recommend me a game for XBOX 360

My housemate has bought a 360 and we're all having fun playing GTAIV, with me personally failing to complete any missions and preferring to go round duffing people up in the hospital and making speedboats drop on their heads using the cheats and stuff.

I'm very much out of the loop as I've never really had proper access to a console since my SNES died int he 90s, therefore I'm still getting used to the 3D-ness of things at the moment. GTA I can just about handle, but all these FPS do my head in. I end up running the wrong way or forgetting what the strafe button does or just getting bored by the undulating "walk, shoot a alien, walk, get to a door that doesn't open" etc.

Looking through a lot of the games on the shelves in a games exchange, it seemed that the majority of Xbox games look really serious and are much in the style of things like Halo3 (which we also have and bores me to tears).

I'm assuming the Xbox360 is aimed at the mature gamer with a taste for action, lots of complicated button combos and impressive gore/explosions but is this all it does?

So I'm loooking for something that a crap games player can get in to. What I like:

- Stuff that has a story, is atmospheric (I like the idea of Silent Hill although I've never played it), something you can get engrossed in
- Do platformers exist any more?
- Do one-on-one beat-em-ups exist any more?
- Stuff that is imaginative/cartoonish but maybe not kiddish/cutesy. Is there a sort of Studio Ghibli game equivalent anywhere?

Stuff I don't like:

- First-person games where I have a gun and I have to shoot funny-looking men that I can't see in a futuristic mine about some ultra-complicated legal dispute.
- WW2 simulations, or any simulation that aims for ultra-realism. If I wanted to do that shit I'd join the TAs or something.

dead rising is fun, and it has humour and charm in buckets, but it is dogged by a pretty hardcore design choice (essentially you need to play it through 2/3/4 times to level up your character before you can make any real progress). tht might put tng off right out the gate; I wd definitely play it at some pt but be aware tht it is pretty hard and a bit of an acquired taste (given tht it requires some degree of forgiveness and understanding of its central design)

cozwn, Monday, 5 January 2009 01:53 (nine years ago) Permalink

psychonauts another great choice but beware it doesn't run over VGA (I have a near-unplayed copy sitting next to my 360 :/); not sure if it works over HDMI but I think it does?

I'd recommend braid:
- it has a story/anti-story
- is atmospheric
- is a platformer/puzzle game
- pretty hard but rewarding when you crack the puzzles
- imaginative
- very engrossing
- has a great art style & soundtrack
- there's a thread on ILG you can share ur experience on : D

ignore anything else you might hear about it, outside this thread, till you've played/finished it

incidentally Ghibli are making an RPG for the DS with Level-5 (Layton, DQVIII)

BioShock is a FPS but it's not like anything else (and I HATE crap like Halo 3, Gears of War &c.). Can't think of a good 2D platformer apart from those already mentioned, but Microsoft consoles are only ever good for FPSes and driving games anyway. Get a PSP.

srsly though grozart's taste seems to align with Sony consoles, and the PS3 is far far too expensive to be considered viable.

actually it looks like the op's tastes matches up best to the wii but he has a 360 so the point is moot. and PSPs suck and so do driving games

ayo zappi best xbox RPG has to be mass effect. the only jrpgs i would bother with are lost odyssey and eternal sonata. maybe tales of vesperia

I should reiterate that while Saints Row 2 is a lot of fun, it's pretty broken and often looks like complete trash.

Best Xbox RPGs are Mass Effect, Oblivion + Fallout 3 (!!!), oh, and Fable 2. Eternal Sonata is the only JRPG I've dug.

Oblivion might be a taste thing. Buy it second-hand.

Braid looks interesting - good to see there''s still such a thing as a 2-d platformer on a highspec console.

any news about a silent hill game for 360?

Braid is beautiful, but I had to go to youtube to solve many puzzles - but oddly this didn't harsh my mellow at all...

Psychonauts works fine as a download from XBOX LIVE i think...

