through linear levels seems a little boring in comparison.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

I do wish that when you gained a new ability that opened up a new area (like double jumping), it would just highlight on the map the areas that just became accessible. I assume that on the DS versions you can just draw on the map Zelda style, but on GBA you are faced with the decision to either a)make a little note to yourself on a piece of paper where the inaccessible areas are and why, b)not have an awful memory or c)wander around the boundaries of the map like an idiot. I tend to go with C.

(Z S) (Z S), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

went with Wind Waker, with Vice City being a close runner up.

Harmony is the worst of the modern handheld castlevanias. xpost: you can drag markers around on the map screen. not the best solution but it helps.

abanana, Monday, 22 December 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

You can drag markers on the GBA Castlevanias? I suppose it doesn't matter anyway. All of my GBA games are bootleg China copies, and half of them (including Aria of Sorrow, unfortunately) play perfectly, let you save the game, and then when you start it up the next day - your saved game is gone, every time.

(Z S) (Z S), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

C is part of the fun!

(but can be super annoying when you're sure you've been over every inch of the map, yeah)

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

voted for kingdom hearts, but didn't ever get around to playing it until 2-3 years ago. if this had been san andreas instead of vice city, that would have won in a walk, but VC just looks so fugly to me at this point that i can't vote for it.

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

i seriously want to register a whole bunch of fake accounts to give suikoden more than just my vote

delicate mouse tune, crash of cat chords (Lamp), Monday, 22 December 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

GTA:VC was the only one i played...

Is Kingdom Hearts that free Microsoft card game?

metroid prime is one of the all time greats

cankles, Monday, 22 December 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

I thought something was weird about Wind Waker and Prime coming out the same year - oddly enough, the North American and Japanese releases were switched. We got Prime in November '02, while they got it the following February - for Zelda, it came out in Japan during December '02, and the US got in March '03. So technically they both came out in '02! But that was around the point I broke down and got a Cube, between those two and Sunshine it was enough to justify it.

Harmony of Dissonance was pretty mediocre - it paled in comparison to both GBA games that preceded and followed it. It was definitely playable, but it felt lazy and rushed compared to the other two.

I think I'll have to go with Wind Waker, too, though Metroid is very very close - another day I would choose that one. Vice City was damn good too, as was Animal Crossing, Rez and Warcraft III.

Nhex, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

So far I've only played three games on this list :(

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

You can drag markers on the GBA Castlevanias?

gah, i misread

abanana, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

Morrowind was out in 02? I thought it came out just before then. At any rate, the intro segment to Morrowind struck me at being some next-level shit, with the music, dialogue, and immersiveness of a first-person rpg that was more than i felt with deus ex or ss2 or something.

This was a year before I upgraded my system to a proper gaming rig, so I had a ps2 and a gamecube before that.

I think Rez and Zelda:WW were the only ones out of all these that I beat.

Cos Morrowind is my favourite game of all time this is easy.

I voted Warcraft 3 over Neverwinter Nights. It's funny, I played the shit out of Oblivion this year, but I had Morrowind and never got into it, too many problems getting started. I only had it on PC which I don't really like playing on (bleh on mouse).

Jet Set Radio needs a re-release as DLC.
Torn between Metroid Prime and Animal Crossing; the latter more for watching my girl play.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

metroid prime. best game for the gamecube, and yeah, one of the greatest games ever

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

is pokemon ruby/sapphire the most innovative pokemon iteration? i don't think i played the games before that (was that gold/silver?), but going from red/blue to this seemed like a huge leap

O_O nwn over elder scrolls

Lamp, Friday, 2 January 2009 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

So GTA wins out over four fruity RPGs.

I should've remembered Super Mario Sunshine, which was kinda cool but missing classic enemies. It also introduced me to the 'durian' fruit, however I didn't play it until 2008.