ZUMA slays as a puzzle...

i tried playing Mass Effect but just didn't "get" it. i guess i prefer JRPGs.
Braid is an amazing game, but pretty short and (for me anyway) has zero replay value.
Psychonauts is one of the best 3D platformers ever made, get it!

zappi, Monday, 5 January 2009 11:56 (nine years ago) Permalink

grozart - there are some more downloadable platforming games (with demos), for instance Bionic Commando Rearmed, MegaMan 9 and N+

There already is a Silent Hill game for the 360, called Homecoming I think. Supposed to be okay. Condemned 1 & 2 is also probably similiar in feel.

A few more non-shooting things games that come to mind are Civilization Revolution, Viva Pinata & Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts (haven't played these myself). People seem to like the downloadable board games too, like Catan.

Finally Geometry Wars 2, Ikaruga and Rez HD are games everybody should play.

choomette (sunny successor), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:44 (nine years ago) Permalink

Seem to remember Silent Hill: Homecoming getting pretty dire reviews. I dug condemed, but the story isn't all that compelling really.

Bioshock really would be a good way to go as far as getting story/environment heavy.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 5 January 2009 18:06 (nine years ago) Permalink

i dont know, metacritic scores tend to be fairly top-heavy (like game review scores in general), to me a 72 on metacritic is not a good sign at all.

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Monday, 5 January 2009 18:34 (nine years ago) Permalink

72 is average on metacritic. like it's the median i think. that or 71 or 70.

Psychonauts is one of the best 3D platformers ever made, get it!

The irony here being that the platforming in it is not very well done, but the rest of the game (story, characters, environments) are so great it pushes it all overwhelmingly into the realm of good.

i decided not to bother buying a new console because it's a bunch of money that will be better towards something like going home to scotland on vacation or whatever so i've dusted down my old xbox 360 and have started buying games i see in second-hand stores.

so far my haul is a grand total of 2 games which i enjoy but will not keep me going for very long:

tiger woods pga tour '12: road to the masters
mirrors edge

so, my question is: please suggest good single-player games for this hell console (there are some good suggestions in the thread already).

Seconding...gonna rescue mine from the closet for a couple days next week while the family’s away. I only have gta v which will tide me over but could use at least one other.

How to buy though? Can you download direct from the Xbox store? Any other avenues now that half.com is dead? I guess a local GameStop...

calstars, Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:38 (nine months ago) Permalink

I think a massive proportion of my Xbox 360 time was spent on the Skate series and Fallout (3 and New Vegas). A perhaps controversial suggestion would be 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, which was far more fun than it had any right to be. There are loads of 'big name' games from then that I expect would be cheap - Assassin's Creed series, Batman Arkham Asylum, Borderlands/2, Gears of War series. I expect stuff like GTA and Red Dead Redemption are holding their value in Gamestop and the likes, but try eBay. You'll often find "job lots" on eBay with a good cross-section of the big-name games.

Was playing with mine for the first time in years the other week while we were staying at a friend's flat without wi-fi. Found Just Cause 2 to be a godsend, you can just jump in, fuck shit up and get out with no muss or fuss.

Also the pre: Paradise Burnouts are lots of fun too.

I've been very tempted to restart Fallout 3/New Vegas again, but I have a kid now, so there's just no way.

i think, and i might be wrong, that you have to have a paid xbox live subscription to download games. i have just been looking in thrift stores and the like where there are usually 360 games, but the pickings are usually slim.

GTA V has really held its value because of GTA online i guess.

I definitely will look out for Dark Souls, the later Skate games (I only played the first one), Borderlands, Dark Souls, Just Cause 2. These are all great suggestions. I have played and/or completed everything else suggested. thanks!

It's an action rpg with the emphasis on action, I would say. The mechanics make it way more fun and interesting to me than trad rpgs. Main RPG elements have to do with modifying your character and weapon stats as you go. The big improvement over RPGs is not having to listen to anyone talk ever, if you don't want to.

Dark Souls and DS3 have become my favorite games ever though, and I still play DS3 every week ('invading' other players' worlds, which is sort of the meta-game), so I'm biased. Always happy to talk about them though (although not irl, because that would be embarrassing).

paradise isn't all that great but it's pretty good for what I'm looking for, i.e. I'm only rarely able to sit down for a proper session of a video game whereas paradise is super arcadey and has the open world element so it's fun just to pick up drive around a bit, do a race or two, then turn the console off.
